"Lord Shijin…My lord….Master!" Baku yelled as he ran after the god who was now demoted to a minor god making his way back to his own domain with what little time he had left with it.
"What is it?" He called back lazily.
"Have you really been demoted? How can that be?!" Baku yelled.
"You are the most powerful god in the spiritual realm. How could the head strip you of your power?"
Arriving at his palace, Shijin slumped down at his desk running his hands through his long obsidian hair. A loud sigh came out of his mouth as he stared at the bewildered Baku who looked like he would explode if he didn't get an answer right away.
He couldn't help but scoff. You would think he was the one who got demoted with the way he was acting right now.
"…I got demoted because I helped a human." He said.
Baku looked at him with a confused expression on his face. "Master, the head would not demote you for helping a human. If anything, should you not be rewarded for this?"
"Haha, yes normally that would be the case but I am afraid it is not that simple."
"How so?"
"I saved a human who was destined to die." He shrugged.
Baku's complexion paled as he looked at his master with a look of sheer horror. Shijin couldn't help but chuckle seeing the funny expression his face had contorted to.
"M-Master this is no laughing matter! It is no wonder he demoted you! How could you do such a thing?"
Shijin thought about it but couldn't come up with an answer himself. "I do not know." Was all he said.
Baku looked stunned. "You do not know? I am afraid this servant does not understand."
"I do not understand either. Anyway what is done is done. There is nothing I can do about it." He said.
"How can you be so carefree right now? Becoming a minor god means you no longer have full control over your domain. You will also be unable to perform your duties as the god of death. Someone is going to have to take over for you Master!"
"That is fine. Osiris, Hades or even Hel can take charge. I am certain the head will figure it out."
"But—"
"Enough Baku. We will discuss this topic no more. I wish to be left alone now." He said his voice stern, carrying a hint of coldness.
Baku flinched when hearing this tone. He knew very well that his master was in a bad mood and didn't want to be disturbed.
"Y-Yes I understand Lord Shijin. I shall take my leave then." He said before scurrying away.
Shijin watched Baku leave in a hurry and wondered why he was acting like he was being chased. Now that he was alone, Shijin could now have the time to process what had just happened. He couldn't believe the situation he was in right now. Never once did he think he'd make such a rash and impulsive decision. The human he had saved had no connection to him whatsoever.
Not once had he met the human before. Yet for some reason he felt compelled to save her. Perhaps out of pity or boredom or maybe even curiosity. He wanted to know what would happen if he changed that woman's destiny. He didn't think about the consequences of his actions at the time when usually that would be the first thing he thought about.
Shijin had been the death god for over a millennia. His inception came to be from the moment the concept of death came to be. Actually it would make more sense to refer to himself as death itself. He was a strong and powerful god who had never once failed nor neglected his duties, in fact, he quite enjoyed his job. But at some point, his life started to become tedious and dull.
Humans started to die too quickly either by killing each other off, not taking care of themselves properly or by taking their own lives before it was their time. No one respected death nor bothered to understand him. He was either forgotten or ignored and at some point he even started to question his own purpose. Why was he here and why was he doing all of this for people who didn't appreciate him but instead chose to fear him.
He thought maybe he could get his answers by saving that woman but unfortunately he was left feeling more confused and now without a job. Shijin decided at that moment that he would no longer involve himself with humans. They weren't worth the trouble.
For over a millennium, Shijin has been the god of death, understanding the vital role he plays but growing disillusioned with its lack of appreciation. In a moment of reckless compassion, he saves a woman destined to die and faces severe consequences. Stripped of his divine powers and demoted to a mere miner god, Shijin retreats to Earth, seeking solace in a bar where he leaves behind a significant artifact—his ring. This ring, representing the essence of his soul, holds the power to form a profound link with anyone who possesses it.
Noa, a 25-year-old woman haunted by the loss of her family, fears death more than anything. Her life changes drastically when she finds the ring at the bar and learns it belongs to the very entity she dreads. The ring binds Noa and Shijin together, forging a connection that ties their fates until her final breath.
As they navigate their unexpected bond, Noa and Shijin must confront their deepest fears and grapple with their intertwined destinies. In this journey, they face the challenge of overcoming their fears and discovering the power of love amidst the shadow of death.
Will their connection lead to acceptance and understanding, or will it unravel under the weight of their greatest fears?
