When I finally sat at my desk I reached for my phone and send a text to Stephanie hoping that we can talk later on today. I should find a way to make things up between us or I should make a visit. It only takes three hour by bus and I’m sure Aunt Jocelyn wouldn’t mind me going. She has trusted me enough and I’m sure she’ll allow it. I yawned as I tried to pay attention to the lesson and by lunch I was sitting at the table with my head down wanting to take a nap.
“How are you this tired?” Millie asked and was fixing their make-up.
“I’ve been having problems sleeping,” I admit and sat up to wake myself. “I might knock out when I get home.”
Millie grabbed their make-up bag to put everything away and turned to me, “Your going to have horrible bags under your eyes.”
I glanced at them and saw Ruby passing by giggling with her friends. “Do you know her personally?” I asked curiously.
“Who?” Millie looked around until seeing Ruby sitting at table and it seemed crowded compared to our table. “Ugh, you can say that. Ruby and I have known each other since elementary but we never tried being friends. There’s a difference between classmates and friends. So, I know of her but not know her personally. Why?”
“Just curious,” I mumbled.
Millie looked between me and Ruby and shook their head. “I’m sure your girlfriend is better then Ruby. Don’t go cheating on her with miss popular.”
“And the jerk that you called gay? I have him in my other classes and he doesn’t talk that much in those class, is it only you he bothers?” I asked.
“I’ve known him since the end of seventh grade. Maybe we had class together, but that was when we met and he also noticed the way I started dressing differently. I was practicing on how to put on make-up and that made me more of a target for them.” They explained and shrugged their shoulders before checking the time on their phone. “There’s some good people here though. I keep to myself so they won’t get bullied or talked about like they are doing to you.”
I wanted to roll my eyes but resisted and looked around wonder who could be Millie’s friend. “I want to meet them.”
Millie started putting their things away and shook their head, “I don’t mind… But I hardly talk to them so I’m not sure if they still consider me as their friends or they are friends with me out of pity. It’s sort of sad.”
“Alright. I thought I should find better friends if it’s with the ones you like,” I comment and the bell rung notifyingthat lunch is over. “My friends haven’t really messaged me besides Stephanie and sometimes my best friend Isaac. I think I might go visit them soon…”
Millie didn’t say anything as they grabbed their backpack and stood up then asked, “Can I come?”
“Would your parents allow you?” I asked.
“They might not care honestly.” They mumbled.
“If you don’t get in trouble and don’t report you for running away then it’s fine,” I replied and we started walking.
“You think I would run away?” They asked, confused.
“I feel like you’ve thought about it,” I replied and I opened the door to the building where our class would be at. “With the way people are here.”
Millie sighed loudly and shrugged their shoulders, “I have but it’s hard to do that our age and I need a lot of money to survive.” They confessed.
“You only have this year left to get into a good college and dorm out somewhere else,” I informed them and stood outside their classroom. “I think my grades are good enough to get into a college somewhere close to where I lived. It was where Stephanie and I had planned since last year.”
“Least you have a plan,” Millie mumbled and stepped away from me. “Alright then. Better get to class. I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah, see ya,” I said, heading to my class.
