The Familial Ties

Book 1: Chapter 5

Book 1: Chapter 5

Oct 08, 2024

It seemed he wanted her to also learn the history of the kingdom and how to be a diplomatic leader. That was needed to be in the politics of the nobility. She may have never needed this before, but it was important to know now. After we finished talking about the plans for tomorrow Alice decided to make her way back to the library with Lucky trailing behind. It was nice to have a constant companion. “Let’s go find a book about magic.” “How about a book about magical beings, you’ll have time to learn about magic when you have classes in it.” She thought about it for a few seconds.

“Okay, I guess you’re right.” She wandered throughout looking for something to catch her eye. Then she saw a book about dark beings, ones to be wary of. “Good choice. It’s important to learn what to protect you from.” He said eyes gleaming at the cover. It was decorated with silver laced spider webs across the front and back. Inside there was a little synopsis of the guide. It was written in such a complexity of words that she could barely read it. “I need some help, would you mind?” “I’d love to. Set it on the table and I’ll read it to you.” She opened it up and laid it down on the well-made desk in front of her.

He began to read “This is a history of information amassed by the research I conducted over the years. Please be prepared to learn about the worst of creatures. This author sounds ominous for no particular reason. We’re not facing them right now.” Lucky said, straying from what was being read aloud. “Well, it may be a frightening read. Seeing what that is out there could be after you is scary.” He looked at her surprised. In his eyes there seemed to be a realization coming about. “Yes, it is very scary.” Turning the pages there were drawings of what the creature looked like. From the typical vampire to a wide range of demons that roamed the world waiting to strike. The pictures were well detailed and looked almost real. One thing she learned from this book was that vampires were weak to silver. She knew about stakes and sunlight, but not that. While flipping the pages she stopped on various different evil spirits and what turned them into one. It was an interesting read. Before she realized it the sun was setting, and dinner would soon be ready. Alice put the large book back and headed to the doorway. "Are you coming?"

Lucky’s point of view

As they left the library all he could think of was how scared she seemed to be of these creatures. It should not have shocked him so much. He now needed to realize she was fragile. She was no longer the woman he knew before. She would never be scared of anything that came in front of her. She was brazening and attacked evil beings without remorse. Now, she seemed to tremble at the thought of a vampire! He now had to focus not on just protecting her but making her stronger. Little did she know how long they knew each other and how precious Alice was to him. She had a different appearance and a much different personality. “Let’s go get dinner!” She smiled down on him. At least he was with her. That’s all he needed at the moment, in this very special moment.

It was much different from the past they had shared together. The two of them never seemed to see eye to eye. It was difficult for Lucky not to get along with her, he cared for her deeply. He was the reason for him to be alive. He always felt it was true. While she used to be extremely melancholic, she now was a cheerful person. It was night and day. After they finished dinner Alice went back up to her room first. Lucky would sit on the dining room floor in contemplative thought before he followed her. “I wonder what you are thinking so hard about?” Cal said before returning to his chambers. A small smile of wonder crept up. At that moment he felt like the lucky one.

Alice’s point of view

The morning came once more, and the day began in a rush. They had taken her down to the barracks to view the knights sparing. It was a sight to see. Lucky sat on her lap looking back and forth at them. “Look!” She said pointing at a knight who blocked the blow with his sword. “This is amazing!” It really was a breath of fresh air. If it wasn’t for her affinity for magic, maybe she too could’ve become a knight. She doubted she would ever be physically strong enough to match up with them in any lifetime. Cal came up from behind. “I wanted you to see and pick the knight that will be serving you personally.” Excitement swelled up inside her. She would get to choose her own knight! This was a dream come true. The need to pinch her cheeks to see if everything was real was beginning to surge. A boy about her age came out and began to spar with one of the other men. She was worried about him. But she remembered anything could happen. Look at Alice, she’s now becoming an apprentice to a powerful mage.

Surprisingly she saw him take down the man rather quickly. “Wow!” She clapped her hands in amazement. “He’s working on being a knight. He is quite a prodigy.” He went against another man and won again. The amazement of a kid her age battling a knight was a sight. She was determined to be just as strong. That way she could protect Lucky and everyone else that mattered to her. A few knights came up in front of her and introduced themselves. “These are the knights that are recommended. Pick your choice.” Caldirth said. “What do you think Lucky?” One of the men spoke up in an unmannered way. “You’re asking a cat?” I guess he didn’t hear that Lucky could talk yet, but it was too late for him. “I don’t think you should pick any of these men. Especially the one that was rude.” Lucky spoke glaring at him. “You can talk?” He said stupefied. “Then who?” Lucky stuck his paw up pointing up at the young boy. “He’s not even a knight yet.” The rude man spoke again. “Then make him one. He’s the one who will be looking after Alice if he’s willing.” Cal looked at Alice.

“Does that work for you Alice?” She wasn’t sure if the boy was up to the challenge, but she trusted her best friend’s judgment. “Yes, I would like him to watch over me. He’s a prodigy like you said. I’m sure he’ll do great.” The rude man rolled his eyes. The other knights looked at him as if telling him to watch it. “Do you still want to be a knight?” Cal reprimanded him. He straightened up his back. “Yes, sir.” “Then learn not to disrespect my family.” Alice heard the word family and almost began to cry. She quickly recovered as the boy came over to introduce himself.

He dismissed the others. “I’m here sir.” He said respectfully. “Introduce yourself to Alice.” He looked over and bowed at me. “My name is Luke. I have been training to become a knight for some time. I’m quite skilled, but I still need to work on improving my technique. If I may ask, why choose me?” It might not be what he wants to hear but she told him the truth. “Because Lucky believes in you, and I trust him.” He looked taken aback for a split second. “Thank you for helping Miss Alice choose me as her assigned guard.” Lucky looked him up and down and spoke. “You’re welcome. I think you will do a great job.”

Luke smiled. “I appreciate the opportunity.” He said looking at all of them. “Good. You can come with me to discuss the details of the job.” Cal said, leading him to the head knight. He seemed to be a great fit. She felt Lucky was right in his choice. She wondered how he picked him out so quickly. That was a question for later since she was going to meet all of her teachers today. It was going to be a busy afternoon. She walked towards the mansion and gave one quick glance back at the boy who would soon be protecting her. The strands of his red hair seemed to shine in the sunlight. She turned her head and looked away as soon as he glanced at her one more time.

By the time she was done meeting the teachers she was exhausted. They didn’t really go over much, except for introductions and some light homework for her to review before she started. They wanted to see what she knew. Her thoughts started to wander. She wondered how the conversation went with Cal and Luke.
