Evelyn's mind reeled as she stared at Professor Harris. The kindly, slightly eccentric biology professor she'd known for years now stood before her, shrouded in mystery and speaking of danger.
"Professor, I don't understand," Evelyn said, her voice shaking slightly. "What do you mean I'm in danger? Who am I supposed to be?"
Professor Harris glanced around nervously before stepping closer. "Not here," he whispered. "We're too exposed. Follow me."
He turned and began walking briskly away from the lake, towards a small, nondescript building Evelyn had never paid much attention to before. It looked like a maintenance shed, weathered and unremarkable.
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, her instincts warring between curiosity and caution. But the earnest urgency in Professor Harris's eyes compelled her forward. She followed him to the shed, watching as he pulled out a key and unlocked the door.
As they stepped inside, Evelyn gasped. The interior was nothing like she expected. Instead of dusty tools and equipment, she found herself in what looked like a high-tech laboratory. Screens lined the walls, displaying complex equations and swirling diagrams she couldn't begin to comprehend.
Professor Harris quickly shut and locked the door behind them, then turned to face Evelyn. "I know this is a lot to take in," he said, his voice gentler now. "But we don't have much time. They could have tracked us here."
"Who's 'they'?" Evelyn demanded, her fear giving way to frustration. "Professor, please, just tell me what's going on!"
The professor took a deep breath. "Evelyn, what I'm about to tell you will sound impossible. But I need you to keep an open mind." He paused, his eyes searching hers. "You're not who you think you are. Your entire life – your memories, your identity – it's all been carefully constructed to keep you hidden and safe."
Evelyn felt as if the floor had dropped out from beneath her. "What? That's... that's crazy. I have a family, a past. I remember my childhood!"
"Those memories were implanted," Professor Harris said softly. "Expertly crafted to seem real. But the truth is, Evelyn, you're not from this world. You're not even fully human."
A hysterical laugh bubbled up in Evelyn's throat. "Okay, this has gone far enough. Is this some kind of elaborate prank? Did Lily put you up to this?"
But even as she spoke, something deep inside Evelyn stirred. A part of her she'd never known existed seemed to resonate with the professor's words, as if recognizing a long-forgotten truth.
Professor Harris shook his head, his expression grave. "I wish it were that simple. The truth is, you're a hybrid – half human, half... something else. Something from a world parallel to our own. A world where the laws of physics as we know them don't apply. Where what we would call 'magic' is as natural as breathing."
He turned to one of the screens, tapping a few buttons. An image appeared – a swirling vortex of energy, pulsing with colors Evelyn had never seen before.
"This is a portal to your home world," Professor Harris explained. "It's been dormant for years, but recently, it's shown signs of reactivating. And that's put you in danger."
Evelyn's head spun. This couldn't be real. And yet... hadn't she always felt different? Hadn't there always been a part of her that felt out of place, as if she didn't quite fit in this world?
"Why am I in danger?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Professor Harris's eyes met hers, filled with a mixture of fear and determination. "Because, Evelyn, there are those who would use your power for their ends. People who have been searching for you for a very long time. And now, I'm afraid, they've finally found you."
As if on cue, an alarm began to blare. Red lights flashed across the screens, and Professor Harris's face paled.
"They're here," he said urgently, grabbing Evelyn's arm. "We need to go. Now."
Before Evelyn could respond, the door to the lab burst open. Shadowy figures poured in, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.
Evelyn screamed as Professor Harris pushed her behind him, raising his hands in a gesture she'd never seen before. Energy crackled at his fingertips, and for the first time, Evelyn realized that there was far more to her biology professor than she'd ever known.
As chaos erupted around her, Evelyn felt something awaken inside her – a power she'd never known she possessed. And in that moment, she understood that her life would never be the same again.
Evelyn is a rebellious first year college student at the University of Ithaca where every day is the same: class, work, sleep repeat. But what happens when a series of cryptic messages leads her to the forbidden pars of campus grounds.
