Malkuth: Grim Towers and Darker Days

Chapter Nine: Jack

Chapter Nine: Jack

Aug 25, 2024

Woozy and disorientated, I have this pinching stomach pain that bubbles and boils up my throat stinging it. My lower back is pressed uncomfortably against something hard as the rest of my body hangs limply. I wiggle, the ache in my back travels to my numb legs and shoulders. I tumble backward landing hard on my backside knocking the breath out of me. Groaning and whimpering in pain, I struggle to my side blinking back the flashes of white stars blinding me.

All around me, there's this intense smell of rain and blood followed by random bursts of screams, roars, and crashing. My vision scatters back into focus. Fear tightens my limbs, and I gape at the scene before me. I'm right in the middle of a battlefield, next to the only tree around.

It looks like the fight broke out in a camp, there are tents, makeshift watch towers, and firepits all over, now scattered in the fighting. A group of people dressed in colorful metal armor and tan leather against a huge group of barbarian-like people dressed in light furs and bright blue and white war paints. Many barbarians are riding monstrous chimera-like creatures with four to six legs and appendages that do not belong.

There's this elephant-like trumpet noise, as a huge six-legged boar creature with snarled fangs and two human-sized tusks charged.  Its panther-clawed feet leave huge gorges in the mud, if one of those paws swiped at me it would completely engulf my body.

Someone shouts and a crowd of fully armored people forms two lines of six slamming down into the ground, gigantic hog-hunting spears twice the size and thickness of a person with a wicked sharp lump of metal at the end. The creature can't stop, it keeps going forward until it slams into the spears squealing like a banshe. Brackish orange blood splashes onto the ground.

The barbarian leaps off the boar's back, raising his gigantic club and swinging at the pikemen. Out of nowhere, a short full-plate woman rushees forward raising her huge tower shield, blocking his attack from hitting the ducking pikemen. Many of them cheer as she shoves the barbarian to the side, and circle him.

There's a battle cry to my right, a scar-covered woman with the brightest pink lips stabs her huge pike downwards from her four-legged mount. This mount looks like a bat with a horse's torso and legs. Bat-like wings protruding from its chest the claws twitching eagerly and moving like a bug's mandibles to push things into its squishy bat face. They are attacking a seven-foot-tall lizard man.

The lizard man is as muscular as he is tall, and covered head to toe in light green scales. He's as scantly dressed as the barbarians he fights, the only metal I see on him would be his blue shoulder pads with spikes. He has this terrifying smile on his elongated dragon-like face, that morphs into a more humanoid flat forehead and cheeks. From his forehead to the top of his head and down his back ending like a tail is a deep forest night green mohawk more fluffy than hairy.

Dragging behind him a heavy-looking mace digs into the ground.  It's covered in spikes, pipes, and barbed wire. With a swift one-handed swing, he breaks the barbarian woman's pike, flicking it off like lint. She zips past him, howling in rage forcing her mount to tightly turn to charge at him again, this time pointing the jagged edge right at his chest.

Calmly he waits until the last second to take a step to the side dodgeing both beast and pike. He swings low tripping the beast. It squeals flipping over and slamming heavily onto its back crushing the rider. There's this horrible snap and the woman goes limp. The creature panics with her still attached corpse limply rolling over it. Bucking it kicks her off running through the chaotic camp.

The lizard man notices me, and with his hand up in a peaceful manner rushes to my side. He then offers me a scaled hand. I take it, trying not to flinch at the blood. He helps me up and says something. I can only shake my head, not sure what he's talking about. He mimics towards the tent giving me a smile that lifts his snout into a curl and softens his eyes. I think I can trust him, even though I don't understand him.

I mimic his motion towards the camp, nodding. He gives me one last smile before rushing back into the fight slamming his mace into another's face. flinch closing my eyes as the sound of flesh ripping and bones breaking echoed around me.

Shaking, I steel my determination, waiting until the coast is clear to dart through. Halfway there, I slip on a slick pile of blood and mud. Coughing, I stagger upwards, trying to find my footing when someone steps in front of me, slamming a thick metal bat next to my head. With a cough, I look up to a huge barbarian with long wide ears and pure white eyes surrounded by blue and green paint. He grins, showing off his missing front teeth. He lifts the bat over his head slamming it down.

A blur of scarlet rushes past me, a flash of light. A tall man with a thin blade parries the bat driving it into the ground, then with a screech, he slides his bade up the bat and up to his arm slicing off a chunk of his muscles. The barbarian screams stumbling backwards barely keeping a hold of his bat.  With a wild scream, he switches hands and swings his bat to do a downward slash.

His scream became a choking grunt as a spear tip pierced his chest. The bat tumbles to the ground and he twitches reaching for it. With a click, the spear breaks into three blades pointing back toward the man, and as it's pulling back there's snapping and crunching as bones, tissues, and organs fall out. He quickly fades falling to the side.

In his spot, a blood-covered woman smirks kicking him to the side. She's taller than six feet but shorter than seven, with an athlete's body and a warrior's stance. Her lava orange hair has streaks of red tied into a long set of braids with beads, glass, bones, and other items throughout it. She reaches up streaking blood across her peach-white cheeks, her lizard amber eyes zipping over to me.

The man happily steps over to who must be his sister punching her in the shoulder. He's a bit taller than her reaching seven or so feet. His scarlet hair is a dark amber braided into several layers filled with ribbons, bones, stones, and glass. His eyes are this bright lava pink and orange as fiery as his sister's hair, he notices his sister's gaze and follows it to me.

I don't know why I am so nervous, but seeing them both watching me like a predator kind of scares me. "What do you need?" I ask looking away from their eyes.

She smirks, eyes sparkling as she gracefully sways over to me. She speaks in several different languages, probably to see if I understand them. I don't. Shaking my head I lean away from her, "I don't understand you." She squats in front of me leaning in. Her brother circles behind me, getting really close too. "I... Can you give me space?" I push her face away from me. She laughs backing away. Her brother leaned around offering his hand. I eye it, but take it. He pulls quickly and stumbles into him hitting my nose against his chain mail shirt. "Ow," I rub my nose, "Why did you do that?"

He feigns innocence lifting both hands and turning around.

Strange... "You both understand me don't you."

They both smile pleased and amused by my reactions. They are bullying me, aren't they? A bit flustered and frustrated I point at the tent, "I need to get there," I glance around, "It's safer than here..." They cackle in agreement, the brother grabbing on arm and the sister the other. I'm much shorter than them both, and easily they lift me up between them.

I kick at the air blushing, "Hey! Let me go!"

Ignoring me they jog to the tent, dodging charging monsters and people yelling. We reach the safe zone, protected by shield-wielding half-plate armored people. They see my predicament, one laughing, another sighing, and a third just shaking their head in sympathy. They say something, and the siblings shake their heads holding onto me like children with a toy they just found in a store.

I do not want to be their plaything. Wiggling I free myself from their grip and turn to them, "I can walk myself."

Again that damn smirk, the woman sliding forward and leaning into my face. Blushing, I step back pushing on her face, "Go Away."

The brother had walked behind me, blowing in my ear and sending chills down my back. "You too," I cry out pushing his face away. It's taking everything for me to keep them both from tormenting me when someone barks an order drawing the sibling's attention away.

A short man, still taller than me, storms over to us. He has pale brown hair tied back into a man bun, with pale brown eyes the color of summer sand. He's lanky limbed with tipped ears. He's not wearing any armor but does have a mace at his side. He's scolding them, but they both don't seem to care whistling as they look away.

When he finishes they both smile walking away. Not without bothering me one last time. The sister brushes my cheeks and blows a kiss while her brother takes my hand kissing the back of it. I'm too stunned to do anything, watching them leave for the battlefield.

The short man sighs rubbing his fingers on the bridge of his nose, seeming to say something apologetic to me.

"I'm sorry, I don't understand."

He smiles kindly, opening the tent flap and waving for me to follow after him.

Hello everyone! How is the chapter pacing? I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on how they like the changes in POV. I do this to optimize the timeline perception and keep the stories linear. However, if this isn't easy to understand then I can change things around a bit. My hope is that readers get the most information with the best method of storytelling without ruining their individual stories. I will make sure that all Chapters have the character's name except for those titled Malkuth. Those characters are not very important to know but are vital for information. :) Again I want to thank everyone for reading my new story and I hope it brings joy to all.
