"Empire of Cassial"

The Returning Brothers

The Returning Brothers

Aug 28, 2024

That warm, somewhat melancholic moment didn't last because of "Alan." He suddenly woke up in a panic, startling everyone.

“Dem... where is Dem?”

His father tried to calm him: “Calm down, my boy, please. He’s right there on the bed next to you.”

Alan looked over to where his father pointed and saw his cousin lying motionless on the bed. He couldn't feel anything or anyone there; his fear of losing "Demic" was what terrified him. It was a moment that took him back to the time of their abduction.

“Why isn’t he waking up? Is he alright?”

Evering tried to soothe him: “Alan, my brother, please calm down. Dem will be fine; he’s just exhausted.”

Evering approached Alan's bed, trying to calm him. Alan noticed Evering and his fear subsided. He placed his right hand on his chest and bowed his head respectfully.

“Your Highness, it’s a great honor to see you after all this time.”

Evering smiled despairingly, sat on the edge of the bed, and hugged Alan tightly, gently rubbing his back.

“My brother, it's good to have you back... really good to have you back... You just need some rest. Uncle, what do you think about sending him to his own chamber to rest?”

“Yes, I think that’s best.”

“But father... Dem... I’m worried.”

“Are you defying my orders on your first day?” Evering said jokingly.

Then he brushed Alan’s face with his palm.

“You’ve grown well. Your hair is beautiful and long. Don’t worry about Dem; he’ll be fine... I know that what you went through was just to save him. Thank you for bringing both of you back.”

Alan finally calmed down. He then became aware of his surroundings, looking around to see his cousins watching him with expressions of joy and pain.

And then his eyes fell on her at last.

“Judy, is that really you?”

Before he could finish his words, Johan tugged on his ear.

“Oh, uncle, you’re hurting me.”

“Look at you, barely awake and already eyeing the girl.”

Phoenix sipped from the glass of wine he often held and laughed.

“Ha ha ha, look at our cousin; it's good he remembers his fiancée.”

Evering stood up, approached Phoenix, took the glass from him, and threw it away.

“How many times have I told you to cut back on drinking?”

“My brother, don't you get tired of this? You know I hardly get drunk, and sometimes I don’t get drunk at all. The fire in me burns everything that enters my stomach. I just like the taste.”

“One day, I’m going to cut off that long red hair of yours to teach you a lesson.”

Phoenix smiled and bowed respectfully to Evering.

“Your Highness, I apologize for my rudeness. Now that I’m reassured about my siblings, allow me to take my leave.”

Evering replied coldly: “Go.”

Phoenix left with a calm smile on his face, as if he had never been reprimanded by his elder brother. He had always known he was fiery and rebellious, showing strong indifference in his emotions... or at least that’s what he wanted to portray.

“Evi, don’t be mad at him. At least he’s more straightforward than his other siblings. He drinks in front of you, not behind your back like those troublemakers.”

“Uncle Johan, I know. At least they drink in moderation. This fool treats wine like water.”

“My brother, let’s end this side conversation. Uncle, step aside please, I want to examine him.”

“Ivianos, is that you?”

“Yes, Alan, it’s good you remember me.”

Ivianos examined Alan because he was a saint with the trait of healing, inherited from his mother. He began to channel some of his healing power into Alan's body. His long silver hair moved slightly due to the gentle current caused by his power. His presence brought a pleasant aura to the room, with a scent reminiscent of spring. While Carlos Casial’s sons and grandsons possessed high healing abilities, none could match Ivianos, who had inherited it from both sides of his family.

“We're done...” he said with a gentle smile. “Your body is in good condition, but you just need some movement and sunlight. It seems you haven’t moved in a long time.”

Alan let out a long sigh.

“Yes, of course. That stupid wizard sealed me inside one corner of Demic's mind when I followed him to save him. He knocked Demic unconscious, and when I realized it, I tried to use my new trait I had just discovered: possession. I tried to enter Dem's body to pull him out of that fool's grasp, but it seems I didn’t have enough experience to face him. He sealed me in a corner of his mind, and since then, I’ve been in something like a long slumber. I only woke up to Kilian’s voice when he separated us... That’s right, where is he?”

“He ran off as usual, that scoundrel.” Johan said this angrily and turned his face toward the window.

“Oh, wait… Uncle Cassius, where is he? Why isn’t he here? Is he alright?”

“Let’s postpone this discussion, brother. We’ll move you to your chamber now; you need to rest. We’ll continue our talk tomorrow.”

“But…”

Evering placed his index finger on Alan’s forehead, putting him to sleep.

“Brother, that’s the worst spell you learned from our father,” Alexander said with a smile.

“But it was very useful when we used to resist going to bed, ha ha ha, and look, it’s still effective… Well, take him to his chamber and let’s step out so Demic can rest. I can feel his energy; he’s fine, he’ll wake up soon.”

Alan was taken to his chamber, and his father stayed by his side. Johan remained by Demic’s side until he woke up.

In the meeting room, Evering and his siblings were present. Kylos sat on the chair next to Evering’s.

“Kylos, where did you find them?”

“You won’t believe this… They were all this time in his mother’s kingdom.”

“Really?!!! Haven’t we searched there hundreds of times?” Phoenix said with frustration, holding a glass of red wine and continuing to drink.

“Yes, brother, we searched, but I personally met him several times without recognizing him.”

“Brother, please, could you just tell us the story? I don’t like receiving information in bits and pieces.”

“Ivianos is right, brother. I’m curious how they were so close to us,” Alexander said, supporting Ivianos.

“Your Highness, may I speak?”

Evering looked around.

“Why are you calling me ‘Your Highness’? No one here is a stranger… Fool.”

“Forgive my foolishness, Your Highness.”

“Damn it… Just speak.”

Kylos smiled and began recounting the events.

“It all started about three months ago. I decided to return to search in the kingdom of Mirasia, where his mother’s family is, those damned sorcerers. Even after making peace agreements between us, I can’t trust them. They keep claiming that it was Isolda’s father, King Dracon, who sealed our dragons, and since his death in a fire that mysteriously destroyed his palace, all his manuscripts that could have helped us were burned. What fool believes that…”

“Believe me, brother, I also doubt the story of Dracon’s death. I feel he’s hiding somewhere, waiting for a chance to free Serathor. That damned sorcerer thinks that the ruler of Nerygard will grant him immortality,” Elias added, commenting on Kylos’s words.

“You’re right, brother Elias… I too had this doubt. That’s why I decided to return there, to Mirasia… that cursed land… I searched every inch of it again. I kept going alone so that no one would hinder me… I swear my wings almost broke from how much I flew around. One day, I was so exhausted that I decided to land in a field. It was so beautiful I can’t describe it… As soon as I landed, there was a young man tending to the field. As soon as he saw me, he smiled and introduced himself, Christian Aaron. He was a strange young man, charmingly beautiful, with brown hair and black eyes, but I can’t remember his face. He was right in front of me, but I couldn’t distinguish him. I felt a strangeness towards him; why couldn’t I recognize him? Why was his face hard to remember?”

Tears started to fall from Kylos’s eyes as he spoke without realizing it.

“I think you’re a stranger here… Why are you crying? Are you in any pain? Please, take this handkerchief, it’s clean.”

“Brother, you seem to have become very emotional.”

Evering interrupted Kylos’s train of thought with his hand as he wiped the tears that had fallen on Kylos’s face unconsciously.

“Brother, I’m not a child, what are you doing?”

“Ha ha ha, that’s alright, little one, continue.”

He patted his younger brother’s face and smiled. Kylos’s face turned red with embarrassment, and it seemed that the others could barely contain their laughter.

Kylos shot them a scathing look.

“If you don’t shut up, I won’t continue.”

“No, no, please, dear Kal, don’t be angry. I have a good bottle of wine; what do you say we drink while listening to the story? Evi, please agree.”

Everyone looked at Evering… he sighed.

“Alright, just for tonight… but if you become as foolish as your red-haired brother here, I’ll…”

“Alright, Evi, alright, no one here has become like me, just calm down.”

Phoenix distributed the glasses to his siblings until he reached Evering.

“Brother, please.”

“Phoenix, my dear, my beloved brother, how long have you known me?”

“Since you were born, right?”

Evering smiled with annoyance.

“Then, my dear brother, you know I hate wine and cigarettes and can’t stand them, yet you offer me a glass every chance you get.”

Placing his hand on his chest, he bowed slightly with a cheerful smile.

“Your Highness, forgive the ignorance and foolishness of your younger brother.”

Laughter filled the room.

“Alright, just take your seat… Kal, could you continue what happened after you met that young man?”

Kylos took a sip from his glass.

“Well…”

To be continued...
