On a cloudy, tension-filled morning, Ren Haruki began his day by examining the piled-up files on his desk. The Mika Yoru case occupied a large part of his thoughts, but there was an unsettling feeling that things were still vague and incomplete. As he delved deeper into the details, he received an unexpected call from one of his colleagues at the police department.
"Ren, we have a new case that might be related to what we're working on. Another student's body was found at a nearby high school, and the crime scene has similar marks to those we found on Mika's body."
Ren froze for a moment. "Similar marks? Do you think we have a serial killer?"
"We don't have conclusive evidence yet, but it's a possibility. I think you should come and see for yourself."
It didn't take long before Ren was standing at the new crime scene. The place looked like an old, abandoned yard behind the school, filled with wild grasses and tangled trees. The body was carefully laid among the weeds, with the same mysterious mark on its wrist that Ren had found on Mika's body.
Ren walked slowly towards the body, observing every detail. He had no doubt that this killer had a greater motive than just random killings. It seemed there was a specific pattern or a message he was trying to send.
As Ren examined the scene, he noticed something else: in a dark corner, away from sight, he found a stone wall engraved with precise symbols. These symbols were not present at Mika's crime scene, but they looked disturbingly familiar. He remembered that they resembled those discussed by Dr. Shiro Nagato in their previous meeting.
After finishing the examination of the crime scene, Ren returned to his office to find a new batch of files waiting for him. Unsolved previous crimes, some containing similar elements. The crimes spanned years, but they had not been linked together until now.
As he reviewed the reports, he received another call, this time from Nakae Haru, Mika's close friend. "Ren, I think I have something that might help you with the case. I've been thinking about what happened, and there's something bothering me."
Ren felt a sense of relief hearing Nakae's voice, which sounded calm yet troubled at the same time. "What did you find?"
"I remember seeing a suspicious person hanging around the school days before Mika was killed. He was acting strangely, and I couldn't see his face clearly, but he was wearing a long dark coat. Now that I think about it, I saw him coming from the same direction where the new body was found."
"Do you think he might be connected to both crimes?"
"I don't know, but the feeling I had back then was unsettling, like something strange was going on."
Ren was struck by a wave of excitement; it seemed there were new leads to follow. But with every new step, things became more complicated, as if the crime was forming a vast web of intertwined puzzles.
Meanwhile, someone was watching from afar, an unidentified figure. No one knew yet that these crimes were merely part of his intricate game. He enjoyed torturing the detectives with his little plays, and the closer they got to the truth, the more thrilled he became.
But there was one thing he avoided, something he wasn't ready to reveal just yet. His plans were focused on drawing the detective into a game more complex than he could imagine, a game whose outcome would only be unveiled at the very last moment.
At this time, Ren decided he needed to return to Dr. Nagato to get more analysis on the new symbols. He realized he needed to broaden his investigations to encompass all aspects related to the case.
On his way to Dr. Nagato's office, Ren had no idea that what awaited him there would change the course of the investigation entirely, revealing the depth of the darkness surrounding these crimes.
As events intertwined and the shadows deepened, things began to take a more dangerous turn. These were not just simple murders, but a series of events tied to an ancient secret, yet to be uncovered.
