Their situation just resembles their wedding day, Nova drinking wine and Lucas pouring her empty glass with wine. It itches him to ask a question but can’t bring it to himself as he is looking for the right timing. Nova glanced at him and noticed it.
“If you want to say something, say it,” she said, then drank the wine.
“Why?... why are you acting like this, Nova?” he started, and she feigned ignorance. “Ever since Luna was born, you’ve been... cold. I'm confused. I thought we’re...”
“We’re fine, Lucas. You’re just thinking too much.”
“No, we need to talk about this. You want me to say something, right? This! This treatment. I don’t get it. All these years I’ve been understanding you because I love you, Nova, but you? You said you love me too, but this is not how you treat the person you love, Nova!”
“Love? Who are you kidding? I just said those words by mistake, Lucas.”
“Then you’re saying Luna is a mistake, Nova?” She let out an annoyed sigh after hearing it.
“This is childish. You don’t love me. That’s impossible.” She stood up, grabbed him by the wrist, and shoved him out the door. “Go out and wrap up the party. I’m going to bed.” She closed the door, but he stopped it.
“Then all these years, you’re doubting my feelings for you, Nova? Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you? I’m sorry, just please.” He tried to embrace her, but she resisted.
In the middle of his begging, the voices of people can be heard as they are walking in the hallway. Lucas forced himself into the room and closed the door. Nova was still trying to push him out, but he controlled her by hugging her tight.
“You should’ve confessed back then, Karina. You and Lucas would’ve been a great couple,” a guest said.
“Can you tone down your voice? People might hear it,” Karina said.
“You know what life Lucas had. What I’m just saying is... Lucas would finally have a happy life if he married you. Do you want to see him miserable forever? You should’ve seen his face earlier.” He can finally feel Nova’s stopped resisting. It turned into a little sob.
“Just go, Lucas. Get out,” she said softly. Lucas remained in his place and lifted Nova’s face. He wiped her tears and looked into each other's eyes. She saw it again—those loving expressions in his eyes. Nova doubts if she deserves to be looked at or not. Just like what she heard, all she does to Lucas is make his life miserable. She treated him like that because, after all, she believes he’ll go back to someone he truly loves, and it is not her.
Every day, she pushes him harder away from her life, but she doesn't get it. Why won’t he let go? Why does he keep holding her hands when he had a chance to, embracing her every night, and smiling at her despite all her attitude?
She felt the warmth of his lips. He hoped she would realize. “I am the happiest when I’m with you, Nova. You’re the woman I love the most, Nova Anderson.” The sincerity of his face says it all. The more she stares at it, the more she might give in.
She thought of the wall she had built around herself. Will she willingly break it and be selfish? Is it really being selfish? If he really loves her, then she also wants to love him freely. But what if that time comes? What if he realizes she’s really not that one? Heavy thoughts were still lingering inside her, but as she stared at his face, she'd try to trust him.
She pulled him and pressed her lips against him. Lucas smiled as he deepened the kiss and pulled her close. A tear dropped from his eyes. The heavy feelings in his chest lightened, and he finally got the answer. He’ll never let her go.
Their lips parted and they caught their breath. She leaned on his chest and gently wrapped her arms around him. “I’m sorry Lucas, for the years... it’s just...”
“It’s fine, just tell me when you're ready, just take a rest,” Lucas said. He carried Nova and put her to bed. Just as he was about to leave, Nova held his hand to stop him.
“My dad wants Mom dead,” she started. “I heard it, then she really died. She died in misery while my dad was spending time with Isabella, the girl he loves. I don’t want Luna to experience what I went through. We might not be together, but at least I’m here, alive... for Luna. That's why I pushed you away. I want you to go find the woman you want to spend your life with.” Nova felt a heavy thing lift off her chest. She finally told him, and Lucas now knows the reason why she is constantly pushing him away.
“This will not do,” he said, and he laid beside Nova.
“What are you doing? What about the party?”
“They can manage. I’m sure your family will take care of Luna. They’ve been dying to spend some time with her,” he said, hugging her. “Nova, look me in the eyes and listen to me. I love you, I really do. You’re the woman I want to spend my life with, you and Luna. Do you feel the same way?” she looked at him and smiled.
"Yes, I do. I love you too, Lucas. I really do, and I want to spend my life with you, with Luna.” They both chuckled and embraced each other tighter.
“No backsies, Nova. You said it now. Look forward to more of me. I can finally do things with you, like sharing one bed. It’s been what? 7 years? I miss snuggling you like this. It’s been cold for the past winters, Nova.”
“I know, and I’m sorry. I let those feelings ruin us,” she said. “If I had told you earlier, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”
“Nova, the important thing is we're okay now. We finally talked about it.”
“Right, the most important thing now is us.”
Nova woke up from sleep. A warm arm was still wrapped around her. She looked up and saw his face. She can’t believe this man loves her. She decided to get some fresh air. She slowly got out of bed and went to the balcony. A strong sea breeze greeted her. Nova looked at the dark sky when she heard two people talking. She looked to her right, but no one was on the balcony beside their room. But then she looked below, and there she saw them. It was her dad and Isabella, embracing one another and slowly dancing with the wind.
“I love you,” his father uttered. Isabella smiled and kissed him. A tear dropped in Nova’s eyes.
“That should be mom. It should be her, not Isabella.” She ran inside but then saw Lucas sleeping. Nova covered her mouth to prevent her sobs from escaping, but it still doesn’t stop her from crying heavily. She sat on the floor and reminisced about the memories of her mom and how she was hurt because of her dad. Nova thought of Luna. She imagined how it will hurt her if she finds out that his father doesn't love her mother. She's sure it’ll be her death if Lucas finds another woman. Nova doesn’t want her daughter to witness her death.
Nova’s thoughts are being clouded. She looked at Lucas, stood up, and walked closer to him. Her cries became more heavy as she got closer. She imagined possible scenarios—the cries, the feelings, the future—their future.
“I don’t want it,” she says, slowly shaking her head. “I don’t want to feel it. I don’t want to see it. I want it to stop. Please stop,” she cried. She hit her head with her hands multiple times trying to stop thinking. It became stronger overtime, so did her cries and her voice. And now she’s looking at the glass separating her from the dark sky and the sea. She opened the door and was once again greeted by the strong breeze.
“It’s so peaceful. I want it.”
