Trouble Brews

Trouble Brews

Sep 21, 2024

The days rolled by quickly as we delved into our magic training. The palace, once an overwhelming labyrinth of luxury, began to feel like a familiar, if eccentric, home. Sabrina's excitement about the magic was uncontainable, Jeanna’s casual confidence remained unshaken, and I was somewhere in between, grappling with the reality of our situation.

One afternoon, while Sabrina was busy charming the palace’s extensive library with her newfound magical prowess, and Jeanna was honing her skills with a practice staff in the courtyard, I found myself in the palace gardens. The gardens were a stunning contrast to the rest of the palace’s grandeur: lush, vibrant, and bursting with exotic plants that I’d only seen in fantasy novels.

As I wandered among the blooming flowers and winding paths, I was approached by Eryndor, who looked more relaxed than usual, but there was a glimmer of concern in his eyes.

“Ah, Alice,” he said, catching up with me. “I was hoping to find you.”

“Hey, Prince Eryndor,” I greeted, trying to sound casual despite the flutter of nerves in my stomach. “What’s up?”

He motioned for me to walk with him. “I wanted to discuss the progress of your training. Eloida has informed me that you’re finding the control aspects a bit challenging.”

I nodded, feeling a twinge of embarrassment. “Yeah, I’m getting there, but it’s slow going. Magic’s a lot more complicated than I thought.”

Eryndor smiled reassuringly. “Magic, like many things, takes time. And patience. You’re doing well; it’s just a matter of practice.”

We continued strolling through the gardens, the sounds of Sabrina’s enthusiastic spells and Jeanna’s laughter drifting in the distance. Eryndor stopped beside a particularly large and vibrant bush, its flowers glowing softly.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” he said, his tone turning serious. “There have been disturbing reports of increased shadow beast activity, and not just in the outskirts. The beasts seem to be targeting key areas within Lunaris. We believe there might be a deeper connection between the attacks and your arrival.”

“Wait,” I said, frowning. “So, you’re saying the shadow beasts are after us?”

“It’s a possibility,” Eryndor admitted. “Your presence here seems to have triggered a chain of events. We need to understand why and how to counteract it.”

I sighed. “Fantastic. As if learning magic wasn’t stressful enough.”

Eryndor placed a hand on my shoulder, his expression softening. “I know this is a lot to handle. But you’re not alone in this. The kingdom needs your help, and I believe you have the potential to make a difference.”

“Thanks,” I said, appreciating his support. “I guess we’ll have to step up our game then.”

Eryndor nodded. “Exactly. I’d like you to meet with my advisor, Lord Finnian, who’s been coordinating the defense efforts. He might have more information on the recent disturbances.”

“Sure thing,” I replied, though I couldn’t help but feel a knot of anxiety tighten in my stomach. “We’ll meet with him soon.”

As Eryndor and I parted ways, I headed back to the training area where Sabrina and Jeanna were still absorbed in their practice. Sabrina was trying to make flowers bloom with a wave of her hand, while Jeanna was busy testing different stances with her staff.

“Hey, you guys,” I called out as I approached. “We’ve got some new info. Eryndor thinks the shadow beasts might be targeting us. And we need to meet with his advisor, Lord Finnian.”

Sabrina’s face lit up with a mix of excitement and concern. “Really? That sounds intense. Do you think we’ll get to fight more beasts?”

Jeanna, pausing in her practice, raised an eyebrow. “Or maybe we’ll get some answers. Either way, we should be ready for anything.”

I nodded. “Yeah, we should probably step up our training. If we’re being targeted, we need to be prepared.”

Sabrina immediately jumped into action, her enthusiasm bubbling over. “I’ll practice my spells more intensely! Maybe I can turn those shadow beasts into butterflies!”

Jeanna grinned, twirling her staff. “And I’ll work on my combat skills. Bring it on, shadow beasts. I’m ready.”

With renewed determination, we threw ourselves into our training with even more vigor. Every day, the challenges of this new world seemed to grow more complex, but so did our resolve to face them head-on.

Later that day, we made our way to Lord Finnian’s chambers, our nerves mixed with anticipation. Lord Finnian was an elderly man with a sharp mind and a no-nonsense attitude. His chambers were filled with maps, scrolls, and an assortment of magical artifacts, giving the impression of a well-organized chaos.

“Welcome,” Lord Finnian greeted us, his gaze keen and appraising. “Eryndor has spoken highly of your progress. I hope you’re ready for what lies ahead.”

“We’re ready,” I said, trying to sound confident. “What do you have for us?”

Lord Finnian spread out a map of Lunaris on a large table, pointing to several locations marked with red ink. “These are the areas that have seen the most recent attacks. We believe the shadow beasts are being drawn to these places by some unknown force.”

I studied the map closely. “Do we have any idea what might be causing this?”

“Not yet,” Finnian replied. “But we’re investigating several leads. For now, we need to fortify these areas and ensure the safety of the people.”

Sabrina nodded vigorously. “We’ll help however we can.”

Jeanna leaned over the map, her expression thoughtful. “If we’re going to face these beasts, we need to be prepared for anything. What’s our next step?”

Lord Finnian considered for a moment. “Your training will continue, but I suggest you start familiarizing yourselves with the regions under threat. Understanding the terrain and the people will help you in your efforts.”

We left Finnian’s chambers with a clear mission: get to know the affected areas and strengthen our magical skills. As we prepared for the challenges ahead, one thing became clear—this adventure was far from over. But with each step, we were learning more about ourselves and the world around us, ready to face whatever came next.

A mission! DUN DUN DUN... I would love to see some shadow beasts get turned into butterflies, but I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever they *actually* get turned into (ashes perhaps?) just as much. And I think I underestimated just how much I wanted to see colloquial speech patterns in a fantasy world--"what's up?" to a prince is so funny to me for some reason

Three chaotic Filo friends—Sabrina, Jeanna, and Alice—get isekai’d during a hike up a mysterious mountain. Bookworms to the core, they’re obsessed with fiction... just not the educational kind. Sabrina devours historical romance fantasies, especially the ones with brooding northern dukes; Jeanna prefers steamy adult romances; and Alice lives for gritty, blood-soaked action in dungeon-crawling tales.

Now, in a plot twist straight out of their wildest imaginations, they’re thrown into a fantasy world that’s even crazier than the books they love. What could possibly go wrong? With their unique brand of chaos, they’re about to find out.

PS: This novel has been buried in my docs a long time ago. Just trying to enter the tournament for fun buuut unfortunately our country is not eligible so yeah, just enjoy the story and we may all find a hunky partner or friends on the way xD
