SHAI : THE INFINITE PATH

Chapter 17: Descent into the Abyss

Chapter 17: Descent into the Abyss

Sep 05, 2024

The fall felt endless.

Shai’s heart raced as they plunged into the dark void, the world around him spinning into chaos. His hand reached out instinctively, grasping nothing but air as the ground below disappeared. The weightlessness was disorienting, and for a moment, everything blurred—his thoughts, his sense of direction, even the pulse of the Orb of Lumina in his grip.

"Shai!" Aya’s voice echoed faintly through the darkness, a distant sound amidst the rush of wind and shadow.

Shai forced his eyes open. Shapes and flashes of light darted around him—memories, fragments of the past, swirling in the abyss. It was as if the forest itself had torn open, exposing the raw heart of creation and chaos beneath.

But just as the sensation became overwhelming, the fall slowed, and the darkness began to thin. Shai’s feet touched solid ground, his knees buckling slightly from the impact. The eerie silence returned, broken only by the sound of his own breathing.

Aya and Kael landed beside him, equally shaken but alert, their weapons drawn as they scanned their surroundings. The darkness here wasn’t complete; a faint, ghostly glow illuminated the place, casting everything in an otherworldly light.

They stood in what seemed to be a cavern, though the walls pulsed like living tissue. Glowing veins of light ran through the walls and floor, creating an unsettling atmosphere. The air was thick with tension, and the oppressive presence of the place gnawed at their nerves.

Kael was the first to speak, his voice low and cautious. "Where are we? What is this place?"

Shai scanned the cavern, the Orb of Lumina still clutched tightly in his hand. It pulsed faintly, reacting to the energy in the air, but the comforting light it usually emitted was weaker now, dimmer.

Aya’s eyes narrowed, her grip tightening on her sword. "We’re not in the forest anymore. This… feels wrong. It’s like the boundary between realms is distorted here."

Shai nodded. "This must be what the Guardian warned us about. We’re somewhere between the worlds—between reality and memory."

A chill ran down his spine as he realized what that meant. They were in a place where the past and present converged, where the boundaries of time and space no longer held meaning. And yet, something else lurked in this place—something ancient and malevolent.

As if in response to Shai’s thoughts, a low rumble shook the ground, and the glowing veins along the walls pulsed more intensely. The air vibrated with a dark energy, and a voice—deep, resonant, and filled with malice—echoed through the cavern.

"You have come far, Shai, but your journey ends here. You cannot outrun the darkness. It has been waiting for you, watching you."

Shai’s blood ran cold. The voice was the same one they had heard before, but now it felt closer, more tangible. He could feel its presence all around them, pressing in from the shadows.

Aya raised her sword, her eyes scanning the dark corners of the cavern. "Show yourself!"

The voice chuckled, a sound that reverberated through the air like a twisted melody. "Brave, but foolish. You seek the truth, but the truth will consume you. Just as it consumed the others."

Shai clenched his fists, his mind racing. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The voice grew darker, more sinister. "I am what remains of the past. I am the shadow that haunts these worlds, the force that broke them apart. And now, I shall consume you as well."

Before Shai could react, the walls of the cavern began to shift, the pulsing veins of light dimming as tendrils of shadow stretched out from the darkness. The air grew colder, and the ground trembled beneath their feet.

"We need to move!" Kael shouted, his eyes wide with fear.

Shai didn’t need to be told twice. He grabbed Aya’s arm and ran, the three of them dashing deeper into the cavern as the shadows closed in around them. The tendrils of darkness lashed out, trying to ensnare them, but Shai could feel the Orb of Lumina reacting to the threat, its faint glow growing stronger with each step.

"This way!" Aya pointed toward a narrow passage ahead, the only visible exit from the collapsing cavern.

They sprinted toward it, the shadows nipping at their heels. Shai’s heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline surging through his veins as they narrowly avoided being swallowed by the encroaching darkness. He could hear the voice laughing behind them, mocking their efforts to escape.

But just as they reached the passage, something shifted in the air. The oppressive presence of the shadows receded slightly, and the ground beneath them stopped shaking.

Shai skidded to a halt, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "What… just happened?"

Aya and Kael stopped beside him, equally winded but alert. Aya’s eyes were sharp as she scanned the tunnel ahead. "I don’t know, but it feels like the danger has passed—for now."

Kael wiped sweat from his brow, glancing back at the cavern they had just escaped. "That thing… whatever it is, it’s toying with us."

Shai nodded, his grip tightening on the Orb. "We can’t stop now. We have to find a way out of this place, before the shadows catch up to us again."

They pressed on, the narrow passage winding deeper into the unknown. The further they went, the more the walls around them began to change. The pulsing veins of light reappeared, but they were dimmer now, flickering like dying embers. Strange symbols appeared along the walls, etched into the stone—symbols that seemed familiar to Shai, though he couldn’t place why.

As they walked, Shai’s mind raced. The voice, the shadows… everything about this place felt wrong, twisted. And yet, it also felt like he was meant to be here, like this was part of his journey.

"What do you think that thing was?" Kael asked, his voice hushed.

Shai shook his head. "I don’t know. But whatever it is, it’s connected to the Sundering. It’s the same force that caused the worlds to break apart."

Aya’s eyes narrowed. "If that’s true, then we’re in more danger than we thought. That thing wants to finish what it started—and it sees us as part of the problem."

Before Shai could respond, the passage ahead opened up into a vast chamber, and they found themselves standing before an ancient altar, covered in dust and cobwebs. The air here was thick with an overwhelming sense of power, and the symbols on the walls glowed faintly in the dim light.

At the center of the altar, a small, intricately carved stone lay half-buried in the dust. Shai approached cautiously, his heart pounding. The Orb of Lumina reacted, its glow intensifying as he neared the stone.

"This is it," Shai whispered. "This is what we’ve been looking for."

Aya stepped forward, her eyes widening in realization. "That stone… it’s a key. A key to unlocking the truth."

Kael looked at them both, confused. "What do you mean? What does it unlock?"

Shai reached out, his fingers brushing against the surface of the stone. The moment he touched it, a surge of energy coursed through him, and the chamber around them began to shake violently.

Before they could react, the ground split open beneath them, and the chamber was engulfed in light.
