After Selena dove through the portal, she gracefully landed on her feet. She tilted her head to the side when she saw small buildings up ahead resting near a forest. That must be the town mentioned in the report; she briefly thought as she moved closer.
Selena glanced up at the trees she passed by, seeing tiny birds hopping across branches and letting out soft chirps, causing a smile to grace her lips.
She abruptly stopped in her tracks and shook her head. Don't get distracted, Selena. We're supposed to be finding Cedric right now. Where could he be? she thought, walking into the quiet town where she didn't see a single person walking around in sight.
Crash!
Selena let out a small, terrified scream when a bunch of wooden boxes flew through the air behind her, crashing down to the ground. What the hell? She thought with furrowed brows as she glanced over her shoulder. Her heart rate accelerated when a black bubbling liquid shot out of one of the boxes, startling her.
Selena quickly snatched her key out of her pocket. A bright light surrounded it, transforming it into a scythe. She grimaced as the liquid got bigger, taking the form of a fox with its ribs showing through its fur.
"Slash," Selena whispered the spell as she swung around her scythe, careful not to drop it. Three air slashes charged toward the fox's direction, but it easily dodged her attacks swiftly. Fine, if that won't work, then how about this then, she thought, extending her hand forward.
A blast of fire crawled out of Selena's palm and charged toward her opportunity. Despite the creature's attempts to dodge the attack, it ended up being swallowed up by the flames.
Rustle!
Selena sharply turned her right to the right when the loud leaves being moved roughly around filled her eardrums. A gasp left her lips when something flew toward her in a blur, causing it to collide with her in a mess of limbs.
"Ow," Selena whined, slowly opening her eyes before they widened when she saw Cedric lying beneath her. A bright blush dusted her cheeks when she realized how close she was to him.
"Oh, what a relief. I was getting worried I was going to have to face that opponent all by myself. Also, judging by that blush, I'm guessing you're happy to see me too," Cedric declared with a warm smile, causing Selena to quickly get off of him.
"Happy to see you? I think that's asking me for a bit too much," Selena grumbled, dusting off her clothes. She glanced over her shoulder when she heard him sit up. "So, what type of opponents are we facing? All I saw was a bunch of liquid turn into a monstrous fox," she asked.
Cedric craned his head back to look up at her. "There are a bunch of monsters here littering the forest nearby. Our job is to get rid of them," he explained as he rose back to his feet.
"Looks like we have company," Selena claimed, pointing in the direction where four fox creatures dove out from the forest.
"Just keep your guard up because they are fast," Cedric mentioned, swirling his key around to transform it into a gun. He took aim and pulled the trigger. The bullet whizzed through the air toward one of the foxes.
The fox narrowed its eyes on the bullet as if predicting where it would hit and ducked down to avoid it. The fox quickly ran, using its back legs to propel it forward.
Selena looked over her shoulder when she heard footsteps coming up from where they were, only for her eyes to widen in surprise when twenty fox enemies slithered out of the ground. "Just how many of those things are there?" she asked before rolling forward. She swiftly swung her weapon around, easily slicing through one of the foxes, turning it into a black goo.
Cedric threw his body back into a series of cartwheels and then used his right leg to propel himself into the air. "If I'm being honest, there were a lot more of them before you got here," he mentioned, aiming his gun toward sending multiple bullets toward the targets below.
The bullets danced through the air and managed to sink into a couple of them, turning them into nothing more than harmless piles of goo. Cedric twisted his body around and gracefully landed on his feet.
"Well, I can't say I'm complaining since this mission is a lot better than the last one," Selena shouted before extending her hand out. "Freeze," she stated, causing balls of ice to merge together to form icicles that soared forward, piercing through a couple of the foxes. She carefully dove backward, avoiding their claws.
Rumble! Rumble! Rumble!
Selena's blood ran cold when the floor beneath her feet violently shook, almost like an earthquake was occurring. She quickly turned her head when she saw trees being knocked over into the distance. "What the hell is that!" she asked in a panic.
Cedric sprinted back toward her, looking anxious at the scene before them. "That can't be good. I just know it," he stated.
The air was ripped out of her lungs. Her mouth hung open in disbelief as she watched on when a massive head of a fox burst out of the forest; flames dripped out of its eyes. Her eyes traveled downward to see parts of its fur were on fire.
Howl!
Cedric winced and covered up his ears when the deafening roar ripped through the air. "Why couldn't they have given us an easy mission? Now, I just feel like they're messing with us," he admitted, reaching out toward it. "Rain blast!" he roared, sending a blast of cold water at it.
The fox's head flew backward slightly from the impact. It brought its head back forward, the fire in its eyes burning brighter with irritation. It opened up its mouth wide and shot a fire blast at them.
Panic welled up in Cedric as the temperature increased when the fireball headed directly toward them. "That's not good," he admitted before lunging forward. He transformed his weapon into a staff and swung upward, causing a strong gust of wind to blow the flames upward, creating a massive wave of pure fire.
Selena ground her teeth when she saw the flames get bigger. "Why would you use a wind spell on it!" she scolded him, feeling sweat drip down the side of her face as the temperature gradually continued to increase. "Rain!" she shouted, causing gray clouds to decorate the sky, sending an onslaught of water to the ground.
The fox howled out in pain when the water struck it. Tiny puffs of smoke slithered out from the flames where the water managed to touch. The fox angrily stomped on the ground, forcing the ground to open up.
A surprised gasp left Selena's throat when she felt her body weight shift forward, giving her a view of the pit below that the fox managed to create.
Cedric quickly reached out, grabbed onto her arm, and yanked her back. "That was almost too close," he stated while keeping his eyes on it.
Selena breathed in a shaky breath since she thought she was going to fall into that pit. "Thanks for not letting me fall in," she stated when her breathing finally calmed down.
"Of course, that's what partners are for," Cedric claimed with a warm smile on his lips.
If nothing fire-related works, then I guess we'll just have to use nothing but water-based spells on it, she thought for a brief moment. Selena's eyes widened in bewilderment when small balls of fire broke off from the fox's body and flew over toward them.
Cedric swiftly twisted his body around Selena's, slicing into one of the fireballs, causing it to extinguish. "Looks like we got a problem!" he shouted when more fireballs headed their way.
Selena planted her feet firmly as she took in a deep breath. "Then this should work, hopefully. Wave!" she roared. Water swirled around them and moved outward, swallowing up the fire spheres.
Roar!
The fox growled in anger when its attack failed. It moved closer, only to stumble backward, when a blue cobra sank its fangs into its snout.
"Think you can use another rain spell to cover me?" Cedric asked as he gripped onto the handle of his weapon before charging forward.
"You can count on me, rain!" Selena shouted, putting all her focus on casting the spell.
Water poured down from the gray clouds above, weakening the fox's flames.
Cedric charged forward, using the boxes on the ground to give him a lift. "You're finished," he stated, slamming the blade of his staff into its snout, causing it to howl out in pain and swing him around. He carefully dislodged his weapon, allowing himself to be thrown into the air. His eyes focused as he planned his next course of attack.
