It was a day off, and Jim and James had encouraged me to go see my grandmother, saying that because of her age, she could die any time, so I finally caved. There was no smoking in the nursing home, which fucking sucked. 

I went over to where she was sitting, staring out the window, I sat across from her and just waited, wasn't sure what to do. She eventually noticed and smiled brightly, "Oh Charlie, its been so long, how is my darling Marie?" 

I looked at her sadly, Marie was my mother's name, but she died giving birth to me, so my father moved in with my grandmother to take care of her, she was already losing herself at the time. 

She sighed softly, "She was such an energetic little child, always running around, making new friends, kind to everyone, just like you." her smile faded and she looked at me more closely. "You look like Charlie, but you have Marie's eyes, why?" 

I gave a forced smile, "I uh... I'm Carter... their son" 

She seemed confused for a minute, "Carter... my Carter died a long time ago, he was a wonderful husband." 

I guess that's where my name came from, good to know. She went back to telling stories of my mother, and asking when she would come visit. I didn't stay long, it kind of hurt to hear so much about my mother, whom I never had the chance to meet. 

I sighed at the memory, going over to Smith in the back. 

"Heya Little Lee" he greeted me with the nickname he always called me, maybe because I was only five foot tall. 

"apparently my grandmother is dead, the funeral's in a few days, so I'm going to be gone for a bit." 

"I'm sorry to hear that, Ch-" He caught himself. "You gonna go alone?"

"Eh, I'll prolly kidnap Sylas for it."

Smith smirked at me, "So, you and Sylas, alone for a few days, going outta town" 

I rolled my eyes, "going to a funeral, and to see if the man outside had any truth to his words. Besides, me and Sylas are just -" I paused, we were hardly friends, but everytime I saw the guy he acted almost like a puppy around me, which was cute. Wait- no. Not cute, that'd be weird. 

"You're blushig" Smith said, bringing me out of my thoughts. 

"Oh fuck off old man" I huffed and took out my phone, calling Sylas.
