The following morning, Sabrina, Jeanna, and I were buzzing with a mix of excitement and apprehension. After a hearty breakfast and a brief but intense magical training session with the prince’s advisor, we set out to explore the rest of the palace grounds.
As we wandered through the ornate corridors, Sabrina couldn’t stop chattering about the magical potential she was convinced she had. Jeanna, meanwhile, was more interested in the various weapons and artifacts that adorned the palace’s display cases. I, on the other hand, was trying to piece together what little we knew about this world and its dangers.
“Did you see the way that spellcaster handled that enchantment?” Sabrina was practically glowing. “I think I’m going to be a magical prodigy! Just imagine the possibilities!”
Jeanna grinned, twirling a small dagger she had “borrowed” from a display. “As long as we don’t get ourselves killed by our own spells, I’m all for it.”
I rolled my eyes. “Let’s focus on figuring out what’s really going on here. The prince mentioned that the shadow beasts were getting more aggressive. We need to understand why.”
As we rounded a corner, we stumbled upon a large, heavily guarded door. It looked out of place among the palace’s more decorative architecture, and the two soldiers stationed outside it seemed unusually tense.
Sabrina’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. “What do you think is behind that door?”
Before I could answer, a familiar figure approached us: the prince's advisor, Elandor, who had been overseeing our magical training.
“Ah, I see you’ve found the archives,” Elandor said, his voice as smooth as ever. “This is where we keep records of all magical occurrences and important events.”
“Really?” Sabrina’s eyes widened. “Do you think we can find some information on how to control our magic better?”
Elandor nodded. “Indeed. The archives contain extensive records on magical theory, artifacts, and past events that might be relevant to your situation.”
Jeanna’s face lit up. “And do they have any cool weapons or combat spells?”
Elandor smiled faintly. “Perhaps. The archives are comprehensive, though not all sections are open to the public. If you’re interested, I can escort you inside.”
We followed Elandor through the heavy door and into a vast room filled with towering bookshelves and ancient scrolls. The air was thick with the scent of old parchment and a faint trace of incense.
“This place is amazing,” Sabrina murmured, running her fingers over the spines of ancient tomes. “It’s like stepping into a fantasy novel.”
I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement myself. If there was any place where we could find answers, it would be here.
Elandor led us to a large table stacked with open books and scrolls. “Feel free to explore, but be cautious. Some of these texts are extremely delicate.”
Jeanna wasted no time diving into a book on magical beasts while Sabrina eagerly started reading a scroll on elemental magic. I opted for a more methodical approach, scanning through a compendium of magical phenomena for any clues about shadow beasts.
Hours passed as we absorbed information, and the quiet hum of Elandor’s reading provided a calming backdrop to our research.
“Hey, I found something!” Sabrina called out, her voice echoing in the silent room. She waved a scroll excitedly.
“It’s about a ritual that could potentially amplify magical abilities. Maybe it could help us with our control issues.”
I walked over, peering at the scroll. “That sounds promising. But we need to be careful. Messing with rituals could have unintended consequences.”
Jeanna looked up from her book, her eyes narrowed in thought. “What if the ritual is linked to the shadow beasts? We might find a clue about their increased aggression.”
Elandor, who had been quietly observing us, nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a good point. Many magical phenomena are interconnected. If the ritual could potentially influence the shadow beasts, it’s worth investigating further.”
Sabrina’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Let’s do it! We can study the ritual and see if it’s something we can use to help.”
I sighed but nodded in agreement. “Alright. But let’s proceed with caution. We don’t want to end up making things worse.”
Elandor agreed to provide us with additional resources and guidance as we delved into the ritual. With renewed determination, we began preparing ourselves for whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the palace grounds, we felt a sense of purpose. This world was filled with mysteries and dangers, but we were ready to face them head-on.
Little did we know, our search for answers would lead us to uncovering not only the secrets of the shadow beasts but also the hidden truths about ourselves.
