Skye had returned to the galley later that morning, sitting alone by herself, and eating a bunch of snacks while writing down in her journal all the details she’s obtained about the crew members she’s met so far. She looked up at the clock. ‘8:00am’ it read..it seemed none of the other members were up right now, besides her and Usui.
Or so, she thought, as a blue and yellow coated angel dragon came into the galley and spotted her.
“Hey! Careful you don’t eat too much, we’re gonna have breakfast with the entire crew soon!”
He’d say to her, with a lighthearted chuckle.
Skye peeked up at him.
“O-Oh, uh, sorry! I wasn’t aware.”
“S’all good.”
He’d say in reply.
“I’m Jay, co-captain of the airship. Nice to meet ya, Skye.”
He sits down next to her.
“I assume Carter gave you the tour of the ship already? So, what do you think? The crew here is a little...diverse, but they're all kindhearted and loyal. I don’t think I’ve met another dragon your age, but I’m sure you’ll get along with everyone nicely.”
It was true. Skye was indeed the youngest of the crew members, having just turned 18, while the rest of the crew were very well into their 20s.
“Well..let’s hope so. Everyone seems pretty nice, so far..”
She would reply, sheepishly chuckling out of pure nervousness. It was still taking her some time to get settled and become comfortable.
Jay gently patted her on the shoulder.
“Take your time though, of course! We’re all pretty different and have contrasting dreams and goals, but at the end of the day, we bond over our love for adventure, exploration, and each other's company. And, speaking of which, I have someone I would love for you to meet.”
Skye took his hand, and he led her from the galley over to his private office.
“Alright. So! This is my office, otherwise known as the Captain’s quarters, like a normal sea-faring ship. You’re going to meet the two most precious people in my universe.”
Jay says, chuckling.
“I know you’ll get along great.”
As he opens the door, Skye would find a beige colored angel dragon, with bright blue and green wings, sitting by a baby crib that was positioned near the window. She waves to her, looking a little tired, but smiling nonetheless.
“Apricot! This is Skye, she’s our new crew member. Make her feel comfortable, okay?”
Apricot would nod her head and smile at him, as he leaves temporarily to go check on Carter. She gestured to Skye to come closer, pointing to the chair in front of her.
“No need to be shy. Come sit!”
Skye took her invitation, shyly sitting in the chair. As she sat down, she’d see tiny hands poking out at her from the cradle. Apricot heard her soft squeal of joy as she looked in.
“Is this your baby?? He’s so adorable!”
“Indeed. His name is Damian. He actually just turned a year old not too long ago. You can pick him up if you’d like.”
Apricot replies.
Skye nods her head and picks up the angel dragon baby, who had a lot of resemblance to both Jay and Apricot in his features. She softly giggled as Damian felt around her face while she held him.
“So... I heard you were running away from quite the... unfortunate situation, hm?”
Apricot says, looking at her with a sympathetic smile.
“Yeah…although..part of me feels like I made the wrong decision in running away…even though it’s what I needed to do.”
Apricot shook her head and placed her hand on her shoulder.
“You did the right thing, Skye. Nobody, absolutely NO ONE deserves to live under such an oppressive and abusive environment, especially not a child. Sometimes, the only way is to run away, and seek a better and brighter future elsewhere.”
“I..suppose so, yeah..I left my environment as soon as I turned 18, which wasn’t too long ago either, but...”
“Hey..Be proud that you took this step. You're not alone anymore, and this crew will treat you like family. I know that for sure!”
Skye gave her a gesture in response, putting Damian back in his crib and needing a moment to take a deep breath to calm herself down from her overthinking.
“You’re right..”
Apricot smiled sympathetically. She gently put an arm around her, in a motherly fashion.
“You did the right thing and there's no doubt in my mind that you'll be okay here. It might take some time to settle in, and that's okay. Remember, you can always come to me or Jay to talk or if you need anything.”
“True.. Jay seems to care a lot, even though we just met..is he normally like this?”
Apricot chuckles.
“You should've heard the way he and Carter were babbling about you after dinner last night. Yes, he and I are the type of people who always put other people first. Sometimes to the point where we worry about others more than ourselves. That's one of the reasons why we got married. He’s quite charming in that aspect~”
She smiles.
“But don't fret, Jay may be caring and concerned about you, but I assure you he won't be annoying you. Just let him know if there's anything you need!”
“Heh..I’d be more concerned about annoying him, if anything…”
Skye replies in a worried tone.
Apricot softly laughs, warm-heartedly.
“Trust me, you can't annoy someone like him. But I appreciate the thought. I'd say the only thing that you might wanna worry about is not being annoying to Nova. That one can be quite feisty. But I'm sure you'll do just fine, dear. Don't fret and try to integrate yourself in. You'll be part of the family in no time, I promise.”
Skye leaned in to hug Apricot, being mindful to wipe a tear or two from her face.
“Thank you so much..”
Apricot softly smiled and returned the hug, gently scratching behind her ears, growing quite fond of her already.
“And thank you for being so brave and trusting us.”
As a means to escape from her past, a young dragon named Skye stows away on the only place she knows people won't find her: An airship called The Pelican, owned by a famous team of adventurers called the Horizon Flyers. Fortunately, Tommy, the steward of the airship, ends up finding her hiding away in the the storage compartment of the airship. She braces for the worst, only to be caught off by his kind attitude, and provides her a place to stay instead of hiding away from everyone.
Over time, Skye befriends the rest of the crew, eventually allowing herself to bond with them over their mutual love for adventure, exploration, and each other's company. She now seeks a better and brighter future for herself, far away from the place she once used to call home.
Short story I wanted to write. Will only be 10 chapters long.
