Despite being skeptical about everything, Nova says yes to Nadine’s offer. She wants to know the truth.
“So... what now?” Nova asked. The two of them are still in the hut, sitting. Nadine walked towards her and laid herself on the bed.
“We can’t do it now. It’s nighttime. They will be in the forest up until dawn. We need to do it tomorrow morning,” she explained.
“Why?” Nova asked. Nadine sat up and looked at her.
“The well. Everything is in there. The truth? You can see it there. Clay said that for souls like us, the well will let you see the thing your heart desires,” she explained and flops herself on the bed again. “At least that’s what he said to me. I like to see my mom, so the well works fine for me, but I don’t know about your situation. You don’t have any recollection. The painting should be a clue, but you don’t remember anything about it either.” Nova’s attention diverted to the painting again.
“What is it about it again?” she asked.
“Your happiest memories, Nova. Does that look happy to you?” Nadine said and also looked at the painting. “Seeing that you don’t even know what that is, it seems you have forgotten memories.”
“You really know a lot,” Nova said as she lay on the bed.
“Of course, it’s now my second time here, plus I just asked Clay if I wanted to know something, so I know a lot.”
“Now speaking of him, why don’t you ask him about my situation?” Nova suggested.
“For some reason, I feel like he won’t answer me this time,” Nadine said, closing her eyes. “Tomorrow is going to be a long day, Nova. We should rest.”
When the morning comes, now is the perfect time to execute their plan. Few people have been coming out of the forest. Minutes later, Nova decided to come out of hiding and walked towards the forest, but Nadine stopped her and pulled her into hiding in the big rock.
“What? You said the answer is in their right. Let’s go now,” Nova said.
“But Clay hadn’t come out yet. He’s always the last person to come out of the —.”
“Nadine?” The two froze as they heard Clay’s voice. Panic ensues between the two, but Nadine hurriedly calms down and faces Nova.
“Nova,” she called, shaking Nova. “Remember, dip your hands in the well and swirl it three times, counterclockwise, okay?” she firmly whispered.
“Huh? What you –” but before she finished asking, Nadine went out the big rock and faced Clay.
“Clay?” Nadine called.
“You're here again,” he said. “You planned to see your mom?”
“Nope, I’m waiting for you. Are you busy? Let’s play with Axl, Clay,” she cheerfully said to get his attention. “Let’s go, let’s go,” she said, pulling him away. She glanced at Nova, who was still hiding in the rock. She just smiled at her mouthed good luck.
“Nadine, I have some work to do,” he complained.
“I know, but it’s just going to be quick; let’s just say hi.”
The coast is now clear. Nova went into the forest and walked. It is still the same magical, glistening forest. She walked to the same path as she saw the well. For not long, she finally found it. She slowly walked towards the well and watched her reflection in the clear water.
“Dip the hands,” she recited, feeling the cold water of the well, “and swirl three times, counterclockwise.” She slowly swirled. “1… 2…”
“Nova?” she asked, looking at the owner of the voice. It’s Kai. “What do you think you're doing?!” She runs towards her but it’s too late.
“3.” Nova fell unconscious.
“Nova! Wake up!” She called, but to no effect. She should’ve known. There’s only one person she could think of who tells Nova about the well. Kai rested Nova’s head on the well and ran off to find Lucas. She can’t believe it, knowing that he wants to keep it a secret from her, but he still ended up telling her. As she ran, Kai finally saw him on the shore, looking at the light.
“Lucas!” she called. He looked in her direction, confused as to why she looked aggravated. “What did you just do?!” she yelled.
“What did I do?” he asked.
“You said you wanted to keep it a secret, and now you tell her about the well?! Are you serious?” Hearing it made Lucas even more confused.
“What do you mean? I haven’t even met Nova today. What happened to her?” he asked.
“You mean it’s not you? Then who did?” she uttered.
“What do you mean it’s not me? Answer me, Kai. What happened to her?” Lucas desperately asked.
“She’s... in the forest, in the well. She’s currently inside her memories,” Kai slowly said. After hearing it, Lucas ran towards the forest, and Kai followed. He can’t let Nova know the truth. It’s going to hurt her even more. Her life is what she despises. Lucas was relieved to see her being truly happy and smiling when he never saw it for so many years being together, but now it’s impossible to keep it a secret. She is already under the spell of the well.
“Is it really not you who told her?” Kai asked again.
“Why would I tell her about the well when I could just say it to her? If ever she knows the truth, at least it’s from me, not from a magical well,” he said.
“Then who? Don’t tell me she just happened to know how the well works perfectly? Without anyone's help?”
“How about Solari?” he suggested.
“He doesn’t even know the other functions of the well except for receiving the bubbles. He barely paid attention to the orientation. He’s just dozing off.” Kai explained and remembered the time when the two of them officially became angels. “I’m sure it’s not Clay then.”
“It’s Nadine.” Kai slowed down and processed the words he said.
“What? For what reason?”
“I don’t know, but I think it’s her. Of all the souls here in Luminary, it’s just me and Nadine who know about the well, unless some angels disclose it.” Kai ruled out the possibilities of other angels disclosing it. Angels are aloof in cases like Nova. They are fine at disclosing the function of the well to other souls, but not to a soul like Nova. She is needed in Luminary.
“Then what will you do when she learns the truth?” Kai said while looking at Nova’s back, who was standing near the well. She looked at Lucas, who was also staring at Nova’s back.
“Honestly...” Nova turned around, and then their eyes met. It was Nova. Her eyes were deeply swollen from crying. She finally knows everything. He saw her expression of guilt, but he just smiled at her. “I don’t know, but I'll be there for her,” he said, running towards her and hugging her.
“Lucas,” she cried. Nova deepened the hug and cried her heart out.
“It’s fine, Nova. Everything is fine.”
