Alex felt a wave of relief wash over him, though skepticism lingered. Right, because every predator says that right before the main course, he thought, wiggling nervously. 

Mortimer continued, "You see, I'm more of a tinkerer than a hunter. I prefer to create rather than consume. Besides, who would take me seriously as an inventor if I were known for snacking on my test subjects?" 

Alex couldn't help but snicker at the absurdity of the situation. Here he was, a worm, having a conversation with a mole who claimed to be an inventor. Well, at least I'm not the only one in a strange predicament, he mused. 

Mortimer gestured to the various contraptions surrounding them. "I promise, this vehicle will revolutionize underground travel! You could explore places you never dreamed of, dodge predators, and even find hidden treasures! What do you say?" 

Despite his initial fears, Alex felt a flicker of excitement. Well, at least it beats being bird food. Maybe teaming up with Mortimer wouldn't be so bad. After all, I need allies in this strange world, and who better than a quirky mole with a penchant for invention? Plus, I might just get a sweet ride out of it! 

"Alright, let's give this a shot," Alex thought, wiggling enthusiastically in what he hoped was a convincing display of eagerness. After all, it's not every day a worm gets offered a ride in an underground vehicle!
