Centuries ago, the heavens echoed a roar that shook the Earth. Celestials, creatures of unimaginable power and beauty, stood at a crossroads above them. If someone were to look from afar, they would see a split between these impressive entities– an obvious sign of a disagreement that was about to spiral into a full on battle as they debated the fate of humanity.
Those celestial beings that would soon be separated to be known as Angels, saw beauty in the hearts of mankind. They were enamored by the complex emotions that the human race possessed– love, compassion, hope. They longed to create a race of their own that could share in these feelings. An ultimate race that didn’t just understand these feelings as distant observers but as participants. They were led by the Light Angel, Michael, who petitioned to mingle with humans and bless them with their divine essence, while the humans blessed them with the beauty of their deep emotions.
Not all Celestials shared in this desire. Across from the Angels, shrouded in the deep shadows cast by their own disdain, stood those who would become Demons. They saw in humanity a very dangerous flaw– their emotions might have been beautiful, but they were volatile and unpredictable. To them, granting such power to creatures so bound by their hearts was a quick path to absolute destruction. Their leader, Kako, warned of the chaos that would ensue if they were to mix their blood with the human race.
The result of this argument was a deadly battle that created the most powerful storms to ever shake the Earth. Those who remained, split into their opposing groups. The Celestials who wished to descend and share their blessings with mankind, became “Angels” and those who opposed became “Demons”, as they cast off their former grace and embraced the darker aspects of their nature.
As the Angels descended to Earth, they sought out only the most virtuous among humanity to bear their children. These offspring were powerful, blessed with the abilities of their angelic parents and the emotions of their human one. They were protectors, healers, and warriors– gifts to mankind.
However, the Demons were not idle. In their fight to defeat the Angels, they created a new magic.
The basic ingredients for this sorcery were chaos, fear, and pure hatred. Over hundreds of years, the use of it blackened their souls- causing physical deformities to manifest outside of their beautiful exterior. This resulted in their appearance becoming a frightening sight, and the demons evolved into the face of sheer horror. It was branded as the most monstrous form of magic to ever exist. This newfound allure was named “The Devil's Magic”, and humans soon added their own label to it–
Witchcraft.
The Demons, too, ended up taking human mates, but not out of love and compassion for their species. Their unions were driven by a desire to prove their point, to show the chaos that would become of mixing Celestial power with human frailty. By no mistake, their children were born of some of the worst of mankind, causing their abilities to be seen as dark and terrifying– curses rather than blessings. To emphasize their argument, they even taught these humans the art of witchcraft.
All of these mixed blooded humans came to be known by the rest of the world as “Mongrels”. For a time, the world marveled at them, unsure of whether to revere or fear these beings of dual nature. As time passed, fear won out. The powers possessed by Mongrels were unpredictable and they became outcasts, forced to live on the fringes of their world, and marked with brands on their cheeks that declared their lineage for all to see. These brands also served a purpose– they were magical brands, created by a capability that descended from the Angels. Their sole purpose was to have the ability to punish those who were caught using their power without the King’s permission.
The King enforced many laws, which were known as “The Bloodline Charter”. In the beginning, it outlines the law enforcing the brands from the age of seven, the age that a mixed child’s powers begin to develop. It added that Mongrels were no longer allowed to buy or sell outside of the Veil District, the District specifically designed for their outcast. If they wanted food, they had to produce it themselves, with their limited resources; if they wanted clothes, they had to make them.
They were allowed within other Districts however, there were guards posted in each District for constant supervision of Mongrels. This small freedom came with a cost. Mongrels were allowed to work for pure bloods in the other districts, providing small payment, and the King’s guards consistently punished these partially Celestial beings for the smallest mistakes, ensuring they stayed in line.
One of the major laws put in place was that the king decided on all marriages between the mixed bloodlines. The King's control over all Mongrel marriages was a means of maintaining his dominance. He found out early that the contrasting power deriving from someone of Angelic descent having a child with someone of Demonic descent, proved too much for a half-human’s body to bear. Their children never survived past the age of seven, always dying by the time their powers awakened within them. By orchestrating such marriages, the King was able to ensure that the population of these half-blooded Celestials remained stunted, preventing them from becoming too significant of a threat to his power. He purposely arranged marriages between the opposing lineages so that they could never have children. On a rarer occasion, he allowed the same bloodlines to mix, only to keep some sort of Mongrel population. To this day, many have guessed, but none truly know why.
What was even more of a mystery, is that this pure blooded King survived far beyond the average age of a human lifespan. In fact, he lived far past the span of most of the Mongrel’s lifetimes. He was centuries old– and nobody knew how. Due to his longevity, humans started to speculate that he came from the divine. Eventually, he played into the human’s need for a belief system, and he became a god to them. The secrets that he kept regarding this mystery, were swept under the rug by the world as some religious revelation. He used it to his advantage, manipulating them all into believing that no matter what he did, he was always right in doing so– because he was god.
The story of this Celestial divide and the creation of Mongrels, became legend. It is a tale told in hushed voices around dying fires, a reminder of the history of the heavens and the endless suffering that Mongrels endured.
In the shadows, a legacy was born of this legend. The only mongrel in history to survive with both angelic and demonic blood. Her existence was a defiance of the natural order and a sign of greatness. Whether this greatness would elicit hope or chaos, none could say, so her mixed heritage remained a secret.
However, it was not a secret to all– there was a prophecy given to a few select Celestials: a prophecy that was dangerous if heard by the wrong ears. The legend was foretold by the Angel Prophetis, regarding a child that would be born of mixed Celestial blood and another who would help to guide her.
The prophecy reads:
“A silver child shall be born– her blood both divine and damned. Her eyes shall glow with the shadow of a blood moon and the brightness of ethereal light.
This young life shall carry the fate of two worlds within her veins. Her beginnings will be entwined with that of a tyrant, who will darken and scorch their corner of the Earth.
The tyrant shall fall by her hand, but not before the child walks the narrow path between light and darkness. A great shadow, ancient and relentless, shall seek to claim her soul, and the essence of the Original will burn bright within her. It’s soul is to be entwined with hers for her whole eternity. This will grant her the strength to endure, when all others fail.
Through this child, the great rift will be bridged– a new era of unity, born of bloodshed, will rise.
But beware– for prophecy is a double-edged sword.
The knowledge of her existence will cause a greater separation. That separation will rift through both worlds- leading to a chaos never before seen; for the true nature of her destiny remains a mystery. She walks a thin line between right and wrong , which will cause confusion to dwell in the deepness of her soul.
Do not feel helpless, for golden strands and blue orbs will be her equal. This will become the peace in her chaos, echoing for her return.
However, a portion of herself will be blackened forever– festering into the light and deforming it... for when one is far away from the gray line that separates good and evil, it is easy to spot the difference; but, the closer one gets to that line, the bigger that gray is.”
This child's name is Noemi Vermisial.
