I won't worry about it for now. The bonding activity takes an hour. I should plan what to draw. I can't draw for shit, but I'll try. I'll put in more effort than I usually would. I could sketch the room or look out a window and sketch what I see. I feel like an outdoor scene would be better. I look to a window on the left, Hisashi and Yuuma in my line of vision at the other table. Yuuma is drawing too. I wonder if he's any good?
I sketch the forest outside the window. They're basic trees and I don't know how to make them look realistic. I'd fail if I tried. I keep adding more trees, unsure if it's enough. Then I grab some colored pencils and color it. When I'm done, it's all just green. Great. This doesn't look good at all. Yuuma wouldn't let me crumple it up and throw it out the window, would he...?
I turn the horrendous drawing over so I don't have to look at it anymore. I sigh. Then I glance over at Gin to see how he's doing. I bet no one else here is very artistic either. I'd be surprised if one of us criminals were like some crazy good artist—
"Holy shit, you're a crazy good artist, Gin!!" I suddenly exclaimed after seeing his drawing. Looks like he's drawing the entrance of the camp from memory and it looks super realistic!! The sign is just as faded and morphed as when I saw it! I feel like if I touched the drawing, I'd feel how rough the sign is!
Gin is startled at my sudden exclamation. He covers the drawing with his arms on impulse. I notice his ears are red. Oh? Is he blushing because he's embarrassed? Cute... Wait, don't say that. I can't see him as cute or we might get close, which isn't the plan. I can still compliment him though. I have to after seeing that masterpiece.
I smile at Gin and move closer, trying to get a look at his face. "Don't hide it, it's really good! That's the camp entrance, right? It looks just like it! Especially the sign!"
Gin turns farther away, moving his drawing with him. Damn... I'm being too pushy. Fine, fine, I'll back off. I move away from him.
"Sorry~ But I wasn't lying. I mean it. Your drawing is amazing," I say.
There's silence. Gin doesn't say anything or even really move after that. I guess that's to be expected... But I feel like he's especially giving me the cold shoulder now. I didn't say anything wrong, right?? Whatever, I don't understand him. I don't really care to anyway.
The bonding activity ends, minus the bonding part. I'm not sure how the others did with their partners, but I don't care that much. If they get close, that's fine. Leave me out of it. But I didn't hear much talking except for my loud outburst. I doubt any of the other partnerships went too well.
We have community service next, as Yuuma calls it. Today, and probably most of this week, we'll be working on pulling weeds and tending to the camp's foliage. Yuuma also wants to start flower beds around the camp. We'll have to tend to them carefully so the flowers can bloom. Yuuma has a variety of seeds and teaches us how to plant them. I feel like he's well-educated in all kinds of things. It's a bit amazing.
After two hours, with short breaks in between if we needed it, Yuuma gives us time to wash off the dirt that we might've gotten on ourselves. Then we get to sit in the air conditioned cafeteria for the awards ceremony. After the awards ceremony, we'll get a longer break and I'm glad. This day is taking a lot out of me. We'll be doing this every single day...? I should stop being so optimistic about this camp. I've already come to the conclusion that this camp will be torture after all. I won't question it anymore.
"We'll start the awards ceremony now," Yuuma says. "Everyone has been following the schedule and doing everything required of them today. Thank you for that. All of you deserve your first reward. But first, I'd like to show off everyone's drawings from the bonding activity. I'd like to see how well everyone did."
Oh no. I'd rather shred my drawing then for it to see the light of day. I will just hang my head and ignore everything for a moment when my drawing is shown. Yuuma really wants to torture me.
Yuuma shows off Hisashi's drawing. It looks like ideas for skimpy clothing that only Hisashi would wear. It's surprisingly well drawn. I'd rather not encourage the pervert though. Next is Matsu's. It looks like a horribly drawn stick figure family. I think one of them is Matsu but I have no idea who the others are. There's a lot of them. They all look like men. What kind of family does Matsu have...?
Kentaro's is just stick figures too. It looks like the figures might be playing basketball...? It looks slightly better than Matsu's but stick figures don't look that appealing in the first place. Mine is shown and I immediately hide my face. As Yuuma shows each drawing, he's praising them more than I think he should. Why would you praise that crap? He also praises mine but I plug my ears to avoid feeling more humiliated than I already do.
When Yuuma shows Gin's, I have to look up again. It's really beautiful!! I almost want to put the drawing up on my wall. Yuuma especially praises this artwork.
"All of you put in great effort towards these drawings. Good job. I'm going to put these drawings up on the walls of the cafeteria to show them off," Yuuma says. Right! Gin's would look so good on the wall! But wait no, you're even putting mine up!? I won't stand for it!!
I suddenly stand up. "Excuse me... Counselor Yuuma... Can I kindly ask you to not put my drawing up on the wall? It would just taint this lovely establishment and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Right?" I give my best smile and I'm sure it's blindingly bright.
"Oh... Yes, if it makes you uncomfortable, I won't. I also didn't consider if any of you would want your drawings back. If you don't want them back, I'll keep them as a keepsake," Yuuma says.
"I'll take my drawing back!!" I exclaim. I don't really want it back, but it's worse if Yuuma keeps it. When I take it back, I'll throw it away. Probably even rip it up to get rid of the evidence.
Kentaro stands up too. "Please... Give me back mine too..." His expression looks pained. He probably feels the same humiliation as me.
I see Gin slowly stand up and start to raise his hand. Does he want to take his back too?? No way! His drawing is the one that should be put up on the walls! I can't let him take it back!
"PLEASE PUT GIN'S DRAWING UP!!" I yell before Gin can completely stand up. He gets startled and whips his head around to stare at me, wide-eyed, at my seat in the back by the front door. I focus on Yuuma. "Gin's drawing is absolutely amazing and deserves to be put up on the wall! It'll be a great addition to the cafeteria, and even the camp as a whole! This type of talent must be recognized!"
Yuuma seems taken aback. "Yes, I do agree. But if Gin doesn't want that—"
"Gin is talented, and he must recognize it!! If the drawing isn't put up on the wall, I will buy it from you! That's how good it is! Why wouldn't Gin want it up after hearing that!? It's alright, right, Gin!?" I won't give up.
Gin pauses. Then he sits back down, essentially saying it's alright. Yes! Success!! Yuuma then said he'd find a frame and a nail to put the drawing up on the wall. I sit down, satisfied. Ah, wait. I probably got too worked up over that. Oh well, it's fine to do something impulsive every once in a while.
We then claimed our rewards. Kentaro wanted a phone call so Yuuma let him use the camp phone in the kitchen. Hisashi teasingly said he wanted Yuuma as a reward and Yuuma ignored him. Didn't know he could be so cold... But he did well ignoring the pervert. Hisashi didn't really want anything else. Gin pointed to the art supplies, basically saying he just wants to be able to use them at any time as a reward. Yuuma granted it. Gin went back to drawing. Matsu was lost as usual but Yuuma explained again. Matsu only said he wanted cookies and Ana made some for him.
Then it was my turn. I guess I could actually get back some of the items I stole that are in my room. Or I could even get back the stuffed animal quokka... But I probably shouldn't. Why would I add more painful memories to my trip here? I just asked for a specific bottle of lotion that, unbeknownst to Yuuma, I stole and is actually pretty expensive. I don't really know what else to ask for, so why not something random like that? Maybe I could trade it among the criminals for something better. I'd really like to sell it, but I doubt anyone was allowed to bring cash with them. There's no use for cash here anyway. Items could start to be valuable though. Yuuma said he'd have an officer retrieve my item and bring it back here so it could take a day to get to me.
We were given a break to use our rewards. Kentaro was on a call the whole time, Gin drew the whole time, Matsu ate his cookies, and Hisashi and I just sat and rested after the day. I began getting tired. Once the 30 minute break was up, we had about an hour to clean up the cafeteria and ourselves if needed. Then we had Ana's lovely dinner. It was delicious spaghetti. Yuuma had something to say at the end of the day.
"That was our first real day," Yuuma says. "Now I'd like to hear feedback if you have any. Is there anything I should improve or add? I'll decide if it's necessary and make changes. I planned a lot for this camp, but it is my first time running something like this. I'd appreciate any feedback."
There was a moment of silence. Then I raised my hand. "Earlier, when we were meditating, the floor was a bit uncomfortable. Could we get anything more comfortable to sit on? Like a pillow?"
"Ah, right. It was a bit uncomfortable, wasn't it? Something more comfortable to sit on would be better. I'll look into that for tomorrow. Is there anything else?" Yuuma replied.
No one else said anything. Then after that, we could have more free time or just sleep for the night. I was tired from all the activities from today and just wanted to sleep. Our second day at the camp came to a close.
