She chose a cutesy romance book to read. The last thing on her mind was romance, but it was a good break from her current reality. She felt some relief when she opened up to the front page. She began to read the first chapter then kept on going all the way till the end. She didn’t even realize what time it was till Lucky told her it was time to go to bed. Thankfully she managed to finish it. “That book was so wonderful. It talked about fated mates, and how some people are made to be together.” “That does sound interesting.” She kept telling him all about the characters and the plot. Lucky listened intently and commented on the parts he found interesting. It was a wonderful discussion between the two of them. “I loved the ending scene where they moved in together. It was so beautiful.” She yawned. “I guess you’re tired. You should get some rest. Alice put her head to the pillow and fell into a peaceful sleep.
The first day of the academy
It was finally time to get ready to head out. She would be staying on campus and both Luke and Lucky would be coming with her. Cal wanted to make sure she was safe there. Even though Alice doubted anything bad could happen on a campus full of mages. This was going to be at least an interesting day. This time they were taking the carriage since there were so many items to take with us. From clothes and shoes to textbooks needed for her scheduled classes. Luke couldn't sit still the whole time. He kept grabbing luggage and other necessities with him to put into the back storage area. We didn't need to rush, but we did so anyways. I was arriving a day early to get ready to stay on campus. It was a warm day today and the breeze helped cool down the increasing temperature. She had a little bit of bad nerves. She wasn't sure what this school would look like, but she was excited to find out.
"Are we all packed and ready?" Cal was in and out of the mansion to make sure everything was going according to plan. It was important for this to go off without a single problem. "Almost." Luke called out. He helped load the last piece of luggage into the back. "Now, we are done." "Wonderful. Come here Alice." He embraced her. It was a snug hug filled with worry but hope for her. "Thank you so much for joining this family." He wanted to thank her; she should be thanking him. "No, thank you Cal. You brought me into this wonderful household with all these amazing people." The staff that helped her everyday had no bias against where she had come from. They treated her as if she was Caldrith's own daughter. "Thank you so much dear." The older maid came up and gave her a slight pinch on the cheek. "You're going to grow up to be a fine woman in the future." Alice was brought to tears. "Don't cry sweetie. You're going to do great." "I know. I just will miss you all. And she really would. They were such a help when she first moved to the mansion. They made it her home. They waved goodbye to her, and she headed on her way.
Caldrith's viewpoint
Little did Alice know how truly dire the situation was on the front. They were running out of soldiers to fight. They were going to have to call upon the average person to take up arms against these monstrosities. There was no going back from what needed to be done. He had put her in his will if he did not come back from the frontlines. There were many mages being sent out to collect the red gemstones that scattered across the battlefields. They never dying monsters that kept rising from their crystalized graves. There was no hope, at least not until Alice came. Without her this kingdom would truly fall, just like the others. He wouldn't let that happen. He had not told her where he was off to. Caldrith was afraid that she would want him to stay. There was really no choice in the matter, and he didn't want to upset her before going to the academy. He knew better than to do that. He would have to step down from his position anyways one day. Alice would eventually take over. "Are you ready sir?" The admiral for the war asked him. "Yes, ready as I'll ever be." He had forbidden Luke from telling Alice about where he was going. All he had to do was keep his mouth shut. Hopefully he could do that.
Alice's viewpoint
The landscape changed as they rode through the capital of the city all the way over to the academy. The academy wasn't located centrally, but to the far side of the kingdom. She wasn't ready to see the beauty of the entry way yet. They spoke of it being so breathtaking that you couldn't believe your eyes. She hoped it would have the same impact on her. She finally arrived at the gates and truly understood what they meant. There were lush green shrubs surrounding the entrance and a gold-plated insignia on top of the black iron arches that were part of the gates to the school. They sky above was blue and hardly any clouds were scattered in the sky. It was picturesque. "We're here miss. Let's get you to your room." She made her way out of the carriage with the help from Luke. Not that she really needed it. She appreciated it anyways.
Lucky jumped out onto the ground from the carriage's top step. Cats were very agile beings. She would never forget how high he jumped sometimes and still seemed to never be hurt or injured. He had been doing more dangerous jumps lately and it scared her. He eventually slowed down on doing that. There was no need to be doing acrobats in the mansion.
Luke helped the driver carry the luggage up the stairs to her dormitory room. It was much more extravagant that she thought it would be. "Is there someone staying in this room with you?" "Yes. There are two beds because I wanted a roommate." She didn't want to be pretentious and act like she couldn't share a room. Heck, she shared a room with much more people than just one person. This wouldn't be that bad. Maybe her roommate would be a great addition to the small friend group she had already built. She felt that Luke and Lucky were her greatest friends. They hopefully thought of her in that way too.
She stepped into the room to get a better look around the place. The girl I would be staying with hadn't seemed to have arrived yet. We were early, so she probably would be here tomorrow. That would be great. Smiling she sat down on the bed, and it was just as comfy as the one at home. She was amazed.
"Are you sure you are okay with sharing a room with someone else?" The carriage driver asked. "Of course. It would be great to make a new friend or a few new ones." She hoped to meet a lot of wonderful people here. There were bound to be other beginning mages here that would want to get to know her. "I am so excited. Aren't you too Lucky? You might get to meet other magical beings here you can talk to." He looked at her confused. "All I need to talk to is you." That was so sweet of Lucky to say. Alice thought he said that to make her feel good. But he truly felt that way. She was the most important person in his life. "I'll get going. I don't want to scare off your future roommate." Luke said then headed out. Alice went to the closet and started to put clothes away. "Oh my, they packed me way too many dresses." Unfortunately, there wasn't a set uniform here. You could wear one, but it wasn't a mandatory rule. She decided she would pick out her dress before tomorrow's opening ceremony. She put each one on and clothing rack and started to look through them. "What do you think of this Lucky?" She pulled out a lemon-colored dress with a large bow on the side. "That looks a little...not like you." He was right. She didn't really like this dress but felt it should be worn one time at least. "Let's keep looking." Her eyes finally landed on a light blue dress with a bow in the back. It looked lovely. She would wear that one. "Now it's time to pick out the shoes." She settled on some brown flats. Alice wanted to be comfortable for the opening ceremony. Who knew what they would do that day.
"That looks like a nice outfit." She turned around and saw her roommate.
