Moving into a new city was a chore. There were so many things to consider. Finding a place to live, getting a job, filling in details, and in some cases, hiding your tracks. But that wasn't the case for the players. They already had a set of missions to fulfill. The system would naturally tell them which place they had to be at.
However, it was still a chore for Ryuu, who was introduced to his main task a few days ago.
When the system dumped information on him that day, it wasn't that he was shocked. He already knew what his character was meant to do.
In this carefree world, there was only one being every creature feared without an exception. Kyros. The overlord of this godless world. He didn't give a damn about what happened to the world but if he ever lost his temper, that could easily be the doomsday.
That was where this character, Aoi, came in. The story was that Scarlet Eye wished to eliminate the lord to free the world from him. But the actual meaning of it was to keep the lord entertained (be it with assassination attempts) so he wouldn't snap. Boredom could also end the world, huh?
Ryuu knew this would come up at one point, so he wasn't surprised. But what he couldn't accept was the last six months being a tutorial. The amount of people he wiped out couldn't be counted with all his fingers combined and then some. Just one mission was enough for a tutorial, he had cleared more than ten missions. How was that a tutorial?
The system didn't bother answering his questions and just told him to get prepared for the next mission.
So, he had to leave the town he had been living in and move to a separate location. He guessed that was how it was going to be in the future and he'd be wandering about the continent.
The inn he booked was average. The interior was up-to-date but not too extravagant. Wooden stairs led upstairs. It wasn't too busy during the day. The innkeeper was a man in his 50s, but he wasn't here during the day, instead, a young boy showed the visitors around.
Ryuu had been here for a day. It was a small town with mostly travelers. He roamed around until the evening thinking if there was any plothole that could save his life.
He didn't loathe the overlord. The guy's been sitting in his castle for who knows how long and this place didn't even have wi-fi. The people of the continent feared him to death for valid reasons. He was technically a prisoner of the system. Of course, he was bored.
He did pity the guy, but like, wasn't there any safer way to do the job? Assassinate him? The strongest being in the continent? He'd be dead on his first try. How was he supposed to do it periodically if he died on sight?
System: [Would you like to proceed with mission cancellation?]
'Really? S-'
System: [Penalty: Destruction of the world.]
'Just say no then!'
As he was cussing the system out, a black figure bumped into him. He muttered a sorry and left like a ghost. Ryuu was quite used to this ordeal. The last few days were so uneventful, that he was starting to plan an evasion. Though all the plans were utterly useless.
When he got back to his room, he pulled out the envelope the black figure had slipped into his pocket.
A red envelope.
The color of the mission envelope signified difficulty, importance, and pay grade. Green meant general missions, and blue was for difficult missions and tasks commissioned by the high society.
Red was for royalty. The commissions given by royalty and alike were the hardest and highest paying. It was his first time receiving this since he came to this world. He guessed it was likely because those before were tutorial missions. In the future, it was likely that he'd only receive high-difficulty tasks.
Ryuu carefully opened the envelope.
"On the night the moon shines high on the sky, we hope to see your eyes paint the night."
He looked away from the paper with a shudder. If he hadn't gotten used to such antics, he might have mistaken this for a fan letter.
There were coordinates at the bottom of the letter. Who knew he'd be summoned with a royal-grade letter?
After the system had translated the coordinates—Ryuu's brain wasn't trained to solve assassin codes— he went to the location at midnight the next day.
As Ryuu leaned onto the cold stone wall with a red envelope in hand, he wondered what situation made the organization summon him in person. The envelope didn't say much or anything regarding the job at all.
[System: Acting sophisticated or cool does not increase an assassin's fame.]
'So what? I'm a farmer too! I'll be a cool farmer! Stop criticizing me!'
Sounds of footsteps came from the other side followed by a tapping which the system declared a secret code.
[System: Code verified. You may proceed.]
"Greetings." It was a solemn male voice.
"Why did you summon me all of a sudden? With a red envelope at that?" As mentioned, red envelopes were given out when royalty commissioned them. However, the royalty at this time barely had the time to eat and sleep properly, why would they hire assassins? For succession battles? They had to force their heirs onto the throne to begin with.
"A problem has arisen. The commission isn't for an assassination this time, it's for a rescue."
Hmm? "Did one of the heirs request for it?" It would make sense if that were the case. But since when did assassins rescue people? Didn't that contradict the job specifics?
"Such cases aren't passed down to someone of your caliber." So, there were such requests.
Ryuu pitied the royals as well, especially the younger generation. They couldn't dream of being the absolute rulers or whatever and instead functioned as an overworked management team of a large industry. This world truly was odd. Sometimes, he wondered if it was this oddness that drew so many people to obsess over KS. A world where you could see high-ranking people suffer under the system. Who knows?
"The commission is from an elder dragon in the south." Ryuu's thought process shut down upon hearing the last 5 words. "The original order was for the royal family and they contacted us." Go back a sentence. What did you just say?
"You said dragon right?" Ryuu's mind didn't process anything after the word dragon was mentioned. Dragons were famous creatures throughout every known fantasy media. And in every case, they were creatures with absolute power. They were mentioned in the game but never brought up in any mission.
The person ignored his question. "The first prince stole a dragon egg from the southern mountain. You are to retrieve it and safely return it within a month."
It was as if Ryuu was struck by lightning. "He stole what?"
This question was also ignored and a folder fell from the other side. "We have no one else to depend on as the situation stands, the royal family can't move from the capital and the royal knights aren't in the position to take action within a month." There was a pause. "The future of this kingdom is in your hands."
'Are you kidding me right now?' He didn't ask the question out loud as the other person had already left like a shadow. Couldn't you be a bit more cooperative?
System: [Mission Unlocked]
Ryuu directed his attention to the screen of doom.
System: [The kingdom's future has become uncertain because of a foolish mistake.]
Yeah, like what kind of idiot does something like this? Steal a dragon egg? Did he not have the will to live or did he want to take the whole kingdom down with him? 'If I can't rule like a god, what's the point of this kingdom's existence?' Was that what he planned?
System: [This is your chance to test your skills, earn merit, and save a kingdom.]
'Do I have to?'
Being an idiot wasn't a sin but this kind of idiot didn't deserve to live. Why did he have to risk his life for this type of idiocacy?
System: [Infilterate the southwestern castle where the first prince is currently at. You may find something new on your journey. Or you may find the roads to the afterlife.
Time left until the next checkpoint disappears: 1 day 15 hours 50 minutes.]
A while later…
At the sanctuary…
A group of twenty were right outside the door, preparing to charge in. The team consisted purely of people native to this world, not the players from Earth. So they were low on information, to begin with, otherwise, they wouldn't be here right now.
The door opened and half of the group entered the large room that looked like a throne room. At the end of the hall, a figure was sitting calmly on a throne. Eyes closed, clothes resembling something an ancient god would wear, and an expression that resembled a beautiful statue.
"Lord Kyros, we've come to put an end to you—" The world didn't reach a conclusion and the bodies faded into dust in a mere second. The ten or so people outside could only retreat with their hearts in their hands. They had picked the wrong time for this ordeal.
The lord continued to tap his fingers on the handrest, as if deep in thought. After a few minutes, the large gate finally closed and the lord of the land disappeared into thin air, leaving the sanctuary empty for the first time in many years.
At the same time, in a small town in the south, a black message window popped up in front of a sleeping assassin.
