She didn't even wait for my answer to start to head for the exit. I stood up slowly, afraid that my legs might fail me after lying down for so long.
—M-Miss Amayda! You cannot take the test subject with you, we are not finished with his evaluation yet.
—Professor.—When she turned around, her gaze was cold and penetrating, and I noticed at first glance how the man trembled at the tone of her voice.—Your job is to introduce souls into the test subjects and make sure they are stable. After assimilation, the subjects are no longer your job. And since Aisha already has a soul, your service is not necessary.
— I-I...
—Also…—She interrupted him, raising her voice imposingly—I doubt that you can find out what kind of soul Aisha has, if so, you would have done so already, you have had more than enough time. You are not as intelligent as you think you are, professor.
The man lowered his head in shame.
Amayda turned around knowing that she had won. Before the man could react again, I hurried after her. I was walking through the door when I staggered a little and collided with the door frame. Amayda waited for me halfway down the hall, seeing how I had collided and when I approached she extended something.
—I think you'll need these.
I took the blurry glasses and looked at them carefully. Before I could barely watch the details of objects but since they've been experimenting on me my vision has improved a little. At least enough to be able to distinguish what's in front of me and not just see a blurry spot, so I've stopped bringing my glasses to the experiments. Because of that and for fear that they might break.
Especially because it was the only thing they allowed me to keep of all the things I brought with me.
Now I can see more clearly the elegant details of the glasses that Yuriko had given me.
– I know you have another pair, but I found these among your things and here between us it is better for you to use these in this place. If you want people to respect you, you must look respectable and intimidating.
— I don't think I can look intimidating.
— So you must look respectable, leaving those childish glasses for some more elegant ones is a good start. Let's go.
I put on the glasses and followed her along the corridors. A small voice in my head demanded that I try to escape but I knew it would be useless, not only because I don't know the structure of the facility but because this woman is not like any other. If she is one of the weapons then I would be in serious trouble if I tried to run away.
— I recommend you not to think about escaping.— I was startled when I was discovered.— I'm nice most of the time, but believe me, you don't want to see me angry.
Without further ado, I cleared my mind and let myself go with the flow. We came to some large double doors made of metal, at first glance they looked heavy and the first thing I thought was that we would need more than two people to open them, however, that thought was discarded when I saw that Amayda opened them without any difficulty. Upon entering I admired the thickness of the doors and the doubt of how that thin woman could move them without flinching came to my mind, but believing that I would be intruding too much I preferred not to ask.
— Well, here is fine.
The doors closed behind us causing me to jump slightly in my place.
— Don't worry, you don't have to be alert here, it's a safe place... most of the time.
—What do you mean by that?
— We use this place as a training camp. The walls are made of a resistant material that withstands all kinds of attacks and there is high technology all over the room, that way we can monitor the skills and progress of each candidate.
—¿Candidate?—I asked.—You and your companions don't train here?
—You are observant, huh? Well done, that can be of great help to you.—She congratulated me with a satisfied smile on her face.— We, the people who are already part of the rescue team, train outdoors, in real circumstances.
In short, their training consists of going out into the streets to fight the monsters themselves.
A chill ran down my spine knowing that this was possibly my future. I don't want it, I don't want any of this, I just want to find my brother and get out of the city.
I want my normal life back. I can't fight those things face to face, not again.
For the first time I allowed myself to look around. It was a very large space, so much so that I could barely see the walls on the other side of the room, it has a couple of obstacles and other technology that I don't know what it's for. The walls seem to be made of metal but the strange iridescent effect made me question if that was the case.
— Okay, enough talk. Let's get to the action. I'll show you my ability.
She pulled out a deck of cards from one of the pockets in her clothes and laid the cards out in a fan shape in front of her face.
— My ability is the tarot cards.
–¿Tarot?
Without bothering to answer my silly question, she took one of the cards and threw it away. The instant it hit the ground, it began to shake and crack. Soon, a part of the ground began to bulge and from there a body covered by black nebula rose, with horns on its head, hooves and creepy ruby eyes.
–T-that's a…— My sentence stopped halfway due to the unfounded fear in me. The murderous aura of this monster is something incredible.
—A powerful card, the devil.-— Amayda clarified, looking proudly at her creation.
She showed me another of her cards.
— The magician, another of my most powerful cards. If I throw it, a physical being will manifest, just like my previous card did. However, there is another way I can use my cards.
She placed the card on her chest, it flooded in a golden glow before disappearing. Just when I thought nothing had happened, Amayda's eyes changed and turned completely black.
From her hand, she released a kind of rays and black smoke.
—If I place the card on myself, I gain the powers of the card. The same thing happens if I place it on another person.
I opened my eyes wide. I felt a strange mix of feelings: surprise, shock, disbelief and fear. Now I understood why she didn't need guards to guide me through the halls, she alone was more than enough to keep me at bay if I tried to escape.
I didn't know how I should react to this, a person capable of summoning monsters and using their powers, and who knows what else she can do with the rest of the cards, but, the fact of knowing that she wasn't the only one who had abilities of this style gave me a chill all over my body. It's terrifying to think that such powerful humans exist.
Amayda snapped her fingers and the magic in her hand disappeared while the summoned monster was enveloped in a black darkness then turning into a shapeless mound until it slowly faded away.
—W-What are you?- I asked without thinking.
The brunette frowned at my question.
—A soul carrier, I've told you that before. I thought you were smarter.
I instantly understood the insult but bit my tongue to avoid saying something that could anger her or get me into trouble.
—How many of you are there?
—Six.
Six, just six of them. On one hand it's a good thing, since, despite being few, there are people who can fight against these creatures. On the other hand, it's terrifying to think that there are so many powerful and terrifying people. They could be the salvation of the human race, but if they want, they can also be our downfall.
And I have a slight feeling that the line between the two things is extremely thin.
