The Familial Ties

Book 1: Chapter 8

Book 1: Chapter 8

Oct 22, 2024

Alice’s viewpoint

It was such a bustling atmosphere. She barely had the time to look at all the other shops in the area. Down the lane there were more upscale shopping experiences. Alice wasn’t sure if she was ready to walk into such a store. She had already felt out of place just shopping in the capital. She could not even fathom how she would feel in a place of luxurious goods. So instead, she went and grabbed some lunch at a nearby restaurant. Lucky and Luke followed suit in front of the other knights. She wanted to offer Luke some lunch but knew it would be frowned upon. In the end she decided not to. The waitress came over and offered her a selection of tea and sandwiches. She chose an array of small sandwiches and a pot of earl grey tea. The decor inside was extremely eye pleasing. They even had a chandelier on the ceiling. Soon the tea was brought out and was poured for her. She could have easily poured it herself but knew not to decline. She went to drink it and almost burned her tongue. “Be careful please.” Luke said to her. His brow furrowed in concern. “You need to let it cool down.” Lucky chastised her. He didn’t want her to get scalded either. The other knights were guarding the door not even paying the slightest attention to their conversation.

She wondered if they didn’t like her because of her background. But in the end, it didn’t matter whether they liked her or not. She was here at their leader’s home, and they didn’t really have a say in the matter. It was a better thought to have than to worry if they liked her or not. Overthinking never led to a good outcome. Smiling, she told the two of them not to worry. It’s not like she was severely burned. The little sandwiches were brought out. Before she could stop herself with better judgment, she offered one to Luke. His cheeks flushed. Oh no. She felt guilty that she embarrassed him. “No, thanks. I appreciate the offer.” “I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking right.” He assured her it was okay. “There’s going to be a festival tonight if you would like to go.” “Oh. That would be great.” It would be a great time. Alice just knew it.

Time flew by as she walked around seeing everything that she could. A day wouldn’t give the capital justice. It was finally time for the festival. There were games on each side of the street. Instead of playing them at the moment she decided to see what the majority of the citizens were up to. She saw a large mass of people gathered in the distance. As she made her way into the crowd to see what was going on she heard music being played. It was such a lively scene. People were dancing in the town square. From friends just enjoying the music to couples out on a date. It was beautiful. Even though she had no one to dance with she decided she would. Before she could there was a fearful scream coming from the other side of the square. There was a large wolf-like creature. It was all black with red eyes. Before she realized it everyone was running away in a frenzy. Is this what they were battling in the war? It was a frightening being. But for some reason she felt a pull towards it. “Come with me!” Lucky bellowed at her. It knocked her out of the trance she was in, and she followed him.

The knights were fighting to save the citizens. There seemed to be more coming this way. There must’ve been at least six of them. When she looked back, she saw a horrifying sight. People were being slammed to the ground and torn apart. She shut her eyes. This is what pure fear felt like. Luke followed behind Lucky and pulled out his sword to protect her. She ended up running into an alleyway where Lucky stared at a man who was carrying a sack. He looked disgruntled but had a malicious grin on his face. “I’m so glad that a citizen has found me.” He pulled out a red crystal and slammed it onto the ground in front of him. A beast started to form but she felt compelled to grab the crystal. “Watch out.” Lucky yelled at Luke. A beast appeared behind him. “Shit.” He swore. He started to fight for not only his life, but Alice’s life as well. Something surprising happened when she grabbed the crystal. It somehow absorbed into her body. Stunned, she turned around to tell Luke, but he had been knocked out thanks to the monster. The monster moaned in pain as it finally fell to the ground and returned to its crystal state. She quickly grabbed the red crystal, and it did the same thing again. Her body felt lighter when she absorbed it. She felt like she could do anything.

“How did you do that?” The man looked fearful and stunned. “I don’t know.” Before he could slam another one to the ground Lucky leaped and grabbed his face, clawing at his eyes. She ran to the bag and grabbed the rest of them and somehow absorbed them once more. Alice felt a strange power start to form inside of her. She felt physically stronger, as if she could smash a brick into pieces. Once the man’s eyes were clawed, he screamed in anguish. “Don’t tell anyone what you were able to do.” Lucky warned her. “It may help others, but it could kill you. I won’t let that happen. I’ll let you know how you were able to do this when we get back to the mansion.” This was a shock. “You knew I could do this? How did you know?” “Everything will be clear when we get back. Please calm down. Your little knight needs to be attended to. He has blood all over his forehead.” She looked down at Luke and she quickly called for help. She wouldn’t let him die. She began to run out of the alleyway, but Lucky stopped her. “There might be more creatures out there. Let me go.” He left her with so many questions as he ran out to find help.

Thankfully Lucky came back with the knights that were supposed to protect her. Alice wasn’t mad at them. Instead she was proud of them for saving as many people as they could. She was grateful to have such caring knights at her side. They carried Luke out and got him medical attention. “I’m extremely sorry miss Alice. We got caught up in the moment and we won’t allow it to happen again.” “There’s no need to be sorry. You protected the people and that’s what truly matters.” They all looked at her in a new way. It was as if they were truly seeing her for the first time. “Yes, thank you for understanding, but it’s our duty to protect you.” They said and escorted her back to the carriage. They surrounded her so that she wouldn’t see the carnage that was left over from the attack. She couldn’t understand what that man’s motive was. Maybe he just wanted to cause chaos. He would surely suffer in prison for what he did. It also helped that Lucky had nearly dug his eyes out. She would be sure to get an explanation from him when she got home.

Cal was waiting outside for us. He looked clearly worried and apologetic. “I should have come with you. I just got word of what happened. I can’t believe someone would go to such lengths to do anything this evil.” In a split second he wrapped his arms around Alice. “I’m glad I didn’t lose you. I’ll always come with you.” She didn’t expect him to be so concerned. She felt herself start to tear up. “I’m okay.” She told him even though she didn’t feel that way. It was supposed to be a fun time but ending up in confusion and terror. One thing that plagued her mind was how she could absorb the crystals and what it meant. Could no one else do this? Maybe she would ask Cal a little bit later about what these beings are. She felt relief coming back home and with Cal’s warm gesture her mind eased somewhat. She had to remind herself that she would be okay. It will all be figured out, at least she hoped so. “Let’s get you ready for bed. I know it must have been a horrific time for you. Just rest, no classes tomorrow.” “Okay. Thank you.” He ushered her up the stairs and she almost ran into her bedroom. She sat down on her bed and took a few deep breaths to call herself. Lucky looked at her from the doorway. “I think it’s best if you rest for the night. I’ll tell you everything tomorrow. You need some sleep.”
