Jesse
"Lights out!" Shouted the guard exiting the room, just as the whole room was engulfed in black.

Jesse laid still on his back, staring frozen at the ceiling. After a few minutes of waiting, he sat up and called in a hushed whisper, "Vi?"

Tonight was the night. Jesse and his sisters had planned this for months, a chance to escape from their prison of over a decade. They were being confined in an underground facility, it was a government run lab in disguise of a research station. Surface dwellers were too busy trying to hide away from the undead and survive in overcrowded towns to care what they were researching, but to the public it was presented as a place to find and test treatments for diseases, and infections caused by the undead.

The reality was far more unsettling.

The only truth in that sentence was that the building was government run, and it was a lab. Although the purpose was to feed the government's greed for power. The government kept files on everyone who had been involved in some inexplicable and puzzling incident, more specifically, people who had been effected by the mutations in the environment. After the planet had been mostly overrun by the undead and order was staring to be established, it became clear that whilst most people who were infected became one of the undead, some developed abilities that were inexplicable.

The research facility was made to run experiments on these individuals, but after they began to die off one by one, the government became desperate to obtain the mysterious powers and began kidnapping those who were descended from the gifted. So, the entire lab was filled with kidnapped children and those suspected of possessing powers. Most people end up staying their whole life confined in the underground, never developing powers. Trapped in a lab with endless tests and no way of freedom. In ost cases this was a better alternative than being discovered that you do possess the powers. The government would try anything to extract and control the abilities possessed, subjecting prisoners to cruel torture and many would not survive the repeated abuse.

The three siblings knew they couldn't afford to pass this opportunity of escape up. They had been content to lie low and live a miserable existence in the lab.

That was until Jesse's powers surfaced.

Hiding his abilities for the past year had been near impossible, and suspicion had started to circle around him. 2 months ago the siblings were tipped off about a break in which would occur tonight, and they could use the opportunity to escape. Receiving the tip was suspicious and probably a trap, but they were desperate.

Violet sat up warily in bed, scanning the room with her newly adjusted eyes. She crept with caution toward the door and pressed her ear to the door. After a minute had passed she turned to Jesse and nodded. The guard had left the doorway. Presumably to help fight the new threat which had arrived. A threat that spelled hope for the siblings.

Jesse instantly made his way to the door next to his sister, leaning his ear to it. In the distance he could here the faint sound of gunfire, and rushed voices, speech inaudible. It seemed that there really had been a break in! Although the didn't know the true reason of the raid, they knew they could use it as a distraction to escape.

"They've really come," Violet commented, seemingly in disbelief by their saviors actually arrived.

Jesse smiled, "Step back."

After Violet was safely away from the door, Jesse began to summon his powers. Curling his fists as he felt energy pool from his chest and through his arm where he had been practicing channelling it. His powers were being able to restore energy to objects and people, he could transfer his own life energy and channel it into objects and people, this worked especially well for healing, meaning Jesse had grown his medicine skills quite quickly. Other than healing, Jesse had begun to learn to channel extra energy into his body, this would make him physically stronger than the average person based on how much he used.

Jesse felt his fist and arm full with power, holding a deep breath, he punched into metal door which flew off it's hinges.

Violet let out an impressed whistle and rejoined him by his side.

"Are you alright?" She asked with an expression of concern.

He let out an exasperated breath and nodded shakily, "Yeah top notch, let's get out of here before they come to investigate."

Violet nodded sharply as the made their way down to the hall. Jesse wasn't used to using his power on such a scale before, obviously having no chance to practice and living a life of paranoia left him watching his back at every turn. Because of this, his body had not been able to keep up with the amount of energy he just used, with time and practice he would become accustomed properly. But they didn't have time.

Making their way through the endless corridors, Jesse and Violet came to a stop at a white door with the sign, 'Confiscated belongings'. Their source told them that the security would be offline for about 20 minutes starting at 22:00, so this was their chance to take what they needed.
Jesse opened the unguarded door, inside were multiple stacked boxes, labeled from a-z. These were home to the belongings of every 'patient' here.

"Over here!" Called Violet as she stumbled upon their boxes. Opening the box, Jesse found his old clothes and favourite red hoodie, an old camera which his father gave him and a hand map.

Chuckling, Jesse said, "I'm suprised they didn't keep the camera for themselves and claim it was theirs! I have some serious skills you know? Could've made a ton of gold."

Violet rolled her eyes and replied, "Out of everything here, you think people would go for your camera?"

She pulled out a belt of hand blades form her box and started pulling them out for inspection. She had her old clothes, signature blades and two handguns, one of which she tossed to Jesse.

Jesse pouted and replied, "Certainly, my photos are one of a kind... I mean clearly you're not skilled enough to understand true art, it's okay."

She ignored his sarcasm and stood up, "Come on, we need to go find Naoko."

"Let's gooo!" He exclaimed with an excited grin.

After collecting a third box, Jesse and Violet made their way to another room further down the corridor. The door of the room was the same as theirs, they knocked on it three times, paused. Then another. It was a knock they'd rehearsed to signal that their identities.

Opening the door slowly was a short girl with her black hair stretching to her waist. Naoko was their third sibling. Not by blood but a bond they made when they all arrived here in their childhood.

"You're late." She stated as Violet tossed her the box full of her belongings.

Jesse scoffed nonchalantly, "Barely! Have you got everything there?"

Naoko nodded eagerly as she pulled out a wooden crossbow and spare clothes. She wore a small smirk as she familiarised herself with the crossbow again, putting it up as if she was about to shoot.

The three made their way to the classified staircase which had been unlocked after all of the security systems went offline. The closer they got to the top, the louder the gunfire was and the more intense shouting became.

Jesse felt his heart plummet when the alarm sounded. The alarm that meant someone had escaped.
Although knew knew it was inevitable that someone had realised their escape, it didn't make them feel any more at ease.

After a few minutes of climbing, the entrance to the ground floor was ahead. Naoko and Jesse remained glued to the wall as Violet warily opened the door, keeping her handgun pointed at her surroundings through the crack in the door. She started shooting.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Jesse gripped his own gun as his heartbeat threatened to cut through his chest. A tenseness started to overtake his body... No. He wouldn't let the nerves control him.

As Naoko in front of him started to move, he forced his limbs as stiff as steel to work, following hurriedly after her. Outside the door, Naoko was in the middle of the room, shooting her crossbow at guards perfectly, as if she hadn't just spent the last decade in a cell.

One down.

And another.

Another.

Jesse saw a guard lurch from behind them, carrying a hand knife and heading straight for Naoko. Seconds later, he was on the floor. Oozing blood from his neck at Jesse's feet. A smoking gun in his hands which were now stained with blood.

Jesse didn't have time to reflect on what he had just done befor Violet was shouting at them from the other side of the room.

"Over here!" She screamed.

Jesse and Naoko turned to see her waving from a corner in the hallway. Presumably a door had been there, now the entire wall had been blown apart. Jesse gathered that this was where they had entered. But more importantly: where they could escape.

After exiting the building, sounds of gunfire continued even despite how far they got. They came to the barbed wire fence. The last piece keep them caged here like animals. Jesse turned to Violet who nodded knowingly and handed him a blade.

Jesse began to cut the weaker parts of the wire at the bottom, cutting and slashing his hands in the process as blood trickled onto his wrists. He saw Naoko turn her head away out of the corner of his eye as he continued to dig under, now scraping mud away from underneath.

He began to channel more energy into his fingertips, although he was already at his limit, he could handle pushing himself a bit more if it meant being free of this hell. His now enhanced fingertips, were peeling the wire further upward and bending it into unnatural shapes, big enough for people to crawl through.

Jesse let out a pained hiss as part of the wire pierced his palm. He wouldn't be able to heal it right away due to the lack of energy and hoped in his head that he could avoid it becoming infected.

"That's enough." Naoko said, pulling him out of his thoughts.

He turned to look at her, who had a look of frightened concern plastered on her face, gaze flicking back and forth to his now completely red palm. Jesse immediately regretted making her feel worried but knew it couldn't be helped unfortunately.

"I'm fine, don't worry about it!" He smiled to her whilst turning his hand palm down, "are you sure it's big enough to crawl under?"

"It's great, you did a good job." Violet smiled down at him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

He crawled under first, then followed by Naoko, then Violet. Jesse turned to Naoko again, who asked, "Does it really hurt?" Her expression turning worried again.

Jesse faked calmness and scoffed replying, "Really? You underestimate me! This is nothing, I can barely even feel it."

"Jesse..."

"I mean it, I can heal it later! For now I just need to preserve some energy, once we get further away from this hellhole then I promise I'll treat it."

Her expression softened as she nodded.

"There's a small fishing village called Zostrar about a 6 hour walk from here," Violet explained, "Once we get there, we can use my savings and find us a guide so we can reach Eskar."

Jesse's face brightened truthfully this time, "Lead the way Vi!"

As they set off, he turned and took one last look behind him. The confinement he had known for the majority of his life was finally over. Once they made it to Eskar, it was an easy city to disappear in, get new identities, and then we would truly have escaped from this hell.

There was no way that he would ever let himself be trapped like that again.
