“I like you, Nova.”
Lucas opened his eyes and gasped as if he were out of breath. Everything that has happened keeps flashing back.
“I shouldn’t have said that,” he muttered. “I shouldn’t have, not in this situation.” he let out a sigh and closed his eyes.
He remembered again what happened the night Nova came back from the forest. While she was escorted by Solari to her hut, out of curiosity, he entered the deep forest. Just like what happened to Nova, he just went in a circle, but not until he saw a strange light on the right of the forest. Lucas followed the strange light and saw a group of people in black clothing circling a massive well, led by Clay. He was seen standing on a floating platform that serves as the cover of the well.
“Let’s begin,” Clay uttered.
The people around them started to raise and open their hands as light traveled from their palms through their fingertips. The light formed into a bubble that was the size of a teardrop. In a blink of an eye, the moment the bubble popped, people started falling to the ground. They could hear them gasping for air, while the others remained standing while whimpering in pain.
Clay lifted his hand. As light emerged from the well’s engraving, the bubbles floated around the place.
“What are they doing?” he mumbled. Scared, he stepped back, but a person caught his attention, Kai, staring at him. Panicked, Lucas mustered up his strength and ran away. He managed to go back to his hut and close the doors and windows. He remembered Nova.
“W-we need to get out of here.” He dashes out to the door, and as he opens it, Kai appears.
“Why do you look so scared?” she calmly asked.
“Y-you people! What are you? E-earlier? What was that?” he panickedly asked.
“Ugh, children are supposed to be the best tourists in Luminary. Well, to be fair, you're not a real child anyway, so why am I shocked?” Kai uttered.
“Children? Why? What are you going to do with us? And what do you mean I’m not a real child, huh?” he asked continuously. Kai completely entered the hut and closed the door, which made Lucas raise his guard.
“So that little push to the spring didn’t help, huh?” Lucas can’t believe what he heard. All this time, Nova was right.
“That was intentional?” Kai looked at him unbelievably.
“Are you dense? Isn’t it obvious? No sane person would push a person off a cliff, Lucas,” she stated. “Nova might be right; he is stupid,” she muttered.
“This is murder, Kai –” she scoffed after hearing those phrases.
“How much?” He looked at her puzzled. “The spring is supposed to trigger your memories, Lucas; how much of it do you remember about?” he froze.
“The balcony... you remembered,” she said.
“H-how do you know about it? And what memories? Those are not my memories.”
“They’re yours,” she confirmed. “After seeing us, you want to go to Nova and attempt to get out of here, right?” As she predicted, he reacted. "Well, as Clay said, there is no way out here for her, but you might have the chance. Do you want to know the truth?”
He ended up following her again in the deep forest. As they walked by, he kept his guard up, and Kai noticed it.
“I won’t try to kill you, Lucas; that’s nonsense.” she stated.
“Just a precaution,” he stated. “Anyway, I meant to ask this but who’s memories do I keep seeing? I don’t remember being in a boat or something,” he asked but Kai’s mouth remained shut. The path they took became familiar to him. They’re going to the well. He stopped. Kai sensed it and looked back.
“What?” she asked.
“Why are we going here? You’re bringing me to Clay?! You said you were going to help me –”
“I am helping you, Lucas! I am!” she yelled. “And I wouldn’t bring you to him; Clay should be the last person to know this.” she said and continued walking. Hearing those words from her kept him from following her.
“There will be no one around this hour except for Nadine, but I doubt she’ll be here.” she said.
“Why her?”
“She’s an exception; Clay adores her,” she said. “And we’re here.” They stopped in front of the massive open well. Lucas now gets to see it closer.
“Where are the bubbles? Those ones floating earlier?” he curiously asked.
“No more questions Lucas, I have to work tonight, so you wanna know the truth or not?”
“Y-yes, yes I do, but how?” Kai went closer to him and which startled him, he kept his guard up again but Kai just grabbed his right wrist and they slowly walked towards the well. She touched the cover of the well and it slowly floated revealing the glistening water of the well and a couple of bubbles floating in the water. She dipped his right hand into the water and let go of it.
“Now swirl your hand counter clockwise Lucas, three times.” Kai instructed. Not knowing the purpose of this but curiosity gets the best out of him.
“One… Two… Three…” Lucas collapsed but his hands were still in the water. Kai just watched him and let out a sigh.
“I really want to help you Lucas, I hope you will help yourself too.” she uttered and sat beside him, waiting.
In his consciousness, memories of him the moment he was born up until the age twelve appears but what shocked him was the new found memories of him. He opened his eyes and a tear dropped.
“W-what… T-that was me?” He looks to his left and sees Kai sitting beside him. “Am I really dead?”
“That was all you Lucas, the well don’t lie.” she informed Lucas. “But you’re not yet dead. your consciousness is with us. Unless you follow the light, then you're officially dead.”
“The light?”
“The light, the one who acts as the sun and moon here, the one Axl is guarding, that’s the light Lucas.”
“Then how will I get out of here, Kai?”
“In your case, just don’t follow the light,” she said. Lucas jolted up and walked.
“A-another thing, was Nova... was it Nova who jumped off? Is it really her?” his voice became shaky after recalling these memories. Kai silenced. “It really was her,” he burst into tears. Despite her attitude towards him in their life together and even after they meet on the island, he sincerely cares for her. Even though she misinterprets it as pity, he makes efforts to reach out to her.
“Where are you going?” Kai asked.
“To Nova, I will tell her,” Lucas said, recalling the words she uttered, his legs weaken and fall to the ground. “She said she’ll be happy, Kai. She said she’ll be happy if she’s dead. It’s better not to tell her, Kai, but I’ll stay with her.”
“Lucas, no! You need to get out of here. You still want to live, right? Her and your case were diff –”
"Kai, I don’t understand what you're saying about my case or anything nonsense it is but this is final,” he said, looking her in the eyes. “Please, don’t tell her about this. I want to fulfill her wish... and be with her.”
