Light Me Up - Chapter 10

Light Me Up - Chapter 10

Dec 27, 2024

A few hours later, I'm sitting on the cliff with my camera. The sun is about to disappear in the sea, the sunset already paints the sky in orange hues. After getting to know many of the others, I feel more welcome here but right now I just want some time to enjoy the scenery. I can hear the others talking behind me but I don't listen to what's being said. The noise they make doesn't disturb the peacefulness of this moment.

All I want to do is wait for the sun to go down. With every second, the sunset spreads more beautiful colours and I get my camera ready again. I wait for the perfect moment to take a picture instead of taking hundreds of pictures and having to find the best one later.

After I've taken three pictures, I notice someone sitting down next to me. It's Ayden, of course. "I'll never get enough of this view," he says while staring at the horizon. His voice distracts me for a second but I keep my eyes focused on the sunset. How can he be so relaxed while I already have this weird feeling inside of me again? He's sitting so close, my shoulder almost touches his arm. I check what the pictures look like to distract myself. Then I take ten more of them, just to have something to do.

Happy with my work, I finally put the camera down to enjoy the last minutes of the sunset. Ever since the discussion with the others, Ayden's presence makes me even more nervous. He asks if he can see the pictures and I hand him my camera. I quickly show him which button he has to push to open the gallery and look through the pictures. For just a short part of a second, my fingers brush his hand. This time, an electric feeling startles me. Before I can even think about the world getting brighter again, I feel his blue eyes staring at me but I try to keep looking at the sunset. Then Ayden looks at the pictures I took of the sunset and the ones from yesterday before giving me the camera back, "They're amazing, you're really good at this."

"Thanks, it's my favourite hobby," I reply, not really knowing what to say.

"Did you ever think about making this your job?" I can only chuckle when he asks that. Getting a job as a photographer would be a dream come true but it's also super unlikely.

"Where I live, people only need wedding photographers and my strengths are landscapes and nature in general. It's impossible to get a job in that area when you live in the middle of a big city and have no professional experience," I explain.

Ayden smiles softly at me, "Nothing is impossible." When he looks back at the horizon, I notice how dark it got. Without the sun, it also gets cold quite quickly. Looking back at the others, I see them starting a fire.

"Nadja and I should probably go back to the hotel now. We've got a busy day tomorrow and Nadja probably needs some more sleep than normal," I mention.

Ayden nods before turning to me, "Marco can drive you back to the hotel, we don't want you to get lost in the dark or fall off the cliff."

I stare at him for a moment, seeing the smirk that forms on his face. "We could have taken a car to get up here?" I ask him, only making his smirk wider before he chuckles.

"I thought you would enjoy the walk," he admits while getting up. I'm almost disappointed that he doesn't offer me his hand to stand up again but I'm also glad that I don't have to worry about my stomach doing somersaults again when he touches me. Walking back to the others, I see Nadja already saying goodbye and Marco walking towards a car. "Will I see you again tomorrow?" Ayden asks, walking a step behind me.

I tell him that we're going sightseeing but Nadja quickly interrupts me, "We'll be at the campfire in the evening!"

I give her a questioning look before whispering "What happened to 'Don't give in that quickly'?"

"You waited a whole day, that's more than enough," Nadja whispers back while Ayden talks to Lea. Apparently, she's coming back with us and her boyfriend. These girls really enjoy sticking close to their partners.

"Well, then I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!" Ayden says happily while Lea starts walking to the car. "Goodnight, princess." Blushing at his words and not trusting my voice, I give him an awkward wave and follow Nadja and Lea.

"Princess?!" Nadja whisper-shouts. I look down at my feet while continuing to walk.

"It's just a joke because we made a sand-palace today."

"Sure, a joke…" Nadja mumbles sarcastically. She can't say anything else about this because Lea and Marco are too close and we're just a few steps away from the car. Maybe she's right, maybe it's not just a joke. But why would he call me princess? Now that I think about it… he also called me beautiful this morning. Maybe that's just how they talk here. That's an option, right? He didn't notice that I blushed, did he? Great, I'm away from him for just a few minutes and I already start overthinking again.
