Chapter 14: Flames of Conflict

Sebeth and his group stared in silence at the faint blue glow in the night sky. The dimly lit flair, flickering against the deep canvas of the stars, seemed almost otherworldly. A signal of urgency that now beckoned them toward the inevitable clash. The cold air of pre-dawn whipped against their faces, filled with the faint smell of dew and smoke lingering from distant campfires. Sebeths sharp gaze never left the horizon.

“The time has come,” Sebeth said, breaking the silence. His voice, though calm, carried the weight of the moment. He glanced at his comrades, their eyes reflecting tension and determination, standing like shadows in the ghostly glow. The subtle light of dawn began to creep along the edges of the sky, the blue hue dissolving into streaks of orange and purple. “Let's head out,” he ordered.

Without hesitation, the group moved in unison, their steps quiet but purposeful, each aware there was no time to waste. The ground beneath them was cold and damp from the morning mist, crunching under their boots. As they ran, the world around them blurred—the tall grasses of the plains swayed under the rising wind, the scent of battle drawing closer with every breath.

Sebeths squad, numbering only five, crossed the terrain with haste, their figures barely visible in the low light. Time seemed to stretch and contract as they traversed the plains, the scenery shifting from open fields to the telltale signs of conflict—distant fires, the scent of burning wood, and the far-off cries of battle. The first signs of war were like whispers carried on the breeze.

Finally, they reached an impassable ridge overlooking the battlefield. Below, the main Crafter army was already engaged in fierce combat against the goblin forces. The goblins, numerous and disorganized, swarmed the plains. As the sun soared, their mysterious figures moved unpredictably, casting long shadows across the chaotic scene.

Sebeths eyes narrowed as he quickly assessed the situation. "Alaric, Thaddeus," he called out, his voice steady yet commanding, "I need wide-range spells hitting the enemy flanks and rear guard. Break their ranks."

Alaric Stormrider, the veteran mage with deep-set eyes and greying hair, nodded without hesitation. "Consider it done Commander." He raised his hands toward the heavens, his fingers crackling with raw energy. The air around him hummed and hissed as the atmosphere responded to his call.

“Thunderclap Tower!” Alaric bellowed, his voice resonating with power. The sky above darkened momentarily, a low rumble growing louder as he unleashed a massive ionized charge. The ground surrounding the goblin forces was illuminated by arcs of lightning, striking like a thousand electric spears. The goblins caught within the radius shrieked in terror as their bodies were zapped with lethal force, falling like broken dolls. The smell of ozone and burnt flesh permeated the battlefield.

On the other side, Sir Thaddeus Ironheart, his imposing figure stoic and unmoved, lifted his massive sword toward the earth. His deep voice echoed through the air, “Stone Reaver!” He slammed his blade into the ground, the earth quaking under the force of his magic. Sharp stone spikes erupted from the soil, impaling goblins left and right, splitting the world open in a violent display of raw elemental power.

The two Knight-commanders' coordinated assault was devastating. Goblins screamed as their ranks were shredded, morale quickly crumbling. The Crafter army, led by Lady Seraphina Dawnblade, saw the devastation unfold and rallied. Their war cries filled the air as they pushed forward, striking the weakened goblin flanks with renewed vigour.

Sebeth couldn’t help but smirk, though his tone remained sarcastic. “You had to go all out, didn’t you?” he muttered, watching as his comrades decimated the enemy.

Alaric grinned, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Far from it,” he replied, his voice dripping with confidence.

Thaddeus let out a low chuckle. “This is merely a warm-up.”

As the goblin ranks faltered, a path was cleared, allowing Sebeth’s squad to descend toward the heart of the battle. The sounds of clashing steel, the roars of soldiers, and the shrieks of dying goblins filled the air. Blood and smoke danced in the sunrise, painting a grim war picture.

When they reached Lady Seraphina Dawnblade, her armour gleamed in the rising sunlight, streaked with the blood of her enemies. Her sharp eyes locked onto Sebeth, a mixture of relief and urgency on her face. "Your plan seems to be working," she shouted over the din of battle.

“Looks like it,” Sebeth replied, his voice level despite the chaos around him.

"I'll take care of things here," she said, motioning towards the battlefield where the goblin ranks were faltering in their attempt to stay organized. "You must get to the designated location."

Sebeth nodded, his mind already focused on the next phase. But before he could move, the air around them thickened with tension. A sudden, ominous energy filled the battlefield—a stray spell of massive scale, dark and wild, hurtled through the sky like a meteor. It plunged into the epicentre of the conflict, erupting in a thunderous blast. The forces of crafters and goblins were thrown into chaos as the ground shook violently from the explosion's impact.

Sebeth and his group barely managed to avoid the brunt of the attack, diving for cover as debris and bodies flew through the air. He cursed under his breath, his ears ringing from the explosion. When the dust settled, he looked at the devastation, the battlefield torn apart. Casualties littered the field, though the goblin forces had suffered more. Yet, the damage to the Crafter side was enough to tip the scales.

“That attack...where did it come from?” Sebeth muttered, his eyes scanning the horizon.

As he stood up, Sebeth's attention shifted to the origin of the previous blue flare. His mind raced. That must be where the True threat lies. He tightened his grip on his sword, his knuckles turning white.

“I hope the scouting parties are doing all right,” Sebeth said, concern briefly flashing across his otherwise steely demeanour. Without waiting for a response, he led his squad forward, his pace quickening.

Earlier that night, Sir Cedric Firebrand and Lady Isolde Frostwind had positioned their cavalry units on the flanks, their objectives clear—defend and scout the enemy’s movements. The night was still, with the wind bearing only the faintest echoes of distant battle.

Lady Isolde’s forces, ever vigilant, spotted a small detachment of goblins attempting a flanking manoeuvre. Her command was swift. “Take them down!” she ordered, her icy voice as sharp as the frost she wielded. Her cavalry charged, cutting through the goblins like a blade through the cloth. The battle was quick and efficient, their movements precise, leaving no survivors.

Meanwhile, on another front, Sir Cedric's forces came across something of much greater importance. While his cavalry patrolled the ridges above the plains, they discovered the goblin settlement—a vast village tucked in the valley, shrouded in an eerie quiet under the moonlight. No guards were present. No signs of activity. Only the foreboding stillness of the night prevailed.“This is it,” Cedric whispered, his eyes narrowing.

His mind raced. A quick raid could decimate the goblins before they knew what hit them. Without awaiting formal orders, Cedric rallied his troops. "Light the signal, inform the others; we're going in. Burn it to the ground." The Crafter cavalry charged towards the settlement with terrifying speed. They tore through the unguarded gates, their torches lighting the night as they set fire to the wooden huts. Flames spread quickly, casting flickering shadows across the scene of destruction. Cedric's men rampaged through the village, searching for captives, but what they found was worse—only the lifeless bodies of human prisoners, their corpses mutilated and left to rot in the streets.

Among the dead, Cedric recognized the crest of Clan Vyrnsteel. His heart sank. “No survivors,” he muttered grimly, the firelight reflecting in his eyes.

The ambush occurred precisely at the moment he commanded the retreat. From the surrounding woods, hobgoblins—Larger and far more brutal than the goblins they had just faced—descended upon them like a tidal wave. Cedric's forces hastened to establish defensive positions, yet they were swiftly overrun, causing their formation to collapse.

Cedric, however, refused to panic. “Shields up! Mana barriers, now!” he barked, his voice cutting through the chaos. His soldiers obeyed, raising their mana shields just in time to block a volley of arrows and spells.

Cedric, unwilling to concede, charged a massive fire spell. "Burn, you beasts!" he bellowed, hurling a fireball into the midst of the hobgoblin ranks. The resulting explosion scattered them, momentarily bolstering the spirits of Cedric's troops. Yet, the hobgoblins advanced, undeterred.

Through the smoke, a hulking figure emerged—the goblin chief. His presence was unmistakable, towering over the other hobgoblins with an air of authority and menace. Cedric gritted his teeth. "So, you're their chief, huh?" he muttered, eyeing the figure. "Guess the one who was supposed to negotiate with Commander Sebeth was a decoy. How typical."

The battle was chaos, but Cedric wasn’t ready to give up. He ordered his elite guard to create an opening, charging straight for the chief. Effortlessly, the goblin leader brushed the men aside as if they were mere flies. Cedric gritted his teeth and focused his energy on summoning a powerful fireball. "This ends now!" he shouted, launching the spell with all his might.

The explosion tore through the battlefield, consuming nearby goblins in fiery wrath. Cedric, panting, watched as the smoke cleared. "It’s over..." he muttered, however, his composure was too soon. As the dust settled, the goblin chief emerged unscathed.

"This is it?" the chief sneered, his voice deep and mocking. "Now it’s my turn."

Sebeth arrived at the scene, his heart sinking as he took in the sight. The goblin village was ablaze, and the soldiers under Cedric's command were either unconscious or dead. Cedric himself was barely standing, his armour shattered, his body covered in burns and blood. He struggled to fend off the goblin chief, who loomed over him like death.

Hobgoblins rushed toward Sebeth and his men, but Alaric and Thaddeus wasted no time, cutting them down with practised ease. Still, the sheer numbers slowed their progress, leaving Sebeth to push ahead alone.

The goblin chief, too preoccupied with Cedric, didn’t heed Sebeth until the last moment. As the chief raised his blade, infused with fiery mana, to deliver the final blow, Sebeth darted forward, blocking the strike with his lightning-charged sword. The clash of their blades sent sparks flying.

Cedric, barely conscious, looked up. "Commander... you made it," he whispered, before finally collapsing from his wounds.

"Sorry I’m late," Sebeth muttered, his eyes never leaving the goblin chief. He tightened his grip on his sword. "I’ll take it from here."

The goblin chief grinned, his eyes glinting with malice. "I hope you're stronger than your friend here."

Sebeth’s gaze hardened. "I’ll make sure you regret underestimating us."
