Case Investigation: Day 150
The situation is already worse, and it seems that it just got even worse with time and effort. Her mental state is going down fast, making her consider giving up on her life as well. But her mind doesn’t think of giving up yet. Her detective within her tells her that something is not going right.
And even though all the therapy sessions were recorded in the presence of another professional. And then they were analyzed later on. She didn’t receive news of anything negative in the process.
Even though Caius does seem to have positive intentions, his actions are doing the opposite. Or maybe it is just a coincidence, but even in this state, Maya is certain that some foul play is in action, somewhere in the process. She needs to see it. She needs to understand it and reveal it. But how?
And for that reason, she collects all the tapes and decides to submit them for further expert review. There are a lot of questions that are still unanswered, and these incidents could not be the result of the ‘right thing but wrong time’ situation. She finally decides that locking herself wouldn’t help her at all. Now, she needs to step out from her cocoon and face the realities, with courage and bravery. She has a life to save, and this time... it is her own.
After a long time of self-quarantine, she departs the comfort of her home and takes local vehicles. External voices are still bothering her. Things are not the best, but there have been many improvements in her physical health, and she is continuing her medication as well, which allows her to at least keep her composure normal most of the time.
And today, after a long while, she visits the bureau, visits Rebecca who is stunned seeing her present condition. Things took a dramatic turn way too quickly for Maya and it rarely happens in real life. Her colleagues are worried about her but they never thought the matter to be that serious, since she didn’t disclose such information with her office at all. Up until this point, Lily was the only one who knew about her condition.
But Rebecca is seeing her after a long time, hoping to see an improvement in her condition. But then, seeing her in this state makes her heart drop because Maya’s present health is worse from Rebecca’s point of view. She doesn’t realize that Maya has gone through way too much in just a matter of a few weeks.
It is concerning, but there is a happy feeling involved as well. Rebecca welcomes Maya with open arms and they both discuss the case matter for a few minutes and then Maya opens up about her situation. The day is filled with shocks for Rebecca. She gasps on every part of Maya’s narration. She is angry at Maya for not telling her any of her situations. She is sad that Maya has faced such traumatic conditions in the past and she is relieved that things are getting better. But then the heavy news brings her shoulder down when Maya breaks the file news to her, telling her about her suspicions of foul play in this process. It was a heart-wrenching moment for Rebecca and she voices, “What the hell? Who would be sick enough to do something like that? Even criminals are better... well, not exactly. But you are saying...”
Maya nods and completes her sentence, “that the therapy sessions need to be reanalyzed. I have used unofficial resources till now, and they don’t bring any red flags on paper, but my instinct is telling me that something is not right.”
It is clear that somewhere, something is not going by the books. Although it may seem like it is in the picture, there is a big problem underneath all of these facades. She decides to find it out and shares medical documents and records with Rebecca for investigation.
Rebecca completely agrees with her statement and suggests, “I can help you with the official and trustworthy resources. They are more professional, quick, and reliable. I’m sure we’ll find the right answers in our reports.”
Then she sends the video clips for the mental therapy methodology and medication analysis. And shares the staff details with Maya so that she can contact them and add anything else if she needs. Rebecca is certain that Maya is not telling her complete suspicion at the moment. So, she waits for the time when Maya will feel safe and comfortable enough to share all her thoughts with her. Until that happens, she needs to make sure that Maya gets everything that she needs for the path ahead.
Later that day, Maya opens up more, and she fully expresses her suspicion about Caius and requests her to keep things between themselves. Rebecca follows Maya’s wish but feels relieved that Maya is finally trusting her for this process.
They share the videos, and medication records with the team, and now they wait for the results.
It took 2 days for the results to show up. Rebecca sends her digital copies of all the results. And, weirdly, she feels relieved after seeing the negativity in the result. It is proof that she isn’t out of her mind yet. Results are showing multiple signs of manipulation in the process! But how could it be possible?
Traces of Psychedelics (psychedelic drugs/hallucinogenic drugs) were found in her system. And some harmful psychotic episode-inducing and fear-inducing drugs were also found in her blood. These are the kind of drugs that usually don’t show up in the medical reports early on and they trigger specific parts of the brain that result in hallucinations and multiple physical symptoms. As time passes, they alter the conscious experience of a human being completely. They make a new reality where a person experiences their worst nightmares, turning into realities.
These medications are usually very targeted, and they are given only on specific necessities, and even then in extremely moderated amounts. While Maya was given a consistently high dose of such a prescription, leading her to experience the worst nightmares every day.
Such conditions take several months and many times, years to take such drastic consequences. But for Maya’s case, it was different because she was ingesting high doses of such drugs on a regular basis. But now the point is, how did she ingest the hallucinogenic and psychotic drugs? And how did she end up in those situations where she was targeted with such medications without her knowledge? She is a detective and has all the privileges of security that a person can ask! So what is going on? How was it possible? What went wrong? How?
Well… now she feels like she would need to take charge of her life. More than she ever had. Otherwise, she will never be able to move past these hellish experiences.
As she sits back, contemplating the past moments, she realizes that it all started on the very first day of Martha’s case. When visited the crime scene, she stumbled in her way. For the first time in her life, she lost a person who was standing in front of her. That was the first time when her eyes faded and she couldn’t see anything for a quick moment. But it was too early for all of this. All her suspicions regarding everything just came surging in her mind.
Who is the person with her all the time? Who is desperate and capable enough? Her first instinct hints to her... it is Caius. But she did not know him then. And she didn’t contact Caius that many times in total for him to be capable of doing such a thing? How could he find ways to do something so elaborate in her life without coming into the light of suspicion? But if not him, then who? And even though she can never imagine anyone being against her in the bureau, she now has to think that there can be such a possibility as well.
It is time for her to be over-skeptical about everything. She is ready to suspect even herself if needed. So, she invites Rebecca to her home to further brainstorm the situation. And for her safety, she installed more CCTV in the home, because even though she trusts Rebecca with her life but, at this moment, she can’t afford to trust anyone.
Rebecca visits her and the conversation starts.
Maya: I believe that there are not many people who are capable of such things. Not in our team, anyway.
Rebecca: Yes. And how many people do we have in our team? Only 5. Me, you, Runo, Daniel, and Lily.
Maya: Yes. That’s exactly what I was thinking. The bureau staff are not involved in most of our communications and I hardly know the officers that are not in our team. Other communication happens only on-the-need basis. These 5 people are the only ones who can have that kind of access to my life.
Rebecca: Yes. And there was one thing that I didn’t tell you, since it was informed to me later, separately. It is not mentioned in the reports.
Maya: What is it?
Rebecca: The medications that were given to you…
Maya: Yes…
Rebecca: They were different from what was prescribed to you.
Maya stayed silent for a moment, trying to understand what she just heard.
Maya: I don’t understand. What…?
Rebecca: The prescriptions were correct. They were regular medications for general symptoms that you were having at that time.
Maya: Yes, because I purchased them.
Rebecca: Yes. But even though the medication boxes were correct, when you submitted the medications for testing, they all were different.
Maya: I was taking drugs, Psychedelics, and Psychotic drugs voluntarily? With my own hands?
Rebecca: Yes. And as you said, you personally purchased them. How?
Maya: Well, I purchased them online and whenever they were not available, got help with that.
Rebecca: Friend?
Maya: Yes.
Rebecca: Who might that be?
Maya: Well, Lily was kind enough… wait… no. That can’t be possible. I can’t think like that.
Rebecca: What do you mean?
Maya: Whenever she had time, Lily helped me with most of my shopping and appointments.
Rebecca: Well, I don’t think she would do anything like that either. But you know, what needs to be done needs to be done.
Maya: Yes, I will ask her about it.
Rebecca: What do you mean? You can’t treat her differently. The investigation is the same for everyone. You have learned that in both; books and the hard way.
Maya: Yes, but…
Rebecca: If she is innocent, and I believe that she is… so she wouldn’t mind you doing this. She has been in this environment for quite some time to understand that every investigation requires 100% effort, regardless of what you need to do.
Maya: Yes, you have a point. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind me being skeptical in this process. She has known me for a while now. She knows me better than I know myself.
Rebecca: Great then. Don’t worry, and press on with your 100%! And As for the sake of your mental peace, don’t leave me out of the suspect list. Clear everyone carefully so that you can trust them and move forward.
Maya: Right. Thanks for that. I’ll proceed with the rest.
Rebecca: Perfect. And let me know if you need my help in any part of the process. I’ll give you the letter of permit for all these checks. You can directly contact the main investigation staff and get involved in all the steps that you want to get done. Done?
Maya smiles and replies: Done. Thanks!
Rebecca embraces her one more time before leaving. And gives her best wishes along. But along with her wishes, her superstitious mind couldn’t help herself, so she gifts her a statue of The Sleeping Saint Joseph and a holy relic, The Holy Prepuce, from her nearby church, infused with positive vibes. This little relic and statue seemed to be the only thing positive in her home right now. She believes that it will give her power, it will give her faith to take wise steps ahead. To confront the evil and find peace.
