The Boyfriend Shirt

Sam-Jae Lee
"What Snapchat post?"

"Oh please don't act like you were not cackling to yourself last Friday night." Teddy laughed, "I thought you were going mad with the way you were cackling."

"First, I don't cackle, how dare you!" I said, "You would have been enjoying yourself too if you saw what I saw. Turns out the prince really does have some skeletons in his closet."

Teddy rolled his eyes..

Skeletons I can actually use to my advantage

I watched as His Majesty shifted in his throne and with a scowl on his face he tapped furiously on his phone. I opened our Snapchat chat and an involuntary smile danced on my lips when I watched his Bitmoji pop up within the chat. The prince was thinking about me. That thought caused an unexplainable flutter to rise in my chest. It was there for a brief second before it disappeared. I tapped my screen and sent him a message to put him out of his misery.

BY99: Waiting for someone? You know I would never stand up, someone as fine as you.

William's head wiped up and I quickly averted my eyes to look up at a grinning Teddy. "It's not what you think," I tried to justify.

Teddy shrugged, leaning forward and placing his face into his cupped palm as he leaned his elbows onto the table, "You know ... Sam." Teddy grinned, "There is nothing wrong with having a boyfriend."

"Come on Teddy, you know..."

Teddy rolled his eyes and grinned like a fool, "I know, I know you don't do boyfriends. But if you are going to have a crush on the guy..."

"I don't have a crush on him!" I said a little too loudly.

Teddy's eyes shined with amusement as he stared past my shoulder. I steeled myself realising that my outburst might have caught his majesty's attention. I expectly moved my phone under the table so His Majesty wouldn't see me texting, lest I blow my own cover.

I stared at his reply and fought the smile that fought its way onto my face.

Will'os: You are stalking me?

BY99: Of course babe. How can I not when I know what you look like now.

Teddy's mmm sounded distant as I read the new reply.

Willo's: You clearly already knew what I looked like before.

BY99: yes but, I didn't know how you would look in my bed.

I grinned as I pressed send on the message. I heard a loud clunk from behind me and I turned to see William fumble with his phone as it slipped out of his fingers. He picked it up and looked around the bar.

His eyes met mine and whatever impassive look he had turned to ice as a scowl appeared on his face. The look sent an uncertain jolt into my body and the jarring contrast of the look on his face and the texts I was receiving hit me like a bucket of cold water.

Of course I was not good enough for his pompous highness. I already knew that. I looked up at Teddy and before he could say whatever was clearly on the tip of his tongue, a bubbly short hispanic girl in a black dress and a short wavy bob slid into the seat next him and said, "Sorry I am late. Statistics is a bitch and apparently so is The dinosaur. I think his wife is leaving him. He was extra sour today."

"You taking statistics?" I asked, shaking my head, "Teddy didn't you warn her?"

Teddy rolled his eyes and shrugged.

"Hi, I am Sam,"I said, holding out my hand. She shook my hand and smiled, "See if I was your friend I would have told you never to take any class that's taught by the dinosaur."

Teddy scoffed, "I didn't need to tell her. So many people warned her but she said and I quote, ‘He is in love with the librarian and they are cute together.’ "

"Wren," she said to me. She had the mind to look sheepish but the look in her eyes said she didn't regret it one bit. She looked at Teddy and grinned, "I was right wasn't I?"

"You took this course just to watch the dinosaur's love story unfold?" I wondered why I hadn't ordered a drink yet. I glanced at the bar contemplating how rude it would be to ask Wren to come with me to the bar.

"I will get it," Teddy said, eyeing me sceptically, "I don't want you putting your moves on our bartender. We like this place."

Wren looked between Teddy and I. Teddy shook his head softly and she continued her story. I guess I had no right getting jealous over Teddy having secret signals with other friends but it didn't stop the weird feeling that fizzled in my chest.

"... I love love. " Wren finished and I realised belatedly I had missed her explanation. She shrugged, frowned and continued, "Of course when I signed up for the class I didn't know how much the dinosaur could be swayed by his feelings and now that his whirlwind romance is coming to an end his mood has been getting increasingly sour."

Teddy barely managed to place our drinks on the table and I watched as Wren sipped on hers without question. The weird feeling fizzed through my ribcage again because Teddy knew this girl well enough to know what she wanted to drink without asking her.

I watched as she leaned into Teddy smiling and he rolled his eyes pushing her away with remnants of fondness in his eyes. If I didn't know better I would think they had been friends forever but they hadn't. I was Teddy's longest friend. The sound of my name pulled me back to the conversation on the table.

"...and Sam." Teddy smirked.

I sat upright sipping on my drink that looked too familiar to the one Teddy had In Front of him. But there was no way Teddy drank whiskey he wasn't that type of guy. His eyes met mine and he laughed at Whatever Wren had said.

I narrowed my eyes trying to focus on the conversation again. It wasn't Teddy's fault I had left for years. He was allowed to change, make new friends and be comfortable around other people I guess. That realisation stung and I sipped on my drink again. This time to wash away the sour taste in my mouth.

" ... have a crush on Hartley?" Wren laughed.

"Who has what now?" I asked, feeling not nearly buzzed enough for any new revelations.

"You obviously," Teddy looked at me like I had lost my head.

Wren leaned forward in her seat and smiled at me, "Do you get butterflies in your stomach when you see him?"

"No, because that's pronounced anxiety."

"Does your heart beat faster when he is near you?" She continued undeterred by my previous answer.

"No, because that's also another health condition and it's a pronounced panic attack."

Wren laughed and turned to Teddy with glee, "Oh I see what you mean."

"What?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"You are obviously so deep in love you don't even realise it," the two said.

"I am what?" I felt my cheeks heat up.

Wren smirked and Teddy echoed her smirk with a grin.

"I don't do falling in love ok. And even if I did, His Houghty Majesty, Prince William Hartley the douche would be last on my list of prospects," I stood up from my seat and spun round planning to leave the table but instead my drink ended up on the one person I would have liked to avoid.

None other than His Conceited self, His Majesty the prince of fucking Portmornt.

Fuck.
