Lucas wiped Nova’s tears that had escaped from her eyes. She’s peacefully closing her eyes beside him, leaning on his shoulder. He couldn't stand the look of her crying. Pain was visible in her while she was telling him what she saw that night. He’s disappointed. He thought everything was alright on that night, that they would start over.
“You need to talk to him,” he uttered.
“I can’t,” she said. “How did you do it, forgiving your father? ”
“I didn’t forgive him. He didn't deserve it. But I decided to let myself be free from it. My mother wants me to live my life to the best, so why would I make my world revolve around him? I suppose your mom wants it for you too. That might be the reason why she didn’t tell you anything.”
"Then, I will not make my world revolve around him either. I will not be fazed anymore.”
“You still need to talk to him. Tell him everything you felt.”
“I already told him the day he told me about our marriage, but he didn’t care about my feelings. Should I just accept it? I’m still hung up on the little hope that at least he truly cared about us, but I guess there’s nothing I can do. I need to let go of it. I’m sorry that I did it. I know it’s unforgivable, but I want to spend my life with you, with Luna.” He held her hand and hugged her.
Lucas sighed, “After all of this, when we go back, we will go back.”
“Uhm, sorry to burst your happy bubble, but you can’t do that, I mean at least for Nova’s case.” Kai interrupted and went down from a tree.
“What do you mean? ”He asked.
“You know, Nova took her life, so she’s unredeemable. Have you witnessed someone who committed that thing go back to life? ”She asked. “Oh, there’s lots of it,” she mumbled. "Anyway, my point is,”
"No, you said something,” Lucas said, but Kai quickly denied.
“You said there’s lots of it,” Nova said, and Kai gave up and rolled her eyes.
“This kind of case like yours is a headache and a joy to us here angels in Luminary. The stunt you pulled where one wants to end their life and the other one saves another person's life, but they are putting themselves at risk too. Though if things went south like yours, you’ll end up here in Luminary, we need to file Lucas’ name in the higher-ups because his name is not on the well, which is another work, but we won’t have that paperwork if you decided to go back to the living by not following the light, which I highly suggest, and at the same time, we’ll gain another member, which is also great ‘cause it means we’ll have a lesser work because of a new member where in your case it’s you, Nova. Taking your own life is a huge violation of nature. That’s why you’ll end up here with us.”
They became quiet after hearing it. Nova feels she has lost her chance to fix everything in her life.
“Is there really no way for Nova to go back? ”He asked, hoping. Kai avoided his gaze. Guilt lingers around her, but she pulls herself up and bravely shakes her head. Then it’s final. Nova can’t go back.
Nova and Lucas sat together, looking at the sun, which slowly lost its light. She was leaning on her shoulders, holding each other's hand.
“You know what the first thing I thought when Kai brought me to the well was to bring my memory back? You look cuter in person.” Nova just smiled and held his hand tightly. “Kai also said that we, here in Luminary, will go back to the time where our misery started. Seeing you in your 12-year-old self makes me sad. You must’ve been lonely after your mom passed.”
“Talk about yourself. You're also 12 years old. But, your mother was still alive back then.”
“Well, yes, but that was the time we moved to my father’s house. It’s not just me who became miserable. My mother also. I blamed them for what happened to her. If they hadn't treated her badly, she'd still be with me.”
Nova expressed her regrets for the decision she made in the past. Lucas was still forgiving and comforting her around. They talked about the things they wanted to do, but the reality made them realize that it’s impossible anymore. They only had days before the 28th, and all they can do is spend time with each other, hoping for a miracle for the time to stop.
“Hey guys,” Nadine interfered and went in the middle of them. "Oh, hey Nova, shall I spend the night in your hut? You know... to talk about some things?”
“So it really is you who told her about the well,” Lucas said. Nadine’s eyes widened, and she looked at them side to side.
“You told him? ”She asked, but Nova explained everything. “So you guys are old now? And had a daughter? ”The two nodded. Nadine expressed her amazement at it.
“How about you? How old are you? ”Nova asked.
“8,” she answered. Nova was speechless after learning it. She even talked about her case to a child. Nadine is just nonchalant about it, and she looked at the bright side, and at least she knows something new about Luminary. “If you ask me, you should still come back with us, Nova. Luna will be sad if she knows this. It’s impossible that there’s nothing we can’t do.”
“But Kai said there’s nothing. I’m stuck here. Soon, I’ll be like them, wearing some black clothes, guiding souls for the rest of my life.”
“That’s what Kai said. Let’s ask Clay! ”Nadine suggested.
“What’s the difference? ”Lucas asked.
"Well, Clay is the one leading all of them. He sure knows something. You have me. I’m sure I can convince him.”
It became a line of hope for them. They ran towards his office just to find no one. Nadine finds it strange as he is just always in his office filling out some work. It’s not also midnight, where angels do their duties. They were hunting him down by asking around but failed. They decided to wait for him until midnight came. The way through the forest was slowly packed with angels walking towards the inside of it. Nadine stood up because, in no time, Clay would arrive. Nova was about to stand up when she felt a familiar feeling. She’s strangely sleepy. She looked beside her and found Lucas sleeping soundly, leaning on the big rock where they were hiding. Nadine noticed the quietness of the two, and then she found them collapsed in one another. She tried to wake them up, but to no effect, as if they were under some strange spell. She saw Clay walking towards the forest, so she shook them harder, but they still hadn’t woken up. She decided to leave them and ran towards him. Clay knows then his steps became wider and faster, making it for Nadine to have a hard time chasing him. Suddenly, he heard a falling sound in the sand; it was Nadine that was tripped over by her own feet. She may not have felt hurt, but she hopes he’ll come for her.
She saw a person stop in front of her. She looked up and saw Clay’s cold expression. He got on his knee and assisted her to stand. She was about to speak but was interrupted by him.
“I won’t answer your question, Nadine,” he said. She just went quiet and observed him.
“We could’ve avoided this situation if you controlled me, so why? ”She asked. He did not respond and continued brushing the sand out of her hair. “You helped me back then, Clay. How about them? ”
“They brought this to themselves. It’s not my business.”
“This is my second time here in Luminary, and now I know the difference between me and Nova’s case. If I go back and then purposely not drink my medication, does it still count as taking my own life, Clay? ”
