The Girl, the God, & the Ring

The god of death goes missing.

The god of death goes missing.

Sep 03, 2024

Baku had been a subordinate of his master for nearly five centuries. Although he was relatively new at his job, he had become accustomed to his Master's rather eccentric behavior.

He worked on his own time and schedule, doing things as he wished and no one complained because he did his job perfectly. Now that he had been demoted, lord Shijin had a lot more time on his hands and his mood began to sour.

Baku was a smart and sensible person so he knew when it was time to leave him alone. He did his best to give his master some space but when he realized that there was almost zero activity coming from his domain, Baku started to grow worried.

He couldn't bring his worries to anyone for fear that his master might get into more trouble so he decided he'd wait things out for a couple more days and if there was still nothing, he'd do a little investigating of his own.

Baku ran his fingers through his short white hair as he sighed out loud.

"Well I have some work to do so I'll leave him be." He said before leaving.

Several days later…

"Has master left his domain or something?! Why have I not heard from him?"

Baku couldn't wait any longer so he made the decision to enter Shijin's domain even without his permission.

Since Baku was his exclusive subordinate, he had access to everything that belonged to the god of death and that also meant the keys to his domain.

Baku carefully unlocked the door and took a  peek inside but there was no one in sight.

The vortex of lost souls that was usually left open while Shijin worked was closed and the machine that sorted out the list of souls wasn't in progress either. That meant that his master had been gone for a  long time.

Panic took over his body as he wondered where he could've gone. His master never left his domain empty for more than three days and yet by the looks of things, he had been gone for at least a  week.

"Where have you gone Lord Shijin?" He wailed miserably.

If Shijin didn't return to his post soon, the head would find out about his absence and he'd be punished even more.

Baku made the decision to find his master right away. Taking out the celestial tracker, he found an item that belonged to his master and infused his power into the ball. After a few seconds, Baku was able to see where he was. Since he didn't have anything that was currently on his person, the location wasn't very accurate, but he knew he was somewhere on earth.

"Looks like I am going to have to bring him back." He said before teleporting out of there.

Meanwhile back on earth….

Noa had just taken a shower and was now looking a lot better compared to before.

She decided to make herself a quick breakfast which consisted of a  fried egg laid on top of a bed of rice. She used some sesame oil for taste and garnished the dish with some green onions. This was usually her go-to meal when she was on the go and it tasted delicious.

Noa was conscientious enough to make a second bowl for her new roomate.

"Do gods eat human food?" She asked only after she had finished making the meal.

"Normally no we do not but we can if we want to." He said while eyeing the food.

Though the dish was simple, it looked and smelled delicious so the god of death wasn't opposed to trying it.

Surely enough the rice was tasty and paired well with the crispy yet runny egg.

The both of them enjoyed their meal while talking about Noa's plans for the day.

"I have some errands to run so you'll probably have to come with me right?" She asked.

"Yes, for the time being we cannot be more than a meter apart." He sighed.

Noa chose to ignore his sigh and continued. "Then you'll need to change." She said, looking him up and down.

Shijin looked down at his clothes and then proceeded to look at her purposefully feigning ignorance. "What is wrong with what I am wearing?"

"Are you serious? You can't go walking around town looking like that!" She exclaimed.

"You'll draw too much attention."

Shijin rolled his eyes at her overreaction before snapping his fingers. Instantly, Shijin's appearance changed and instead of his traditional garb he opted for a more casual attire and his long black hair that went to his knees went to his shoulders. His gold eyes also changed color and now looked like a normal shade of black.

Though he had lost some of his extravagance, he still looked incredibly handsome and Noa couldn't help but stare.

"Better?" He asked.

"Y-Yes better."

"Well then, let's get going."

They then went around town completing the various tasks Noa needed to get done. The more crowded the place was, the more Shijin stood out, making Noa, who was someone who didn't like to draw attention, uncomfortable.

"Ugh, can't you make yourself look more normal?" Noa asked, the discomfort clear on her face.

"What do you mean normal? This is my human appearance. How much more do you want me to change?"

"I don't know..make yourself look less flashy…less handsome?"

"Less handsome? But this is my face. It's not my fault my beauty is such a distraction." He argued.

Noa rolled her eyes at his arrogance but couldn't argue with him. He was indeed handsome and the fact that she couldn't retort made her angry.

This couldn't continue. She didn't want people staring at her so she dragged Shijin to a little clothing shop, picked a plain cap, black sunglasses and a mask and made him wear it.

"There," She said as she stepped back, admiring her work.

"Now you won't stand out so much." She smiled.

Shijin scrunched up his face in displeasure but didn't take anything off. He noticed that with this he was getting less stares and people didn't try to approach him as much.

I guess this human is good for something. He thought.

Going to the last spot on Noa's list, the two stood in front of a drugstore where Noa bought Shijin basic essentials like toothbrushes, undergarments, socks and the like.

"Since you'll be living with me now, you'll need your own things." She explained.

"I guess.." Shijin replied back as he eyed the various items in her cart.

He then looked around the store and came across an aisle that caught his interest.

"They sell alcohol here?!" He exclaimed in amazement.

Noa who had followed closely behind him looked around while nodding her head.
"Well, most drugstores sell pretty much everything."

"I see. Why don't we buy a couple of bottles then?" He said as he looked around the selection in front of him, his eyes carrying an excited glint.

Noa watched him with amusement as he stared at the bottles in wonderment like a child in a candy store. She couldn't help but find him adorable.

Wait..adorable? Him? No way.

Noa shook her head as Shijin put four bottles of win in her cart.

"By the way, I noticed you speak a lot more casually now. Is it because you're in your human form?" She asked him curiously.

"How observant of you. Yes when I'm in my human form, it's not just the way I look that changes but the way I speak too."

"Enough about that, let's get wasted tonight!"
