Shijin had returned back to the spiritual realm after his failed attempt at a night out. He was even more annoyed than before and wanted nothing more than to be alone.
Luckily for him, he had a subordinate who was sensible and good at reading the air so Baku left him alone for the majority of the time. Since he was now a minor god he didn't have a lot of work to do but still had to handle the menial task of assorting the souls that had been brought in.
As he sat on his desk and continued to sort through the thousands of names before him, Shijin felt like there was something he had forgotten but he couldn't put his finger on what it was. The oppressive pressure he always felt whenever he did anything was no longer there and he felt lighter. As he sat back on his chair wondering why he was feeling this way, he suddenly felt a pulling sensation in his chest causing him to keel over in pain.
"What in the world is going on?" He managed to scream out through the groans of pain.
He suddenly got a very bad feeling as he frantically searched through his belongings trying to find his Ring of Life but it was nowhere to be found. He realized someone had found his ring and put it on, and he was now being summoned and by the looks of things, his destination would be in the human realm.
Shijin's experience of being summoned back to Earth was like a relentless tugging at the very core of his being. It felt as though a powerful force was trying to wrench his soul from its tranquil resting place, pulling him with an unyielding grip that left him feeling both disoriented and vulnerable. The sensation was raw and unsettling, akin to a deep ache that emanated from the very heart of his existence. It was a strange and foreign feeling, one he hadn't experienced before but was slightly familiar with.
As the tugging subsided, he found himself enveloped in a swirling cloud of black smoke. When the smoke cleared, he saw a woman standing before him. She had brown skin that glowed in the light of night, and her long, curly brown hair framed a face marked by bewilderment and fear. The woman's hazel eyes seemed to convey a multitude of unspoken questions as they locked onto him. Shijin's assumptions had been confirmed at that moment. He really had been summoned to earth with the help of his life ring.
His gaze was drawn to the woman's hand, where the missing ring glinted with an eerie familiarity. Panic surged within him, but he managed to mask his rising fear with a façade of cold detachment. He approached the woman, his voice calm but distant, and asked, "Where did you find that ring on your finger?"
The woman's mouth was agape as she stared at him not even realizing that he had spoken to her.
"The ring, where did you find it?!" He asked again, his patience wearing thin.
Noa snapped out of her stupor, her eyes blinking as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing.
"U-Uh I-I found it at the bar. It was on the floor…shiny… so I picked it up." She managed to say.
Shijin's eyes narrowed as he observed the woman who struggled to form a coherent sentence. He sighed at her bewildered expression, realizing it was futile to take out his frustration on someone so clearly out of their depth. It was his mistake for losing the ring, but he couldn't help feeling a bit aggrieved.
"Normally, if you find a ring, would you not report it? Why did you put it on? Now, because of this oversight, I am stuck here."
Shijin rubbed his face in exasperation.
"Listen carefully, the ring that is currently in your possession belongs to me. It is referred to as the Ring of Life and contains my soul. By putting it on, you have essentially bonded with me. Do you understand?" he asked.
Noa stared at him, clearly confused.
"What does that mean?"
Shijin looked at her as if he were dealing with a child.
"It means we are connected. When you wear the Ring of Life, the god whose soul it holds becomes linked to you. Essentially, I cannot leave until you die."
"U-Until I die?"
"Yes."
"So?"
"We are bound together until you die," he clarified.
"Until I… I see." Noa struggled to process this insane situation, feeling as though she was missing something crucial.
The realization hit her.
"What exactly are you?"
Shijin regarded her as if she should already know.
"Is it not obvious? I am a god!"
"A god? Wait, what?!" she exclaimed.
Shijin sighed inwardly, frustrated by her slow comprehension.
"I am the god of death human. Accept it already."
The sooner she did, the sooner he could go about living his life. Oh wait, he couldn't just live his life the way he used to anymore.
"D-Did you just say death?"
"Yes death, are you also hard of hearing?"
Noa's skin turned pale as fear took over her face. No longer being able to handle the shock, she fainted.
Shijin hurriedly caught her before she plummeted to the ground as he wondered what he had said to make her react this way.
"Human," He called out, shaking her.
"Oi, human! Wake up, you cannot just go around fainting on people like this."
No matter how many times he shook her or called out to her, Noa didn't wake up. She remained unconscious and there wasn't much he could do.
Searching through her bag, Shijin found her wallet and was able to find her address. Deciding to travel through the shadows, he arrived at her apartment and let himself into her home using her keys.
He carefully lay her down on the couch as he looked around the place wondering what he was going to do from now on.
For over a millennium, Shijin has been the god of death, understanding the vital role he plays but growing disillusioned with its lack of appreciation. In a moment of reckless compassion, he saves a woman destined to die and faces severe consequences. Stripped of his divine powers and demoted to a mere miner god, Shijin retreats to Earth, seeking solace in a bar where he leaves behind a significant artifact—his ring. This ring, representing the essence of his soul, holds the power to form a profound link with anyone who possesses it.
Noa, a 25-year-old woman haunted by the loss of her family, fears death more than anything. Her life changes drastically when she finds the ring at the bar and learns it belongs to the very entity she dreads. The ring binds Noa and Shijin together, forging a connection that ties their fates until her final breath.
As they navigate their unexpected bond, Noa and Shijin must confront their deepest fears and grapple with their intertwined destinies. In this journey, they face the challenge of overcoming their fears and discovering the power of love amidst the shadow of death.
Will their connection lead to acceptance and understanding, or will it unravel under the weight of their greatest fears?
