"Empire of Cassial"

Laughter and tears part1

Laughter and tears part1

Aug 30, 2024

In the early hours of the morning, Démic awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside his window. He looked around to find his uncle Johann sitting in a nearby chair, his head slightly tilted as if he had been alternating between sleep and wakefulness, but ready to stay by his side no matter how long it took.
Everything seemed unusually calm, as if the world had decided to grant him a brief respite. But this time, he had no intention of enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature. He jumped out of bed with enthusiasm, as if he were a child again, quickly putting on whatever clothes he could find and rushing out of his room into the palace courtyard. He made a tremendous noise, waking Johann, who rubbed his eyes and stretched his stiff body from sitting on the chair.
When Démic burst out of the room unexpectedly, Johann stood frozen for a moment, staring at the open door in disbelief. He hadn't anticipated this sudden awakening or the subsequent burst of energy. Slowly, he wiped his face with his hand, as if trying to wake himself from an unexpected dream.
He surveyed the chaos left behind by Démic: the blanket thrown haphazardly over the bed, the scattered pillows, and the furniture in disarray as if a small storm had hit the room. The uncle sighed with a half-smile of displeasure and half-pleasure, realizing that Démic had returned to his usual vitality, albeit in the chaotic way he had been accustomed to since childhood.

"Démic!" the uncle called out with a tone that mixed firmness with suppressed laughter, knowing his call wouldn't stop the surge of energy that had suddenly appeared in the boy who moments ago had been lost in nightmares. Johann took a deep breath, shaking his head as he followed his nephew’s steps, wondering how this child, who had just returned, could create such a mess in moments.
Johann had no choice but to follow the unmistakable sound of Démic waking everyone with his shouting. The uncle walked with slow steps, half concerned and half lost in internal laughter, trying to appear serious in the face of his nephew's chaos, but deep down, he was glad to see life returning to the palace with Démic’s return.
He stood in the middle of the courtyard, glancing around as if searching for something. Then suddenly, he raised his head to the sky and shouted in a booming voice that shook the palace walls: "Wake up, you lazybones! This is no time for sleeping!"

His shout echoed throughout the palace, creating a state of chaos and astonishment. Windows and balconies began to open one by one, revealing the heads of his siblings looking at him with amazement and suppressed laughter.

"What on earth are you doing? Is this how you wake people up at this hour?" Phoenix shouted from the balcony, while the others peered out with half-sleepy and half-laughing faces.

Démic laughed loudly, raising his arms as if inviting them all to come down to him. None of his siblings hesitated to join him; Phoenix leaped enthusiastically from the balcony, skillfully landing in the courtyard to embrace Démic in a strong hug. It was a surprising show of emotion for Phoenix, but he couldn't hide his happiness or suppress his longing. The others followed, jumping or rushing down the stairs, unable to resist the joy of the moment.
The courtyard turned into a stage for laughter, hugs, and small celebrations among family members who had long awaited this reunion. Démic was at the heart of it all, feeling as if everything was right again and that he had finally returned to where he belonged.
Evering, who was used to quiet mornings, felt that this morning was different. For the first time, he was embarrassed with his wife. His heart, which had been weak for some time, was unusually agitated. His pulse raced wildly as he heard Démic’s strong and joyful voice reverberating through the palace. His younger brother’s voice was like a storm, shaking the palace walls and filling the space with laughter and cheerful sounds that he hadn’t heard in a long time. For a moment, he and Yursina forgot their embarrassment.
Yursina got up and put on a robe over her nightwear to cover her body, then peered out from the balcony. Evering approached the balcony slowly, trying to see the source of the commotion. His eyes were tired, and his pale face revealed long-standing exhaustion. When he glanced down at the courtyard, he saw Démic standing in the center, shouting at the top of his lungs, calling everyone to wake up. The scene was joyful, but Evering’s heart struggled with the flood of mixed emotions—joy, shock, and concern for his brother who he thought would never return with such vigor.
"Evering, come here, I’ve missed you!" Démic called out with pure joy.
Evering looked at his brother with what could be described as the most sincere and affectionate smile he had ever shown in his life, but it didn’t last long. Evering suddenly felt dizzy, and his weak body began to tremble. He nearly collapsed, his hands gripping the edge of the balcony ineffectively. At that moment, his wife Yursina was nearby. She rushed to him, her eyes full of concern, grabbing him firmly by the arms to support him and prevent him from falling.

"Evering!" she called out in a voice filled with tenderness and worry, trying to calm him. Evering looked at his brother with tear-filled eyes, not only from the strain but from the long-awaited joy and longing.

Yursina held Evering close to her chest, gently stroking his back to calm his racing heart. “Calm down, Evie, don’t overexert yourself,” she whispered soothingly, understanding how deeply seeing Démic so lively again affected him.

Evering, trying to regain his composure, closed his eyes and took a deep breath, attempting to steady himself. But he couldn’t help but smile, a smile filled with the nostalgia and joy he hadn’t felt in a long time. He knew his heart couldn’t handle much more, but seeing his brother full of life again gave him a glimmer of hope, even if it was just for a brief moment in the comforting embrace of his wife, who had never left his side.

While Démic stood in the center of the palace courtyard, enjoying everyone’s reactions and the sound of his laughter echoing around, his eyes landed on Evering, who was peering out from his balcony. Joy filled his heart at the sight of his older brother, but that joy quickly turned into sharp concern when he saw Evering staggering and nearly collapsing.

In an instant, everything changed. The looks of joy and smiles vanished, replaced by fear. Démic jumped from his spot and rushed towards the palace, running without pause, his heart aching as he saw Yursina desperately trying to support Evering and prevent him from falling.

The other siblings noticed what had happened too. Phoenix, who had been standing still for a moment, took off running after his siblings, his face reflecting his visible concern, while Kyloas tried to catch up with quick steps, attempting to calm everyone down.

Démic arrived first, his eyes filled with worry, his hands trembling as he approached Evering. “Evering!” he called out with a troubled voice, gently placing his hand on his older brother’s shoulder, trying to assist Yursina in supporting him.

Evering lifted his head with difficulty, trying to smile at Démic despite his evident exhaustion. “I’m fine…” he whispered weakly, but he couldn’t hide his frailty or the tears welling up in his eyes.

Phoenix arrived next, followed by Kaylos and the rest of the siblings, all trying to offer assistance. Phoenix took Evering’s hand, patting it gently as he tried to calm him. “Calm down, brother, we’re here with you,” he said firmly yet tenderly, his eyes glistening with concern and fear for his sibling.

Kyloas stood by, his stern face hiding a mix of fear and worry, carefully observing the scene and quickly instructing soldiers and servants to move aside and clear the way.

Démic remained by Evering’s side, gripping his hand tightly as if trying to infuse strength into his weary brother. “I won’t let you fall apart now, we’ve finally come together,” he said with emotion and hope, trying to steady Evering and uplift his spirits, while Yursina never left her husband’s side, gently stroking his head and whispering calming words.

It was a moment filled with mixed emotions, as the siblings, accustomed to relying on Evering for support, now found themselves needing to support and strengthen him in his most vulnerable moment.

Just then, a new arrival burst into the room, having heard about the situation as soon as he woke up.

“Evie, what happened to you?” he shouted in concern.

Seeing Evering on the verge of collapse, Démic’s heart raced, overwhelmed with anxiety and fear. Despite his own tension, he tried to reassure his siblings.

“Everyone calm down, there’s no need to panic!” Démic said firmly, but with warmth and reassurance. He stood beside Evering, helping to steady his steps, and along with Phoenix, placed Evering on the bed.

“Evering, my brother, we’re here now, everything will be alright,” Démic said, placing his hand confidently on Evering’s shoulder, trying to reassure his incapacitated sibling. He looked at his brothers and said, “Everything is under control. We’ll do what’s necessary to provide the right care for Evering, so there’s no need to worry.”

He then turned to Phoenix and Kaylos, asking them to help organize things and keep unnecessary visitors away. “Both of you, we need some calm here. Phoenix, make sure everything is running smoothly. Kyloas, please manage the situation in the palace. Alex, please clear the servants out of here; let them focus on their work. It’s good to see you… Evianus, brother, please give him some of your essence; he needs to relax.”

With his calm and professional manner, Démic tried to manage the situation effectively while continuing to support Evering and reassure everyone that things were under control. Each brother took on his task and quickly returned to the room, where Evianus applied his healing essence to Evering, resulting in some improvement.
