Chapter 9: Mirror, Mirror

Chapter 9: Mirror, Mirror

Dec 09, 2024

The darkness churned around us, a suffocating wave that swallowed the snowy forest in its inky depths. Shadows clawed at the edges of my vision, pulling me into their abyss. Panic surged within me, but just as despair threatened to take hold, a radiant light cut through the shadows—a brilliant shard of glass shimmering in the dark.

With a thunderous crack, the mirror shattered, shards scattering like stars across the snow. From the depths of time stepped a figure I recognized all too well—a younger Rayguest, still a half-elf, vibrant and full of the fiery spirit I remembered from old tales. The air hummed with energy, a palpable force that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

“Rayguest?” I breathed, incredulous. The past had come alive in front of us, and this younger version of the legendary monk looked fierce, determination etched on his youthful face. I could see the glint of his old gear—the Claws of the Ice Bear gleaming in the low light, their icy sheen matching the wintry landscape around us.

“I came back to help you!” Rayguest called, his voice echoing with urgency. “You need my strength to defeat Matthew!”

Without hesitation, he charged toward Matthew, who was still caught in the throes of dark energy, shock turning to rage as he faced this unexpected foe. “You dare come back to challenge me?” Matthew spat, shadows writhing around him like serpents ready to strike.

“Not for me,” Rayguest declared, his voice strong and clear, resonating with the fire of a bygone era. “But for everyone you’ve wronged!” He launched himself forward, weaving through the darkness with an agility that was breathtaking, each movement a testament to the bond he shared with Raye.

Raye stood beside me, her eyes wide in disbelief. “Is that me? From the old days?” The words slipped from her lips, filled with a mixture of awe and recognition as she watched her past self engage with the darkness.

Before I could process this revelation, Rayguest’s fists flew like the wind, each blow a perfect combination of grace and fury. The shadows around Matthew recoiled as Rayguest landed strike after strike, his energy cutting through the darkness like a blade, each impact resonating with the echoes of a long-lost partnership.

“Vox! Pally! Now’s our chance!” Raye shouted, snapping me out of my astonishment. “We have to support him!”

“Right!” I gripped my club, adrenaline surging through me as I moved into position. “Pally, let’s keep him distracted!”

Pally nodded, his bardic energy still pulsing in the air. “I’ll sing a song of courage!” He began to strum his lute, the notes weaving a melody that resonated with determination. “We are the light that pierces the dark!” His voice rang out, a beacon of hope in the midst of chaos.

As Pally played, I charged toward Matthew, my club raised high. “You’re not getting away this time!”

But Matthew was relentless, shadows swirling to block my path. “You think you can defeat me, child of darkness?” he sneered, raising his hand to unleash a torrent of energy.

Just then, Rayguest twisted through the air, landing a powerful kick that knocked Matthew off balance. “Focus on me!” he shouted, drawing Matthew’s attention away from me, a spark of mischief and tenacity shining in his youthful eyes.

Spellbook moved in as well, weaving another spell. “We can do this! Together!” He pointed his staff at the swirling darkness, sending a surge of magical energy that shattered some of the shadows, leaving Matthew exposed.

“Now’s the time, Blunderbuss!” I called, knowing our gunslinger friend was ready to take his shot.

“On it!” Blunderbuss replied, steadying his blunderbuss, a look of fierce determination on his face. He aimed carefully, breath held as he pulled the trigger, the loud boom echoing through the forest.

The shot rang true, slamming into Matthew’s chest, the force of it sending him staggering backward. The darkness flickered as the blast disrupted his focus. “No!” Matthew roared, fury evident in his eyes, the shadows writhing around him as if they were alive, desperate to protect their master.

Seizing the moment, Rayguest followed up with a flurry of strikes, his fists dancing like fire against the dark metal of Matthew’s armor. “You can’t win against the light!” he cried, the energy surrounding him brightening as he fought, illuminating the night like a burning star.

The clash of our powers reverberated through the clearing as I swung my club with renewed vigor, joining Rayguest in the assault. “Together!” I shouted, and Raye dove in beside me, her claws ready to shred the shadows, a fierce light in her eyes that mirrored the spirit of her past life.

With each blow we landed, Matthew’s armor cracked further, and his dark magic began to falter. “You think you can defeat me?” he shrieked, but his confidence was waning. The shadows that once protected him now danced erratically, unsure of their master’s fate, flickering like dying embers in the wind.

“Keep going!” Pally encouraged, his voice ringing like a bell of hope. “We’re almost there!”

“Don’t let up!” Spellbook added, throwing a burst of arcane energy that illuminated the battlefield, dispelling some of the darkness that clung to Matthew. His magic surged like a tidal wave, breaking through the shadowy defenses.

With one final push, Rayguest and I unleashed a coordinated strike, aiming directly for the weak point in Matthew’s armor. My club crashed against his chest, and at the same moment, Rayguest delivered a powerful kick, shattering the last vestiges of his dark power.

A blinding light erupted as the shadows dissolved, and Matthew screamed in agony, the dark energy dissipating around him. “No! This can’t be!” he cried, the arrogance draining from his voice, his form breaking apart like mist before the dawn.

“Goodbye, Matthew,” I whispered, watching as he vanished into the ether, shadows melting away until he was no more, a husk of what he once was.

The silence that followed was profound. We stood panting, the forest illuminated by the remnants of our battle, shards of dark armor and broken shadows scattered like fallen leaves. Rayguest stepped back, a triumphant grin on his face, though I could see the exhaustion etched into his youthful features.

Raye took a step forward, the realization of her younger self dawning on her. “You really came back,” she said softly, awe coloring her tone, as if she were gazing at a lost piece of herself.

Rayguest nodded, his expression a mix of pride and resolve. “I had to. You needed my strength to push back the darkness.” He glanced back at the mirror, now just a frame of glass reflecting the moonlight. “But I can’t stay. This moment is fleeting, and I have to return.”

“Don’t go!” Raye pleaded, stepping forward, desperation lacing her voice.

“It’s time for me to leave,” Rayguest said gently, his voice imbued with warmth. “You’ve become something greater than I ever was. Trust in that.”

With a final, lingering look, he stepped back toward the mirror, the shards around him glimmering like stars scattered across the night sky.

“Remember me,” he said, his voice fading as he disappeared into the glass, leaving only the echo of his strength behind, a reminder of the warrior he had been.

We stood in silence, the weight of his presence still lingering in the air, a mix of gratitude and sorrow settling in our hearts.

Pally broke the stillness, his voice trembling. “Did we really just win?”

“Looks like it,” I replied, though I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much bigger. “But it doesn’t feel over. Not yet.”

The snow crunched underfoot as we took stock of our surroundings, but the weight of uncertainty loomed, a heavy shroud that clung to us. Shadows may have receded, but they were always lurking just out of sight, waiting for another chance to strike.

And I knew, deep down, that our battle was far from over.

Picture this: a bright, sunny day—absolutely awful for the folks who raised me. My kin prefer the kind of weather where the sky’s as dark as their sense of humor and the rain never stops. But let’s rewind a bit, back to my parents. Well, “parents” is a strong word. See, my mom, a full-blown demon-spawn Pitborn, struck some sort of… pact with an elf. Apparently, the guy couldn’t catch a date to save his life, so he made a deal to get laid. Classy, right?
Anyway, mom shows up to deliver me, but—surprise, surprise—elf dad ghosted. Real hero material. So what’s a demon to do? Hand me off to the skinwalkers, of course. They’re tight with her, you know, so no worries. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Did your mom just abandon you?” Nah, nothing like that. She had a busy schedule—demonic summoning and all that jazz—but she visited on weekends. Real work-life balance goals.
