The proctor for the test soon came in and began the test. After multiple hours the first test had been completed. After the first test, everyone had a quick break which led to small discussions. Jake looked around and saw that Selina was still alone as she scribbled something. His heart tightened when he thought about talking to her, which led him to look away and not dare to make small talk.
Peeping behind him, he saw Sven staring at him. Giving a little smile, Sven came up to Jake. "What's up man, it's been a while!" Jake laughed as he gave a handshake to Sven. "How have you been, Sven? That test was really hard." Jake sighed as he reminisced about the past. "Man, that test kicked my butt, when I got to the 15th question I realized the time had already passed." Sven looked ghastly as he spoke. Jake couldn't help but laugh. After they talked about a few different things, Sven finally said something that interested Jake, "Hey, I see you looking at Selina." Sven had a sly grin as he pointed to Selina who now spoke with the aforementioned Sarah from beside Sven.
Jake panicked as he tried to evade the question, "W-what are you talking about?" his eyes danced around the gym as he tried to avoid Sven's gaze. "You can't hide it from me! I saw how you were looking at her." Hitting Jake's arm with his elbow, Sven raised his eyebrows with a smile. "Ugh, so what!" Jake could only admit it, "Haha, I knew it! You always had a thing for athletic girls." Sven couldn't help but laugh as he guessed it on the mark.
Jake could only roll his eyes, "What does this all have to do with you?" Sven tensed up when he heard this, "You see who she is talking to? That's Sarah Gold, I've known her for a while but have been unable to get close, if we team up, then getting the interest of the two girls doesn't seem far-fetched!" Sven had shining eyes as he spoke. Jake, however, only sighed.
"You think we would be able to gain their interest? Not even talking about you, but look at me! I am not in their lane whatsoever, I would just be embarrassing myself if I try to talk to them." Jake had a sour face as he spoke. Sven only looked at Jake with a weird face, "You know, you have always been like this, unconfident. Although yes you are not the best-looking guy, you are a funny man, and although you don't talk to the girls, you have a lot of acquaintances with the guys, if you can just get over your fear of talking to girls, you would do wonders." Jake looked up at Sven with surprise. He had no idea he had thought that way about him. "That…" Jake had no response as he looked down. "Alright everyone, the break is up, get ready for your next exam."
Sven looked at Jake with a serious expression, "Think about it, we still have one break after all." Going Back to his seat, Sven sat back down. With the test starting Jake also sat back down. 'What is he talking about? Sure I've got a lot of friends, but that does not equal being able to flirt with girls.' The next test was hard for Jake as his thoughts were wandering the whole time.
"Gah, I've messed up!" Recalling the last exam, Jake felt horrible. He was too focused on Selina the whole time which led to many muddleheaded answers. "So buddy, you wanna do it or not?" Hearing Sven's voice, Jake didn't even look back. "I messed up that test because you are putting these stupid thoughts in my head."
Sven rolled his eyes, "You would've been like this anyway if you kept on peeping at her. With the end of the school year coming up, this may be the final day you can swoop in, don't you wanna at least try?" Jake's eyes widened as this thought crossed his mind a few times. Gritting his teeth, he stood up. "Fine! Whatever, it's not like I will see anyone here after next week." Seeing this, Sven gave a thumbs up, "That's the spirit!"
After that, they went over a quick game plan as they waited for the two girls to start talking again. With the plan sorted out, Jake was nervous. He watched as Sven took the vanguard and walked up to the girls. Jake could only follow behind as he waited for his queue.
"Hello ladies, how have the exams been going for you all?" Seeing Sven walk over, the two looked at him and Jake. Sarah had an unreadable expression while Selina had a neutral expression. "It was pretty good, I feel confident I will pass at least," Selina spoke first as she gave a slight smile. Looking at this, Jake froze.
"Yeah, although I am not the greatest student, I crammed hard enough to have confidence that I will pass." Sven gave a slight chuckle as he looked at Sarah. "What about you Sarah? Are you confident about the next one too?" When Jake heard this he focused up. That was the sign that Sven had given him. He watched as Sven started to shift his body in a way that would make it hard for Selina to be in the conversation with Sven. That allowed Jake to hit Selina up solo.
The problem was, he didn't know what to say! "S-Selina, which test was harder for you? I found that science exam much harder." Jake was nervous as he spoke but recalling Sven's advice he had a little confidence. "Oh, the science one? That one is my easy subject, the one before that, the math one, was much more intimidating for me." Seeing her awkward expression as she scraped her cheek made Jake's heart pound. But glancing at Sven who was still in conversation he pushed on. "What gave you problems? For me, my math is my strong suit since my memorization of formulas is great."
Hearing this, Selina thought for a moment, "Hmmm, if it was anything, it would be derivatives. I happened to miss that week and because of volleyball, I lost a lot of potential studying time." She sighed as she thought about her lack of studying. "Ahh, that's a shame." Jake froze and didn't know how to continue the conversation. Silence prevailed for a couple of seconds as they both stood awkwardly. Jake's mind was running at a thousand miles per hour thinking of an interesting topic. He thought of the many ideas Sven had given him and finally thought of something.
"Oh uh, just wondering, what college will you be going to next year?" Although he was fumbling his words, it still came out somewhat coherently. Jake was still scared that she might just sit right back down and stop talking to him. Selina was a little surprised that he talked again, as she too thought the conversation was dead. "I am going to Reuben University about an hour away near Huntersville." Jake was surprised as he heard this, he felt an indescribable pain, "Woah, that's pretty far, I can't bear to leave the city so I am just going to one of the local colleges." Jake was mad he too didn't go to her university, but it was too late now.
Selina didn't know what to say, so she just remained quiet. Jake also was fine with this as he felt even talking to her this much was more than he could ever imagine. They awkwardly stood there as if waiting for the break to end. For Jake, he didn't wanna leave Sven behind, and Selina felt awkward sitting down with everyone around her desk.
Jake tried listening to the conversation between Sven and Sarah but what he heard made him frown. "Ugh, did you have to choose the same college as me?" A voice of disgust came out of Sarah's mouth as she spoke to Sven. "W-what do you mean, it's not like I chose it because you go there. My older brother's there now, why wouldn't I go there?" Sven looked awkward as he spoke. "Well, you better not bother me there like you have here. I'm fed up with your constant annoyances over the past year. Just leave me alone next year." Sarah had a dark expression as she walked away.
Sven only stood in a daze as he turned around to Jake. The two met eyes, and Jake looked away as if saying, he didn't hear a thing. Sven was downtrodden as they both walked back to their seats. Jake wanted to make a report to Sven on how he did, but he felt Sven might strangle him out of envy.
