It was quick to get used to, if I’m to be honest. There was no way not to be anxious about the new changes in your life, but it made everything so much more interesting and fun. My excitement for the first day at university barely let me get any sleep.
Never say the phrase "What could be worse than just not getting enough sleep?" Believe me, something always happens that’s worse. I learned this from personal experience. Unfortunately:
- I overslept.
- Almost missed my ride to the university.
- Managed to injure myself running to avoid being late for the first lecture.
- And of course, got lost.
What fault did I have? The building was enormous! I had to ask security to direct me to the classroom I should have entered ten minutes ago. Fortunately, the lecturer was one of those who thought like this: "If you don’t bother anyone, then you don’t bother me." In translation: "Make a little noise, and you're in trouble. Why? Because I didn’t get enough sleep and need to take it out on all of you."
"Hello, sorry I’m late, I—" Before I could finish, I was interrupted by the man whose name I didn’t know yet.
"Who are you?" he asked, and I cleared my throat.
"Keith Hyun, sir." I forced a fake smile, and the man nodded his head and turned to the rest of the class.
"Thanks to Mr. Hyun, you lost 2 minutes of the lecture. Less material, worse for you, better for me." The man smiled, gesturing for me to enter.
"I hope you're satisfied, Mr. Hyun. Find a seat and settle in. I hope this is the last time you present yourself like this," he said, and as he spoke, I had already scanned the place where I would spend the rest of my life.
I dashed to my seat without saying anything more, ignoring the stares. What a jerk. Another addition to the list:
- Did I manage to oversleep? ✓
- Did I ALMOST miss my ride to the university? ✓
- Did I manage to injure myself while running through the university corridors? ✓
- Did I get lost? ✓
- Did I end up with the "most wonderful" lecturer every student dreams of? ✓
- My day started just great. What should I expect for the rest of it?
Lectures went on one after another, breaks coming and going in seconds. It was a bit strange; everyone stared at you, and you dared not talk to anyone. Just as I had fallen into the theory of "You won’t make even one friend," she appeared. Just like clockwork.
Her lashes long and naturally curved, her lips pink as freshly bloomed cherry blossoms. Locking my gaze with hers for just two seconds, I already knew she was different.
"Hi, I’m Kim Sana, but you can just call me 'Sana,'" she said, her voice predictably beautiful. She herself was, there was no need for anyone to say it.
"I’m Keith, nice to meet you." I extended my hand, which was quickly taken by the girl sitting next to me.
"Nice to meet you too, Keith. By the way, don’t pay him any mind. He’s always been a pain in the ass," she added, and it took me a few seconds to realize who she was talking about.
"Your name... You're not Korean, right?" She asked.
"Yes, my mother is from Texas, and my father is from Daegu."I replied with a half-smile''
"That's great," She said with a huge smile on her face..
She's the first person who didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. The first person I could call a "Friend." Sana was the first part of the book whose story was yet to be told. Its cover was made of cherry wood, which described her so well, every detail painted carefully with ink.
If she didn’t exist, the continuation of my story would have been concluded a long time ago. The continuation, which unfortunately was delayed by a whole two months. But don’t be disappointed, because it did happen after all. Slowly but surely, right?
