Deepwood forest. A forest at the edge of a continent. No human soul has dared to enter its depths. The forest floor lays perpetually dark. Gentle winds sway the leaves around. Leaving the smallest holes for light to get through. Leaving all but the most hardy of plants dead. The earth beneath the forest is bare. Only dead leaves from above can be seen. And the occasional animal.
In this part of the forest. It is unusually windy. The breezes cause a lone sapling to exist on the forest floor. Its existence is constantly in jeopardy. Many animals want to eat it. Too thin to protect itself. Permanently rooted to the ground. Unable to escape. Suddenly a rabbit appears. Its matte brown coat is perfect for camouflage along the forest floor. It nibbles at the lone sapling. Eating to fill its empty stomach. That was a mistake. Dropping from above, A glossy white beast appears. So strong and stealthy it doesn't bother with camouflage. The rabbit is instantly crushed under the beast's ragged claw. The rabbit is small. Too small. It will not satiate the beast tonight. The beast goes back on the prowl. Looking for prey.
Another animal is in that part of the forest that day. It is of a species not yet described. Living in its burrow. It quietly feeds its children. It will stay in this burrow for the next month. Nurturing the children it houses. Its safer that way. A young mother with meat on her bones and 3 small kids would be a feast for any number of beasts. They will stay in this burrow until the kids can fend for themselves. And the mother is so starved she can't tell who her kids are.
Suddenly the ground above them shifts. Like something enormous has landed. The entire burrow holds their breath. No one dares to make a noise. They will stay that way until the danger has passed. The weight shifts again. Whatever was above them is above them no longer. The smallest one lets out a small sigh of relief. Their instincts controlling them must have been a scary moment.
Suddenly the world crashes around them. Their bodies are pierced by claws from above. The beast had not left them. It had simply shifted its weight. Jumping up onto a tree to ambush them from above. The unknown creatures will satiate the beast. At least for tonight. Tomorrow, it will go back on the prowl.
A place to dump stories that get stuck in my head. May be scary, May not be. Listed as Horror as that is mostly what they are but all my short stories will end up here.
Collection of short stories and flash fiction. Updates whenever another story get stuck in my head. Hopefully infrequently. But that is unlikely. Don't expect quality. In fact. Don't have expectations.
