The rain fell softly against the cobblestone streets of Lysander’s village, a rhythm that did little to calm the storm raging inside him. At fifteen, he felt like an outsider in his own life, trapped in the shadows of expectations, and constantly fighting to keep his head above the suffocating waves of judgment and whispered gossip. Every glance from his peers, every dismissive word from his family, only deepened the isolation he felt—a void that seemed to stretch endlessly.

The window in his small room overlooked the vast forest of Lykhaven, its towering trees swaying ominously in the wind. The name itself carried a weight of fear, a name only spoken of in hushed tones, as though the mere mention of it would invite the monsters hidden in the woods to come forth. But Lysander was no longer afraid of monsters—he was afraid of what lived inside him. The stories of dangerous creatures beyond the border were warnings for those who had something to lose, and for those who feared death.

But Lysander was not one of them.

"Why should I keep going?" he whispered into the cold air, his fingers tracing patterns against the frost-kissed glass. His reflection stared back at him, hollow and heavy with sadness. There was no answer. Only silence. Silence, and the crushing weight of despair that pressed down on his chest like an unseen force.

Each passing day was a battle. And Lysander was tired of losing.

The world outside, full of life, laughter, and possibilities, felt distant and unreachable to him. His family pushed him to fit the mold of a normal village boy, to smile when he didn’t want to, to laugh when his heart was heavy. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that he didn't belong.

He didn’t belong in his family. He didn’t belong in the village. He didn’t belong in this life.

His fingers curled into tight fists, his knuckles white against the glass. He took a breath, the air heavy with the scent of the coming storm.

I shouldn't be here, he thought, looking back toward the forest, the place he could escape to—a place where all his pain would end.

Lykhaven.

His feet moved on their own, pushing him from his chair, and propelling him toward the door. His heart pounded in his ears as he opened it quietly, slipping into the darkened village streets without a sound. The storm clouds above rumbled ominously, but he didn’t care. Nothing could stop him now. He wasn’t running from the storm; he was running toward it.

The towering silhouette of Lykhaven loomed ahead, the dense forest casting long shadows over the village’s outskirts. The villagers spoke of the forest with terror—of the beasts that lurked within. But Lysander’s mind was already made up. If there was something beyond those trees that could end this unbearable pain, he would welcome it.

Crossing the boundary into the forest felt like stepping into another world. The air was colder here, heavier, and filled with an almost palpable silence. Shadows danced between the trees, and every gust of wind carried the promise of something dangerous lurking just out of sight. But Lysander kept moving forward, his resolve unshaken.

This place was forbidden, but he didn't care about the rules anymore. He had no place in the world he left behind anyway. His only hope was that the stories were true—that some beast or creature would find him here, end him, and free him from the torment inside his heart.

Kael's POV

Kael’s chest heaved as he sprinted through the thick underbrush of Lykhaven. His limbs burned with an intensity he hadn’t expected, his body hot with the overwhelming sensations of his first heat. It had come on suddenly, like a fire igniting within him, a fire that was beyond his control.

He had trained for this moment—trained to master the animal instincts that every young werewolf experienced. But nothing had prepared him for the storm raging within his body. The hunger. The need. His senses were sharper than ever before, and the scent of prey carried on the wind like a tantalizing promise. Alone in the woods, he was supposed to find control.

But tonight, control was slipping away.

He inhaled deeply, catching the scent of something unfamiliar—human. His muscles tensed, his wolf rising closer to the surface with each passing second. Kael's vision blurred, his thoughts consumed by the primal drive to hunt, to chase, to claim. He could barely think beyond the need, his body reacting on instinct as he surged forward, his senses guiding him to the source of the scent.

Lysander’s POV

Lysander paused in a small clearing, his eyes tracing the path of the towering trees around him. The forest seemed endless, the shadows pressing in on all sides. He closed his eyes, breathing in the damp, earthy scent of the woods. He wanted to disappear, to fade away into nothing. Perhaps here, among the forgotten and the lost, he would finally find peace.

A sudden crack echoed through the trees, the sound of snapping branches pulling him from his thoughts. His heart jumped in his chest, eyes darting around the clearing. The forest had grown unnaturally still.

"Who’s there?" he called, his voice barely above a whisper.

There was no answer.

Lysander swallowed hard, his body tensing as the air around him seemed to thicken. His earlier resolve began to falter as a creeping sense of dread set in. Maybe the stories were true after all.

Suddenly, something barreled into him from the side, knocking the breath from his lungs. He hit the ground hard, the impact sending a shock of pain throughout his body. Sharp claws dug into his shoulders, pinning him to the forest floor. Before he could even cry out, teeth sank into his nape, hot and burning. A scream tore from his throat as blood poured from the wound, his vision going white with pain.

Kael’s wolf had taken over completely, the scent of blood driving him into a frenzy. His teeth tore into Lysander’s flesh, the taste of iron filling his mouth. Somewhere, deep in the back of his mind, Kael knew this was wrong—that this wasn’t what he was supposed to do. But he couldn’t stop.

Lysander’s body grew cold as the life drained out of him. Yet, in his final moments, he felt a strange warmth—a sense of relief. He couldn’t see his attacker clearly, but in his fading consciousness, he felt grateful. Maybe this creature was saving him from the endless torment he had endured. Maybe this was the escape he had longed for.

“Nir’vahl,” he whispered, the words floating softly from his lips—“with heartfelt breath” in the ancient tongue of the Lykhaven people. It was the one phrase he had clung to in solemn preparation for this moment. A genuine smile flickered across his face, a glimmer of relief and contentment shining in his eyes as the darkness enveloped him, finally offering the peace he had long sought.
