The Crown of Dusk and Flames

Chapter 6 - Evander

Chapter 6 - Evander

Oct 19, 2024

The cool night air wrapped around me like a shroud as I stood on the balcony of Skyreach Citadel, the vast expanse of Eldoria sprawling beneath me. The floating islands glimmered in the moonlight, their beauty almost surreal against the inky sky. I could hear the distant hum of the Cloudsea below, the water reflecting the stars like diamonds scattered across a dark  cloth. Yet, despite this breathtaking panorama, my heart felt heavy, weighed down by an unease I could not shake. I leaned against the cold stone railing, my thoughts spiraling into chaotic circles. The stillness of the night offered no comfort, only amplifying the tempest brewing within me. How many times had I stood here before, gazing at the very same stars, yet now everything felt different. I thought of Alaric, the meeting at the docks lingering in my mind like a dark shadow. I had watched him earlier, his posture tense and rigid, eyes darting with a guardedness I had never seen before. It gnawed at me, that unspoken secret, twisting like a knife in my gut.

The peace between Drakhelm and Valtoria felt more fragile than ever, as if it were made of glass. The treaties, the alliances- they seemed like a house of cards, ready to collapse at any moment. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something dark lurked just beneath the surface, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. My mind raced through memories of our family’s history, of battles fought and peace brokered, and I wondered how long our hard-earned stability would hold. I turned my gaze back to the horizon, where the clouds drifted lazily across the sky, obscuring the stars momentarily before revealing them again. The serenity of the scene was maddening. I was trapped between my responsibilities as crown prince and the instinctual dread whispering in the back of my mind. It felt like I was standing on the edge of a precipice, the chasm of uncertainty yawning before me, threatening to swallow everything whole.

As I stood lost in thought, I sensed a familiar presence beside me. I turned to find my mother, Queen Seraphina, her silhouette framed by the soft glow of the lanterns within the citadel. The gentle light illuminated her light blonde hair, which caught the moonlight like spun silver, and her kind smile brought a flicker of warmth to my heart, a stark contrast to the cold grip of fear that had settled there.
“Evander,”
she said softly, her voice a soothing balm against the storm brewing inside me.
“You look troubled, my dear.”
I tried to muster a smile, but it faltered, the weight of my worries clinging to me like a shroud.
“Just thinking, Mother,”
I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. Seraphina stepped closer, her presence radiating comfort.
“You know you can talk to me about anything, don’t you?”
She placed a delicate hand on my shoulder, grounding me in that moment.
“What weighs on your heart?”
The question hung in the air, heavy with expectation. I hesitated, torn between the urge to call out my fears and the instinct to shield her from the encroaching darkness. I had seen too much already- too much that she should never have to bear. I wouldn’t want to talk bad about my brother around her.
“It’s just… everything feels so uncertain lately,”
I finally admitted.
“The peace between Drakhelm and Valtoria- it feels fragile. Like a candle in a storm.”
She nodded, her eyes reflecting a depth of understanding that made my heart ache.
“I share your concerns, Evander. The balance we have fought so hard to maintain is delicate. But you must not let fear cloud your judgment. Our family has always sought peace, and I believe that it is still within our grasp.”
“But what if it isn’t enough, Mother?”
I pressed, my voice thick with emotion.
“What if all of this- our treaties, our diplomacy- is made to crumble ? I feel like there are forces at play that none of us can see. Something… darker. And Alaric… I fear he is getting into things he shouldn’t participate in..”
Seraphina’s expression shifted, her brow furrowing with concern.
“Alaric is… still finding his way, just as you are. Sometimes, the shadows we see in our loved ones are merely reflections of our own fears.”
“But I’ve never felt this way before,”
I confessed, the weight of my anxiety spilling over like a cup filled to the brim.
“I sense unrest in the air, a tension that others seem oblivious to. I fear for the future... the peace our family has fought to uphold for generations is more than just treaties; it’s a delicate balance of trust between our people and the humans. If that trust breaks… I don’t know what could happen.”

Seraphina stepped closer, wrapping her arms around me in a warm embrace that enveloped me like a cocoon. I felt her heartbeat against me, a steady rhythm that grounded me, pulling me away from the edge of despair.
“Evander, my dear. You are wise beyond your years, and your instincts are sharp. You carry the weight of our kingdom on your shoulders, but you must remember, you are not alone in this.”
I closed my eyes, leaning into her warmth, feeling the familiarity of her touch seep into my bones.
“But what if I can’t protect you all?”
I murmured.
“What if my fears come true?”
“Evander, you are still a child. You have already shown great courage, my son,”
she said, pulling back to look into my eyes, her gaze steady and filled with love.
“But do not let your fears consume you. Remember, it is not the darkness we see that defines us, but how we choose to confront it. And I have faith in you.”
Her words washed over me, a gentle tide that pulled away the jagged edges of my anxiety. I could feel her unwavering belief wrapping around my heart, fortifying it against the shadows lurking just outside our fortress walls.
“I’m just so afraid of losing everything we’ve built, Mother. The thought of conflict tearing us apart… it keeps me awake at night.”
“I know, my dear,”
she said, her voice soothing yet firm.
“But you must trust in your strength and the strength of our family. Together, we are more than the sum of our parts. We can weather any storm.”
I nodded slowly, though my heart still felt heavy with unspoken worries.
“I wish I could shake this feeling,”
I confessed.
“I wish I could believe that everything will be alright.”
Seraphina smiled softly, her eyes reflecting the moonlight with an ethereal glow.
“Sometimes, it is our deepest fears that teach us the most valuable lessons. Perhaps this feeling you have is not just a warning, but a call to action. You are a leader, Evander. A light in the darkness. You must learn to trust your instincts and use them to protect those you love.”
Her words sank deep into my heart, planting a seed of resolve within me. I had always sought to be a beacon of hope, a bridge between our two worlds. Perhaps it was time to embrace that role fully. I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of my worries begin to lift, if only slightly.
“Thank you, Mother.“
She squeezed my hand, her warmth a reminder that I was never truly alone.
“Whenever you feel lost, look to the stars. They are constant, even in the darkest of nights. You are destined for greatness, Evander, and no amount of fear can dim your light.”
As we stood together on the balcony, the wind whispering through the air, I felt a renewed sense of purpose surging within me. I would not let fear dictate my actions; I would fight to protect the peace between our realms. And as long as I had my mother’s love and support, I would find the strength to face whatever darkness lay ahead.
“Promise me you’ll take care of yourself, Evander,”
Seraphina said, her voice gentle but firm.
“And always remember that I believe in you.”
“I promise, Mother,”
I replied, my heart swelling with gratitude.
“And I will do everything in my power to keep our family safe.”

As she turned to leave, I felt the last remnants of my fears dissipating like mist in the morning sun. The shadows still loomed, but now I knew that I would not face them alone. I would carry my mother’s wisdom with me, a guiding light through the uncertainty. The peace between Drakhelm and Valtoria would be tested, but I would stand firm, ready to defend it with everything I had.
“Goodnight, Evander,”
she said, her voice fading as she walked back into the warmth of the citadel. I watched her go, feeling the warmth of her presence linger like the last rays of sunlight at dusk. Once she was gone, I returned my gaze to the horizon, the darkness of the night sky a stark contrast to the warmth of our conversation. The stars above twinkled brightly, distant and untouchable, yet somehow close enough to inspire hope. I took a moment to breathe, letting the cool air fill my lungs, the clarity of the night settling around me like a protective mantle. I resolved to trust in my instincts, to be vigilant, and to cherish the fragile peace we had fought so hard to maintain. I would watch over my family, shield them from whatever dangers loomed ahead, and confront the shadows that threatened to engulf us. I was not merely a prince of Drakhelm; I was Evander Rowan Ashbourne, the bearer of a legacy that had stood the test of time, and I would honor it with every beat of my heart. And as I stood there, the moon rising high above, I realized that despite the uncertainty, I had a purpose- a reason to fight. In that moment, I understood that courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to stand strong in its face. I would not falter. Not now. Not ever.
