The Books of Grimoire was a popular VR MMORPG. This was due to its unique system in which skills were gained and earned. The game itself had no classes, going for a classless style that wasn't exactly common at the time of its release. As well, the game utilized an almost Grand Strategy styled aspect of resource management, with players being given a small fief to manage upon completion of a tutorial level. This tutorial, taking place in a Magic Academy, would serve as a location where players would gain their initial skills as well as companions, labeled as "Units" in the game's UI.
These Units would function both as administrators of the player's fiefs, as well as commanders of the player's armies, once the player garnered enough force to command multiple armies, with the player serving as the 'commander' of their first army.
While there were many Units, roughly around 500 potential companions, there was one potential Unit that eluded the player base, and after Data-miners extracted files from the game that showed there were two as-of-yet discovered Units in the game, rumors abound about this character that there was some as of yet undiscovered way of recruiting them. The character, in question, was simply labeled as "The Saintess" by the game, right up until the player's 4th 'year' at the Academy, where the saintess would die at the hands of a Succubus, sparking the war that would be the later half of the tutorial, with the player being given part of the defeated Demon Lord's territory as a part of the reward for defeating them.
Because of this, a small community had formed, dedicated to constantly restarting and going through the first four years leading up to the death of The Saintess, in a vain attempt to potentially recruit her. This had been going on for the better part of 5 years now, with many people having left the group, thinking that it was a lost cause.
Meredith was one such member of that group, at the young age of 16, she had grown fond of the game and was eager for the release of the expansion, which had been announced a year prior. The expansion promised to contain a vast continent for exploration, as well as many more potential Units to recruit, many of which could be found in the Academy, despite most being recruited in what was to be called "The Lost Continent," a landmass that was rumored to be even larger than the current size of the in-game map, with no one aware of how large the map would become.
That day, Meredith was happily heading home from her school, eager to get home as that day was the launch of the expansion. She was both eager to play the expansion and hopeful that The Saintess was among the newly recruitable characters, an end to the long search.
Because of this excitement, Meredith hadn't noticed in time, that her friends had pulled away from the sidewalk. Nor the drunk driver, barreling towards her. At least, she hadn't noticed, until the impact.
Groaning a bit as she awoke, she glanced around holding her head a bit due to the headache caused by the impact. Before her, it was a sight that she hadn't expected. Instead of a hospital room, she found herself in a room made of beautiful marble stones. The room looked like it belonged more to some noble in medieval fantasy than a hospital.
Shaking her head, hopefully, clearing her blurry vision as someone walked into the room. The person had what looked like a maid costume on, though from how it looked, and the canine ears atop their head, it was highly likely that the person was a maid.
Of course, the strange info box that appeared beside their head cleared up any misunderstandings that Meredith might have had.
"Name: Akari the Wolf
Age: 20
Race: Fenris
Professions: Maid Lv 20, Beast-Warrior, Lv 10.
Status: Bored, Hungry."
What stood before Meredith, was one of the recruitable Units in the Grimoire VRMMO. A Berserker-type Warrior who served as The Saintess' hand maiden some time before being recruited by the Hero, in their 5th year of the Academy. That is, a year after the death of the Saintess at the hands of a succubus.
"Madam? Is everything alright?" Akali would state suddenly, tilting her head a bit as she stood at the doorway, the strange box beside her head now showing her status as 'Concerned.' At the time, she was holding a tray in her hands, that had a small tea kettle on it, alongside what looked to be some sort of breakfast cake.
'Madam?' Meredith would think to herself, a confused look on her face as well, as she looked at Akali. While, it was clear from Akali being there, that she found herself in the world of The Books of Grimoire, she didn't notice yet, that she had become someone else at least, until now, as she finally glanced into the mirror found on a mantle in the room.
"Name: Meredith Medbh, the Saintess
Age: 15
Race: Human
Professions: Priestess Lv 10, Saintess Lv 25
Status: Confused, Sleepy."
"Eh?" Meredith said, out loud as she stared at the info box beside her head in the mirror. Her features had become softer now, with flowing light-blue hair that when down past her shoulders. A stark contrast to her old short black hair that she had grown up with. It seems, that after she had gotten run over by a drunk driver instead of finding herself in a hospital, she found herself as the revered Saintess of Grimoire.
The Books of Grimoire, more commonly known simply as Grimoire, was a popular VRMMORPG that focused on player autonomy in all aspects. The game starts with the death of an NPC named merely 'The Saintess.' What happens when, one day, a player wakes up to find themselves as the Saintess doomed to die at the very start?
