The final test was finished swimmingly as Jake had a clear and happy mind from the previous encounter. After the final exam, the school day had ended, and with that, the final days of school were considered fun days. Getting up, Jake saw Sven's ugly expression and sighed, "Don't worry bud, there are a lot of fish in the sea." Sven looked at him and said, "At least mine isn't going to a college over an hour away." Jake felt betrayed as he looked at Sven, "She at least has a somewhat favorable impression of me. Unlike you, who seems to have made a terrible impression." Sven clenched his fists when he heard Jake speak, but only sighed exasperatedly.
"My good ole brother, how did it come to this?" Sven dropped as he walked out of the gym with Jake. Jake only shook his head, as he said bye to Sven and other people he saw.
Returning home, he went through his drawers. Today wasn't over yet. It was time for his part-time job. He worked at a gas station down the road in hopes of saving money for a car. Putting on his uniform he walked out the door. His parents hadn't come home from work, so he did not need to slow down. Walking down the road, in less than 8 minutes, he arrived at his work.
Walking in, he saw two people in the aisles checking stuff out, and an old man at the counter. He blew smoke out the window and when he saw Jake he shouted, "Hey boy, you are a minute late!" Jake only rolled his eyes, as he explained there was more traffic today. "Gah, I know you are trying to skip out and leave old Bern hanging, but it seems fate has still pushed you here today." Old Bern was the owner of this gas station, there are only two other employees here besides Old Bern and that was Jake and his granddaughter. Old Bern would get more people but he has been getting old in recent years and needed someone to hold the fort while his granddaughter went to school. That's why he had accepted Jake for the job.
In the backroom, Jake stored his lunchbox in a locker and walked out. Old Bern had already started moving from the cash register, leaving a customer waiting. Smelling the smoke, Jake frowned but didn't say anything. Sitting at the cash register, Jake took the orders of the customers. Not a lot of people came, as it's more of a rundown gas station compared to the more fancy ones across the city, but it had been here the longest, making it favorable among the old people.
Time passed slowly, as Jake lazily took orders, and did menial cleaning. Luckily he had his earbuds which numbed the work but it was still long. Looking at the night sky, he sighed. Every five minutes, he was looking at the clock as he waited for someone. However, the more he looked, the less time passed. Finally, after what seemed like a long day, the sound of the door opening was heard. He sighed in relief when he saw who it was.
A tall girl with blonde hair, sunglasses, and bubblegum walked in. She looked like a party-girl college student. Seeing Jake, she waved. This was Joana, Old Berns granddaughter. "You are looking tired!" She smirked as she walked to the counter. Jake could only sigh, "Well when I've been doing exams all day and have to go back and sit all day, I can get a little tired." Jake was indeed tired after all of the sitting and thinking. "Ahh exams, I did those last month for college, so I understand your pain. Well, now that I'm here you can pack up and head home." With that, she walked to the back to get her uniform on. Watching her back he gulped as stared at her figure. She was like a model as she had a big butt being contained by her tight jeans. Adding on her white crop top that showed some of her stomach, he could barely contain it.
Swallowing, he waited for her to come out in a baggy green uniform before he also headed back to grab his stuff. Walking out of the room, he stepped past the counter. Joana was already at the counter on her phone texting as she waited silently. "Hey, the old man has been smoking a lot more recently, I would be sure to get his body checked out soon. With that guy's age, he may start falling apart." Jake spoke nonchalantly as he walked out. Hearing this, Joana looked at Jake through her sunglasses with a smile. Jake didn't hear an answer and felt awkward, 'Maybe I shouldn't have said anything.' He only sighed as he looked at the dark streets in front of him. 'How does she see at night with those sunglasses on.' Many thoughts drifted through his mind as he walked home that night.
Walking in, it was already late at night so Jake had to silently creep through the house to make sure his parents didn't wake up. Once he got to his room, he thought about today. Although it started on a bad foot with the bus ride, it was a pretty okay day. Lying on his bed, he sighed, "What am I gonna do after school ends?" With that question, he soon fell asleep easily.
…
"What is your desire?" A soft voice woke Jake up. He looked around confused. All around him was a burning field. The fire rose a couple of feet high as it burned what looked like corn as easily as grass. "What is your desire?" Jake now heard the voice clearly as he looked around warily. "Who are you?" He tried turning around but all he saw was more burning corn. Only around his feet was a four-meter wide circle that stopped the fire from spreading.
"Why do you live?" The voice spoke again, this time asking a different question. When it spoke, Jake felt his heart pound as memories flooded in his head. They weren't foreign ones as the past flowed in his head. His first time getting a B on a test, the time he was kicked off the athletics team, the first time he asked a girl out, the time he ran into some thieves in an alley, the time he visited his family from a long distance, multiple memories of playing video games. They all seemed to appear one after another. Soon, it all stopped as Jake gasped for air.
"Why do you live?" With another sentence, the voice became louder. Jake held his head due to the pain in his head. "I don't know! I don't know!" He felt he was going crazy as he spoke. "Then die." His body froze before the fire of the field started to spread. It began inching its way toward Jake. The heat of the flames started scorching his body as it became closer. Jake only stayed silent as he huddled on the ground. The flame was crawling up his body, as it burned his body.
As it was about to cover it all, Jake stood up and shouted. It was unknown what he said, but the flames disappeared. "So, that's your purpose of living." With the disappearance of the flames, everything became quiet.
