The men looked to be agreeing with her, but the King’s expression in front of her changed slightly, his jaw clenching. A few seconds later, his anger was back to normal. He cleared his throat and looked straight in her eyes, hiding inside him the fury he had from giving in all his wealth.
“I am sure you will become a great queen, Miss Gray. Now, I invite you and my son to the stage, so the ceremony can now begin officially!” Frederick commented, clapping his hands together afterwards.
Soon after, Emelyn and her husband were on the stage, standing next to each other. Throwing Sarah an emotionless expression, he forced a smile and looked straight ahead of him, his eyes wandering all over the place. The man grabbed her hand without a single hesitation, wanting to fake the act some more.
“My dear, dear people of Kordania! I am grateful that you all came to see us today for that important event! Today is the day I’m gaining one more year, but today is also an important day. Not only for me, but for you also, citadians! Do you know why? Because today, I’ll change the world, today, I’ll make the world a better place! May the insecurities never appear again and may everyone live in peace!”
The people roared with excitement, jumping, and screaming Edward’s name or Emelyn’s. All eyes were on them, and it was hard to ignore them. They were going to save the citizens from that tyranny, whether Frederick wanted it or not. Today was an enjoyable day.
“I’ll ask you one question, my people.” Edward continued when they calmed down. “One single question: Did anyone agree with my father’s choices? Did anyone agree that women are inferior and that the King deserves more then his people?”
Right after asking so, the silence reigned in the room. A man hesitantly raised his hand, then brutally nudged by his neighbor with a cough and an elbow hit. Noticing nobody seemed to agree with his father’s ideas, the new king’s expression lightened as he joined his hand, a genuine smile creeping up his face- it was a dream come true!
Emelyn, her, stood there in shock. She always thought that Kordanians were ruthless people with no heart, that refused to respect each other, but visibly, she was wrong. Secretly, they all wanted tyranny to stop, even though they pretended the contrary. At the single though, the young woman felt her eyes water with satisfaction with the feeling of a done task, her shoulder shuddering in pride.
“Today is a change! A change in the world, a change in our legacy!” Edward raised his voice, raising his hand in the air as he nodded vigorously. “Done are all the lies, done are all the days you spend alone! Today, may everyone join hands to our new saying: Freedom is the key to everyone’s good!”
Children repeated after him, the women jumping with their fists in the air in respect, the men nodding while dancing with each other.
“Edward! Edward!” The people yelled, crying in happiness. They were finally free. They wouldn’t be living in fear anymore. Now, they could be happy in a place like Kordania.
Stealing a glance at the king’s father, she noticed he seemed furious. Frederick’s eyebrows were arched in irritation, looking straight ahead, his face red in anger. He seemed to be holding in his frustration, as his son’s ideas were completely against his. The man didn’t expect that giving his eldest heir a lesson would encourage him to do the contrary.
“Silence!” Frederick then growled, raising a hand, stopping everyone.
As the gazes went back to the old king’s, fear went back. Babies started to cry, as he gave them looks of disdain, scoffing with a look of pain and frustration. Frederick then stared at his son with hatred, his expression growing into a scowl.
“Edward Meyer. I told you that you needed to share my ideas with the world!”
“Never! Our people doesn’t deserve your cruelty. They’re all unhappy when they see you, watch their faces!” The concerned one replicated coldly, his grip tightening on Emelyn’s hand.
Sarah’s heart started to beat faster, closing her eyes in fear. Was Frederick going to change ideas and take the throne again, eliminating her and her husband from the equation? She hoped not, because those unhappy citizens didn’t deserve him. The old king was a monster, a problem in society. If there was one person the empire didn’t want, it was him.
Even though the man thought that everyone loved him badly and were screaming his name in happiness, he was wrong. In fact, they were all crying, trying to suppress their tears of happiness. Since King John, a few centuries ago, the people of Kordania always lived in fear and terror, obeying the King. Not because they respected him, but because they feared what was going to happen if they didn’t do so.
The queen always heard from her friends back in Mayain that she was part of the lucky ones, to be born in such a good family, with a high status. They weren’t wrong, yet the issue was that she didn’t enjoy it this long. Years passed fast, and the girl barely had that joy for six years. Right after that, fear was the only emotion she knew. As well as the only one she dared to show.
Yet right now, seeing how terrified the people were was making her want to throw up. She felt like if she didn’t do something, she was going to regret it for all her life. So the woman rolled up her sleeves and cleared her throat to gain everyone’s attention, showing the man who broke her life a look full of hatred.
“Let me tell you something, Frederick Meyer. You used to be powerful. Feared., Everyone were on their knees to see you extend the power of your legacy. If you told your citadians, told the world about what you did, they would want to break you down. You broke Mayain apart. You had children with a woman you never loved just to give them your thoughts. Look at Edward. He never agreed with this, yet you forced him to lead troops at six years old, traumatizing him for the rest of his life!
How could you do this to your own child? And right after your two sons came to life, you ruthlessly killed your own wife! Couldn’t you leave your own children think by themselves?
Okay, I must agree I checked in to see who made you like that and noticed it was all from a man called John. And you know what made him like that? His pride, his envy, his wrath. You’re just like that. Trust me, it’s not a compliment.
With everything that you’ve done and the power that you’ve earned, don’t you think that tyranny should get to an end. Admit it, you’re dying, so you forced all your bad knowledge on your eldest child! You made a war in Wron just because you wanted to show you were a great king not to kill my family in Pyril, but you didn’t even care.
Your old friend that showed you the truth was there, so you decided to go on and try and eliminate him, so he couldn’t share the truth with the entire world! You tried and failed. That pain, that pressure...
Did you really have to tear everyone apart? No. You’ve broken hearts and tried to repair your mistakes, but nothing can get repaired. Nothing breaks like a heart. The one that breaks it down can never save the other, as that person would never trust the other one.
You’re looking for approval? Love? Power? You worked very smart, Frederick...No, I’M just kidding. You’ve could’ve been a better person and showed everyone your strong you were mentally, but you unfortunately were too scared to do so. And you think your people would agree with you after everything you’ve done? Well, you’re wrong, and there’s no way I’ll call you Your Majesty again. Your pride made you a monster.”
Nobody dared to speak, but by watching around the room, Emelyn figured they were all agreeing. Looking to her heart side, the girl noticed Edward staring at her in satisfaction, nodding vigorously. She had said everything she dreamed of telling this man since ever she saw him, and now, it looked like others agreed.
Frederick’s face became white, as he shook with fear. Visibly, Sarah saw right through him, yet he couldn’t admit it to himself. His gaze was lost in the air, and he couldn’t speak. As the man tried to speak, the only sound that came out of his mouth was a weak whimper.
“You’re wrong, M-Miss Gray...I didn’t make any mistakes...” The old king muttered, clenching his jaw, as if he couldn’t figure she knew the truth.
To her surprise, the citizens started laughing, everyone screaming Emelyn’s name and Edward, their distress slowly growing into hope. The people jumped in happiness, the couple in front feeling prouder than ever, feeling like they did a task they always wanted to finish.
“Guards!” The King called out, as five knights came and grabbed his father, leading him out of the room. The man started trying to pull away, his eyes wide with anger, but it was no use- the grip was too tight.
“I’ll get my revenge, Sarah Gray!” Frederick promised loudly, before the guards shut the door after him.
Silence reigned for a few seconds, but then, everyone started crying and jumping with joy and satisfaction. Emelyn’s eyes started to water, and she threw her husband a prideful look, happy with what she said. Now, the girl was the queen of Kordania, and she’d help the world become a better place.
“Glory to the King, Glory to the Queen! May a new Kordania begin!” The citizens claimed, as the concerned ones sat on their thrones.
Emelyn smiled proudly, blowing a kiss to the crowd as she released Edward’s hand. That’s it, she did it. But then it hit her- her original mission was to break Kordania and Edward, running away after. Yet the woman didn’t know what she was supposed to do...
She wanted to break Edward down and become the new Queen of Mayain and grow onto a better place, and yet it wasn’t the end...
