Noah had quickly gotten dressed, and then checked on the sleeping Allie who lay in the back of the wagon, covered with one of his coats, next to the bags of flour. He put his hand to her forehead, and checked her temperature, which seemed normal. It seemed an infection taking her life was not a worry for now at the very least. He thought he would check her wound right before leaving.
He began to pack up camp, and fed Sara once again. That greedy horse, he would think to himself. The only reason she liked him after all was because of the food he would give to her.
He brushed his hair, thinking to himself that perhaps he should cut it before arriving in Kowa. He could be different than when Leo saw him last. But now, he worried more about Allie. As he loaded up his bag onto the wagon, she began to stir and then opened her bright blue eyes.
“Hey, you, you’re finally awake.”
He tried to sound as less anxious as possible and smiled, while awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck in a soothing manner.
“I restitched your leg. You fell unconscious quite suddenly last night.”
“…”
Allie did not reply nor offer much of an action as a reply, but merely stared at him, well not at him. He supposed it was as if she was looking at something behind him. So he turned and looked, seeing nothing before turning back to her again, trying to smile more eagerly, sensing an emotion from her, fear.
“Thank you,” she gave him her gratitude, her voice weak.
“Would it be alright if I checked it again now?” He asked, approaching her, stepping into the wagon, and sitting uncomfortably cross-legged near where Allie lay.
“I wasn’t trained as an apothecary, however I do know-”
“No!” She suddenly shouted.
“It is all right! Thank you for your hospitality!”
She stared wide-eyed at him as he lost his smile, the tension was obvious between the two of them. They were strangers, Noah knew that Allie’s fear was not on unfounded beliefs. He was not someone she knew or had met before. Yet here they were. However, her words had surprised him a bit. At any rate a wound like that would need professional care. Even he would not be able to treat it if it became infected. And clearly from her horrible stitching he had spent the previous evening undoing, she was not educated in such matters.
Well, he wasn’t either, but he had been taught on simple medical things should something happen to him or Leo while they were out. What he seemed to wonder now, was how desperate this woman must have been to have seemingly sewn her own leg closed. It was a fresh wound. The mystery of this woman continued to haunt him of who she might be running from.
“Perhaps I may check it later, Ms. Allie?”
He gently smiled again, sensing a great fear from her. Although, she seemed better rested than she looked the previous day, her expression appeared as though she had just seen a bear.
“…”
There was no reply as Noah waited for an answer.
“Are you hungry?” He asked, but Allie shook her head.
