How odd it was, he had not seen this woman eat once since he first picked her up. As he was a reader, he recalled tales and stories of vampires, those beings with pale skin, who did not eat human food, and ate the blood of animals and people. He quickly shook the thoughts from his head and realized that the more proper answer for her denial of food was out of a humble and panicked nature.
He was going to leave at this moment, but then he had an idea.
“I suppose I am terribly hungry,” he stated, a slight smile on his face as he got off the wagon and pulled a rifle out from one of the draws along the side, along with soft pulled apart cotton, a bag, and horse ear coverings, which he put over Sara’s ears while praising her for what an old happy horse she was.
Noah had preferred not to hunt, mostly out of no hunger he had and a lack of skill. However, he had worried that there would be nothing here. Although there were trees, it was no longer a forest like the previous day. Even though he realized with his thin body, he could do better than to eat merely vegetables and fruits. Leo’s mother had thought so too, as did his own mother.
“You should put these in your ears should I be nearby. The sound of a gunshot is quite loud.”
He handed Allie two small cotton pieces, touching her gloved hand in the process.
He wondered why in this warm air she would wear black gloves. Even he could feel the heat radiating from her hands as she glanced at him wearing the same expression she had worn, and then he left her and Sara.
Then ten minutes later, Allie would hear two gunshots in the distance. She sat up then, staring at her left leg which had been bandaged, her stockings in a worse condition than they had been before. It ached terribly. She had been high on adrenaline for the precious day, making her forget her pain for even a moment.
