The palace never notified anyone about the abduction for several days growing infuriated, Chief Wincott was the one who made the public announcement about the abduction of the child and informed the public on what had happened. Posters were made up with the boy’s image on it and was distribute around the city of Donair and the outlining towns in the area. The citizens of Donair realized it was the King's son that was missing and dubbed him the lost prince. The Chief went so far as to go on national television asking the citizens for their help in finding the child’s whereabouts. Even issued a statement that any info was greatly appreciated.
For several months these announcements were made while more posters were made and distribute further out of the city. The King never made any public appearance but left it to his assistant to do it all. His people believed what they were told that the King was grieving for his wife and child and did not to be seen as uncaring, so they were told he was looking privately. Most believed this but not all for many have known that the King hated his son and wished him gone.
While this was all going on the King took a leave of absent from his duties to bury his wife and child in an isolate plot overlooking the lake. Before leaving the cemetery, he told the head gatekeeper to leave the graves alone and not to touch them. He then took another two weeks off to get his grief under control before going back to his duties. Two years after the abduction the King remarried a woman in her early thirties. She worked in the children's ward of the orphanage as a nurse. Their marriage was held at the Holy Heart Church with Father Benito performing the ceremony. Everyone in the palace seamed to forget about the Prince as Jamal never once mentioned him after that day two years ago. Soon the kingdom seamed to forget along with him. But not all forgot as some had a promise to keep.
This missing child case had been opened for eight years with no info or sighting of him. The board of directors and Chief Wincott had to make a decision to close the case or leave it open. It was decided to close the case and put the box in the unsolved section of storage which was referred to as the cold case section. The only one who vetoed this was Wincott. Yet it was Chief Wincott who was given the task of getting the King to sign off on the papers to properly close it.
Parking in front of the palace he walked towards the door where the security guard let him enter. The guards escorted him to a sitting room where they were having their afternoon coffee. It happens to be the same room that was destroyed eight years ago. The King had the room completely alter from what it looked like before because it took the Chief awhile to realize it was the same room. Any sign of Val was gone.
“Afternoon Mark, coffee?” asked Jamal. “My wife Sera and I were enjoying some quiet time.”
“Coffee… thank you.” stuttered Mark taking the cup and sitting on the sofa.
“I'll leave you to attend to your business.” said Sera getting up to leave as the nanny brought the baby in.
“Son and a daughter?” questioned Mark “In all that time have you ever thought about your other son? It has been eight years since he was abducted, and now the board wants to close the case. We need your signature to official seal it off. I don’t know if you care but with all the info that was collected, we believe the boy was taken out of the country.”
“Close the case. That boy means nothing to me. Give me the papers.”
“Good god! Jamal, that boy is your son and rightful heir to the throne.” shouted Mark.
“No, my son died with his mother in the hospital. That boy means nothing to me for I had his name erased from all of the records.” Jamal coldly replied. “It is over just close the case.” with that he signed the papers then left for his office.
Chief Wincott sat in the sofa for a few minutes more with a stunned look on his face. Finishing his coffee, he got up to leave just as Sera came into the room.
“Chief Wincott, can you spare a few more minutes for I need you to explain something to me.” said Sera.
“Sure, but it is Mark.” Mark reluctantly spoke. “What did you want me to explain?”
Refilling his cup she asked, “I would like to know about the missing boy or the lost prince case?”
“Hasn't Jamal told you anything.” Mark sarcastically replied sipping the coffee.
“He refuses to say anything.” said Sera holding a small box. “Please I really need to know. I came across a box of pictures in the storage room. The pictures were of this boy and his mother.”
“The boy's name is Val. He was Jamal's first son and heir to the throne. At the time of his birth, it was a difficult birth, and his wife was badly torn up. By waiting for awhile they hoped everything would heal but it was not meant to be. From the start of their second pregnancy there was nothing, but problems and he blamed his son for everything.” said Mark. “You can say in a way he turned against the boy. Even from birth you might say.”
“Thank you for telling me. Do you think the boy is still alive?” asked Sera. “The box of photos I'll get for you because I'm afraid that Jamal would only burn them.”
“Yes. I think he is still alive some where.” said Mark taking the box from her. “I'll put these items in with the other ones.”
“Do you think he would claim his rightful place?”
“Doubt it. I have a feeling that he would never claim it because I don't think the boy wants anything to do with his father after the way he treated him.”
After an hour she walked him to the door and thanked him for everything. On the way back to the precinct he made a pit stop at the cemetery. Walking along the path to Lira's grave he felt so tired, worthless and thinking about retiring. Looking at the headstone he saw that Jamal has not taken care of it, so he pulled the weeds away and cleaned up around the grave.
“Lira, I have done all I can to get Jamal to see what has happened to his family. I'm sorry to tell you that his hatred for the boy has only gotten worse.” said Mark. “The prince of this country is gone for good, but the boy is still alive somewhere. Wherever you are son, I can only hope that you are happy and loved.” looking out over the rows of headstones.
When he arrived back at the precinct Chief Wincott went to the cold case storage unit and retrieved the lost prince box. Opening it up he saw a few pictures of the nanny and him as well as his mother, the toys he played with and his books. At the bottom of the box was the necklace that was given to him at the time of his birth. Taking the photos out of the box that Sera gave him he added them to the other box. Taking a sheet of paper the Chief wrote this down just in case the boy did come home. The note said this:
My name is Chief Wincott. I was head of the investigation on this case for over eight years. With no new info coming in the board of directors decided to close the case. Val – two years after your abduction your father married a nurse, Sera. Two years after the wedding she had a boy and named him Nathan after her father. When Nathan was four, they had a little girl and named her Fleur. I wrote this note so you would know the truth. Your father has removed your name from all of the records including his first wife too. He now considers his second family as his only family for this I'm truly sorry.
He signed it before putting the note in the box he closed it up and put it back on the shelf then went to his office.
