I told her everything that had happened, and she listened without interrupting me, not even once. Over tea, through dinner, and even now as she braided my hair into four large cornrows going straight back, she just listened, with the occasional grunt to signify she was actually paying attention. I told her about being attacked by Johnny, which made her furious, about what Senex had told me, and about the Alpha of Moon City, Tsuki.
"Ever since I first saw him in the forest, Grandma, I can't get him out of my head. He has these red eyes. I mean, I had heard that members of the Luna pack had them, but to see them in person is just mesmerizing. It felt like I was drowning if I stared into them too long. Have you ever seen them before, Grandma?" I asked, trying to look at her, but she forced me to look straight ahead. She hated when I moved while she braided my hair. "Sorry," I chuckled.
"I've seen them a few times, and they are very spectacular, depending on the person, I guess, especially if you're the shallow type," she said, leaning down to grab the comb on the table.
"Are you calling me shallow?!" I asked, laughing.
"It was a statement, dear, not an accusation," she chuckled.
"Oh, well, I mean, he is very handsome. So I guess his eyes are spectacular," I said matter-of-factly. "I can't believe I actually said that out loud. Does that make me shallow?" I asked but got no response.
She stopped braiding my hair, and I turned to see her looking at me with a shocked expression. "What's wrong?" I asked, looking myself over in the small mirror she had sitting on the coffee table, noticing she was finished braiding my hair.
"You just called someone handsome. My grandson just called an Alpha handsome," she said, clutching her golden sun periapt hanging from her gold necklace.
"What?! No, I didn't! I said his eyes were spectacular," I corrected her.
"Because you think he's handsome," she said, putting a finger in the air, giving me a victorious smirk.
"Grandma..." I groaned in embarrassment. "You're being weird."
"Weirder than you being attracted to an Alpha of the Luna but hating every Alpha of the Sol?" she said, more as a statement than a question.
"That's not true! I loved Grandpa!" I retorted.
"Yes, but he's my mate, and your grandfather. I won't get to see you have any pups that way," she teased, and I grimaced at the statement.
"Could you be serious for a second? I haven't even told you the weirdest part yet! And dormants can't have pups. I'm never having pups," I said, frustrated and stern.
"You're correct; dormants can't have pups," she said, eyeing me knowingly, and I shifted nervously in silence. "Alright, alright," she chuckled. "I won't tease you too much. I was just shocked, is all," she said, kissing my forehead before going to sit down.
Eyeing her with heated cheeks, I continued. "Earlier, when I got angry, my hand... it changed. I'm positive I had claws, just like those of the Luna." I said, looking at my hands. "Then when I blinked, they were back to normal. Kind of."
"Mm. That is odd, but you know members of the Sol can't shift," she said, with a furrowed brow, taking a sip of her tea.
"I know, but I'd say it's a lot more than my imagination, Grandma. I literally cut my hand open with my nails, and by the time I went even ten feet, the wound was healed. This isn't even the first time something weird like this has happened since I woke up. I keep having these damn hot flashes, that seem to be more than hot flashes, and I can't stop thinking about red eyes. All these things started happening to me after I met that stupid Alpha. Something feels off all the time now, like I forgot something, and I can't get him out of my head. It's driving me insane. I just get so confused at the very thought of him, and it's like my body is changing somehow," I said, wrapping my arms around myself.
"What was his name?" she asked, setting her teacup down on the table.
"Huh?" I said, confused.
"The Alpha of Moon City that you keep mentioning—his name. What was it?" she asked sternly.
"Um, I'm not sure how to pronounce it. Sookie? Suki? Tsu—"
"Tsuki..." she said breathlessly, with wide eyes. "And you've been dreaming frequently about this Alpha?"
"Y-yes. How did you know his name, and that I'd been dreaming?" I asked hesitantly.
"The spell is being undone," she said with a smile as she stood from the table, walking over to me, touching my forehead, and closing her eyes. "How do you feel?"
"Fine... What do you mean spell?" I asked, gently removing her hand.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Rosie. I forgot you don't like being touched," she smiled apologetically, walking to a bookshelf in the living room and mumbling to herself. "Where is it?" Her magic sparked, and books began to move here, there, and everywhere throughout the house.
"No, Grandma, it's not that. What did you mean by spell? Someone put a spell on me?" I asked, confused, dodging the books with ease as they floated around my head.
"Rosie, we have a few things to talk about, sunshine," she said with an apologetic look on her face.
A knot formed in my stomach at the sound of that nickname. She only called me "sunshine" when she had bad news. It brought back the memory of when she told me Grandpa died, and at this moment, I knew I'd regret hearing what she had to say.
