"See for yourself. And don't laugh at me."
"It's not a cockroach, right? Your jokes are hard to get."
"Haha, very funny. You should join a kindergarten class, who's scared of cockroaches?"
"You wouldn't be scared of a lion, I guess. I'm a normal person, those things are terrifying."
"You think I'm a South Indian movie hero? Everyone gets ripped Infront of lions... Anyway, you're such a typical girl, like the Gopi bahu (perfect daughter-in-law.) from stupid TV serials," Aadhira said sarcastically.
"Yeah, right! I like being like this, it's who I am."
"Don't tell me you're afraid of tiny mice too," Aadhira said, sitting next to me.
"So what? You live with me, don't you? You know everything about me. Hello, I'm Kiara, remember?"
"Ohh! Wear fucking ring. Open it quietly. I didn't do anything for you to keep glaring at me. Fine, you're lesbian or bi or whatever, but I can't quench your (overacting) thirst."
I threw a pillow at her. "Stop your drama." She smiled lightly and moved away. The box was really pretty. When I opened it, I felt like I was going to faint. This was really happening. I showed the box to her. "What is this, Aadhira? What kind of joke is this?"
"What? You like it, don't you, perfect ideal daughter-in-law," she said, laughing.
"Stop joking around. Why?"
"Why what? It looked beautiful, so I bought it."
"Do you give gifts like this to everyone?"
Aadhira took the box. "How many people are my best friends...?"
"Only me."
"Only you."
My heart pounded as I asked, "Why are you joking?" I was about to cry, and she said,
"I told you not to misunderstand."
I grabbed a pillow, feeling angry. I shouted, "Who the hell in this world gifts a diamond ring to their best friend?"
Aadhira. "I do." She got off the bed to avoid the pillow attack. She did seem a little scared of me. She got off the bed like a good child. I smiled.
"What should I do? Wear it?"
"Yeah, I bought it for you to wear. Listen! Don't wear it on your fourth finger (ring finger) otherwise Jal ke rakh ho jayegi teri bhoomi. (Your Bhoomi will be burning with jealousy.) " Aadhira said, smiling teasingly.
I picked the pillow and threw on her face again. She dodged it. I kept staring at the box. When I started putting on the ring, Aadhira was watching me. I smiled. I hugged her and said, "Thanks. I hope this diamond isn't real. You didn't spend too much, did you?"
"What do you want? Should I buy you a 1.5 million ring? Do you think I'm that rich?" She was talking as if hiding something, but I was happy, so I didn't ask much. I wore it to bed. The first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning was the ring. I brushed, had breakfast, packed my tiffin, and packed tiffin for Aadhira. She said bye, and I locked the room. When she was about to leave in the car, she saw me.
"Come on, I'll drop you off."
"We work in opposite directions."
"So what? I have time." She looked at her watch.
I got into her car. She saw the ring on my fourth finger. I had tried it in the bathroom and forgot to take it off.
"Why are you wearing the ring on your fourth finger?" Aadhira asked while driving.
"Ohh (I looked at my finger)."
"What? Are you planning something...?" she started teasing again.
"Nothing! The ring fits well on the fourth finger. It feels like you made it specifically for the fourth finger. It's a bit loose on other fingers." I am pretty nervous. I did not show.
"Okay," she smiled as if she knew why I did it. The atmosphere got too warm, so I tried to change the subject. "Play some music."
Aadhira played a song in the car, and my heart started racing. It was "Friends" Song by Anne-Marie and Marshmello, a song about love, not friendship. After listening for a while, my gay panic increased, and I said, "Silence is better." Aadhira nodded and turned off the music. I kept fidgeting with the ring, trying to move it to another finger. Just then, we reached my office. She said bye and waved. I smiled back, and something blurred came to my mind.
I was brushing my finger on a girl's waist. My eyes widened. I looked back. I could see the color of car. I sat in the office, got a coffee, and held my head. What had happened? Did something happen?
