The possibility that the king's men were already here, grew by the moment and she had no time to waste. although she did found a few moments to make her bed as she didn't want the place to look like she ran away, even though that's what she was actually doing.
She grabbed her bag and placed her room key next to the letter. Raven let out an audible sigh, took a final look at the room that was her home for the last three years and went out.
As she predicted, not a soul around at this time of day, only sounds of snoring filled the area.
Raven decided to get out from the back door, located in the kitchen. It would take her to the back alleyways; far from the town’s main roads and more importantly it will minimize the probability of her meeting other people.
“At least the weather is pleasant” she was amused that she managed to find something positive in this dreadful situation. Mari’s constant enthusiasm seem to finally rob off on her “not too hot, not too cold. Perfect for running away” she humored herself and tightened the bag on her shoulders.
She kept glancing at the sky as she briskly walked through the buildings and vegetation. Being a fairy, she was drawn to this magic, but the frequency she kept checking also stemmed from the anxiety that ran deep in her heart.
With each passing minute the golden specks grew brighter, they were high and far enough in the sky to catch the attention of most humans, but there were some with good enough eyesight to spot them.
Raven tried to calm herself and breathed a sigh of relief "No one expects the phenomenon to happen today. everyone is too tired from the preparations..." And with a little luck, no one will notice the fairy dust before the sun rises and hides it from everyone's eyes.
She saw a few cats at some secluded routes, they were looking for food and didn't badge when she passed by them. She kind of wished she could give them some better food ‘maybe some other time’ she thought and one of the cats purred at her as if it was answering that he’s taking her at her word to feed them next time “witty creatures!” she stated.
Raven yawned and rubbed her eyes. The little sleep she got started to affect her “come one raven! You will get some sleep on the train!”
The unexpected voice made her trip over and let out a shriek that sent all the cats running. She was flabbergasted by him suddenly popping up, as she didn't even feel his presence at all.
“HEY!” he approached closer “Are you okay?” he asked with a concerned look on his face, seems like he felt bad for startling her.
He helped her up. Raven didn't want his assist, however he just gripped her shoulders from both sides and lifted her up, before she could object to it.
He stood in front of her and his concerned expression changed into a curious one accompanied by a smile from ear to ear.
This irked her, she glared at him silently, only looking at his golden eyes that twinkled with the same softness as the fairy dust. It amazed and disturbed her at the same time, even so Raven didn't have the time to stop or try to figure out how he appeared so abruptly, honestly she didn't care much as long as he did not pose any danger to her.
‘Whatever’ she thought bitting her bottom lip, turned around ‘better to ignore his existence’ and quickened her steps, even if he followed her, he would get lost, after all, she knew the area better than someone who hasn't been here for more than a day.
Raven turned left, right and even sprinted ahead going in circles, but all her attempts to shake him off, completely failed. He started to feel to her like a gum stuck in the hair, it started to annoy her.
They were already on the outskirts of town, and the sky started to brighten up. She still had about half an hour walk to the train station, but she didn't want to continue with this guy on her tail.
“How much longer will you keep following me?” raven turned to him ‘better to face it straight on’, she had to hurry as the dust was much more visible up there, it was just a matter of time before everyone who woke up start to notice.
“I…..’m not following you” he yawned “I am trying to leave town without being seen.”
“HA…” Raven let out an audible chuckle and rolled her eyes at him “you know I CAN SEE YOU, right?”, she started to think that he wasn't as smart as her subconsciousness tried to make her believe.
The guy smiled as if he was caught red handed “Soooo… where are YOU going at this hour?” he tried to changed the topic. Raven, almost again, answered his question without thinking, She clenched her fists "None of your damn business!" She exhaled "Stop asking me things. I don't know you!" She added angrily, turning her back to him.
It was hard for her not to think that maybe he escaped from some institution, his demeanor felt too strange for her compared to every other humans she ever encountered. There was just something odd about him, she couldn't put her finger on it.
“My name is Bell, nice to meet you” he extended his hand to her although she was standing with her back to him, “now you know me” he happily introduced himself. ‘Geez… this guy…’ she turned to him again
“LISTEN!...” she started to say but the flakes of fairy dust that were already at her eye level, silenced her at once.
Bell just stood there with widened eyes. he was surprised at the language she used, right when she asked him to listen, he still waited on her to continue. Unlucky for Bell, Raven ignored him. she did not look at him, all she tried to do right now is to concentrate and search for information in her mind about the fairy dust; what made it appear earlier or come falling down so rapidly. ‘Brain… work please’ she pleaded with no results.
Her concentration broke off when her ears picked up the sound of heavy metallic footsteps on the ground, advancing to their exact location. only specific type of people wore such heavy footwear; the hunters and king’s guards, she didn't want to encounter either.
“i can’t believe this is happening…” she said to herself, she looked back at Bell and saw that he must’ve heard the footsteps too, his head was tilted a bit to the side and Raven saw an expression she never seen on him before; serious and calculated.
At that moment one thought appeared - to the instance when he asked her if she met any fairies. Raven felt her strength leaving her body, she knew she was powerful and courageous but something just made her freeze in place while her mind screamed at her to run.
“Dammit” she cursed, it was way harder than she expected to make use of her powers, they were dormant for years and the little she could do; like mind reading was useless as it required a lot focus from her. seeing or listening to great distances wasn't something helpful either in her mind. She needed to find the thread for speed or teleportation magic, she learned about them in theory but she never had the opportunity to put it to practice.
‘So much for natural inherent fairy magic’ she thought ‘maybe i should just ran really fast” she considered but this weird dude presence made her think it was futile, he could catch her before she makes a first stride.
He intensely looked in her blue eyes, this caused Raven to lose concentration and she felt how her magic dimmed. ‘no…’ her mind became foggy ‘I… i just needed more time’. she couldn't think about anything anymore, her legs moved on their own, running away. Away from Bell and from the people who could be the hunters.
As Raven predicted beforehand, Bell caught up with her easily “now… my only option is to fight my way out of it…” she whispered and started to strategize how to tackle him. But before she managed to do anything, Bell strongly grasped the palm of her hand and picked up the pace. running even faster while pulling Raven behind him into the wide sunflower field. His act astonished her so much that she almost forgot; he might be an enemy, leading her into a trap.
