Once they made their way to the office, she felt anxiety begin to build. Was this the right choice to do this? What is going to happen to her once she lets him know? She gulped and prepared herself to talk, but Lucky intervened. “Are you ready to hear this, Caldrith? “Of course. I can handle anything you have to say.” “Promise Alice and I that you’ll protect her from everything that could happen to her?” “I promise.” “Alice is the only one that can save this world. She is the only one who can stop those stupid stones from regenerating.” “Are you serious?” Cal said incredulously.
“Yes, why don’t you bring one of those red stones to us now. You’ll see for yourself.” His hands began to tremble. He must have been greatly unsure of what this situation would bring. “He went in a jar hidden in his desk and brought it out. “I’ve been working on spells to cast the seal. It only lasts a few hours before I have to recast it. It’s exhausting to do this day in and day out.”
He handed her the crystal and as soon as the tips of her fingers touched it the crystal disappeared. The red mist flowed around her and absorbed into her body. “How?” He almost fell over. “Lucky said I’m the chosen one. I’m the only one that can defeat him.” Once he calmed himself, he turned to look at Lucky. “Of course, you knew about all this. I do understand your reasoning. You just wanted to protect Alice.” “You’re not going to experiment on me, are you?” “NO! I mean no, I would never do that.” She breathed a sigh of relief. She didn’t realize how stressed she was until she relaxed her shoulders. They ached from the tightened muscles from fear. At least he wouldn’t experiment on her. Her biggest fear was all in the past now. What would the next step be?
“I’ll bring you all of the crystals we have here and you can destroy them. I’ll have to keep this a secret from the public. It could cause a mountain of chaos.” “Thank you, Cal.” She truly was grateful that he would protect her. “How about you wait outside? I need some time to figure this out.” They started to head out, but were stopped. “Lucky you stay here. We need to talk about how to hide this from the general public. She wondered what they could figure out together, but she decided to not push her luck. “I’m fine. Go on.” “I’ll be waiting for you.”
Caldrith and Lucky's conversation
He closed the door after Alice exited. He walked over nonchalantly to the burgundy leather chair behind his desk. “Now, I feel you know more than you’re letting on.” Lucky’s eyes narrowed in on Caldrith’s forehead. “I can’t stand to look at your eyes. They seem conniving.” Hmph. “I just want to know what we are up against. You seem to know.” “Even if I did know, you wouldn’t believe me. You almost passed out when I told you that she’s the chosen one.” “Try me.” “It’s an evil god. One that wants to destroy this world because of his hatred for lower beings.” Cal took a deep breath. A god. How were they supposed to fight against a god? This seemed laughable a few moments ago, instead it was an intense conversation. “How are we supposed to win?” “You aren’t supposed to win. Only Alice can destroy him. So, it would be best to train her to become powerful.” Alice had to be the one. Who was Alice really? He couldn’t bring himself to ask any more questions. This was enough of a revelation for today.
“Okay, okay.” He said mostly to himself. This startled him more than he wanted to admit. “Well, we’ll have to train her more. We should also enroll her in the academy. She could use a stricter learning environment. Besides, it would be good for her to make some friends.” He wasn’t wrong. Cal knew she had Lucky. The not so normal cat that would do anything for her. Even lie to him to protect her. It wasn’t a surprising thing to do for someone you love. “Alright. I agree. Just make sure she is safe there. I’m going with her.” “Not surprised. You go everywhere with her. You can’t keep her safe?” His sleek black fur ruffled up in anger. “Of course I can.” “Calm down. I was just joking with you.”
He could tell that Lucky did not appreciate the joke. Cal cleared his throat. “I’ll give you help to protect her. I don’t doubt your skills, but we need to be prepared for anything.” He wondered if their kingdom, even the world, would be saved. He never felt a terror in his bones like he did now. Maybe it was a premonition to what was coming. He felt the room start to spin. “Calm down! Alice can do this! I know it.” Lucky yelled at him. He rubbed his temples and looked at him. “Do you truly believe that?” “Yes. I do.” Maybe he should believe in Alice too. She was their only hope. He let out one deep breath. “Okay, then we will have to get her ready. But first we will have to get her the crystals. At least this will be a start.”
Alice’s viewpoint
They were taking a long time. She felt as if she wanted to pull out her hair. It was stressful, the unknown always was. What were they talking about? Why did they feel the need to discuss her without Alice being there? It was a strain to stay calm. The door creaked open, and two figures appeared. Lucky was looking at her. He had a determined expression on his face. Who knows what they’re going to do next. She braced herself. Maybe Cal went back on his word. She stepped toward them. “So, what did you all discuss?” “Your safety and how to prepare you for what’s coming next.” Cal spoke. He had somewhat of a wavering to his speech. His hands seemed to have a slight tremor. He was clearly stressed no matter how hard he tried to hide it. There was a droplet of sweat coming down his forehead. “Let’s take you to see the crystals.”
She followed him to a separate room where they were all in magical containment. “Wow. There’s so many.” She picked up and opened one of the containers and reached her hand in. Within a few seconds the crystal disappeared. Alice felt the power flow through her. It felt almost addicting. As if these crystals were somehow addictive. She doubted that Lucky had told her about the power involved in absorbing them. She was surprised that Cal didn’t notice it flowing into her. Maybe he didn’t want to ask anymore questions. He must have been stressed enough.
“Open as many as you want. Just be careful not to drop any. That wakes the core of the stone and it forms into a monster of some sort.” She carefully made sure that she didn’t drop any. Feeling each gem fade away in her hands. It was an experience like no other. “Wow, you took care of them. I’ll keep this room under lockdown until we figure out how you can come out to the public. If you can come out to regular citizens.”
She knew that public opinion could be detrimental to her goal of saving the world. Once he destroyed this kingdom he wouldn’t stop. He would continue until he destroyed every living being. Those he seemed less than him. That made her blood boil. Who was he to decide the lives of the world. Innocent lives that would be destroyed. Plenty of people were dying in the battle. It was getting serious from what she heard. Alice couldn’t help but eavesdrop on a conversation between two mages walking past her as she waited.
If it was that dire, then she would need to get stronger as fast as she possibly could. There were no room for games or even mistakes. She had to absorb as many crystals as she could. These red gemstones made her powerful. She could feel the strength flow through her with every touch.
“What’s the next steps to be able to protect the kingdom and myself?” She knew she would have to stay alive to save everyone. There was no giving up in the end. “First, we’ll go back home and discuss it. For now, let’s relax and enjoy a light snack.” She wasn’t sure if any of us could keep food down.
She finally got back to her home. She didn’t feel the same as when she did before she told Cal everything. It was different from when Lucky told her, because he had already known. It was an entirely different story to drop a bomb on someone who was just trying to give her a good day.
