Book 1: Chapter 14

Alice's viewpoint
The girl standing by the doorway had short auburn hair and crystal clear blue eyes. She was what one called "beautiful." "What's your name?" She asked Alice. "It's Alice. What's yours?" "Ruby." "That's such a cute name." Alice really did like her name. "Your name is really nice as well." She did like her name, but not as much as the name "Ruby." She was ecstatic that she was going to her roommate. "Who's this little one?" She said pointing to Lucky. "My name is Lucky." She looked a little taken aback. "You have a magical creature too?" "You have one as well?" A little fox came striding in. It had one tail. She heard that the more tails they had the more powerful they were. It was an interesting fact she found out by reading the magical beasts encyclopedia. "Hi, what's your name?" "Is it any of your business?" The fox said rudely. Lucky hissed at her. "Be nice to her, Yuki." "It's okay." "Not it isn't. You can't let this little fox be rude to you. You deserve to be treated right." "What's that Lucky? That's a stupid name if I ever heard one." Lucky was ready to strike but calmed down once he saw the worry in Alice's face. "Sorry, she's like that around strangers." "I understand, she's just trying to protect you." "Protect? I guess." "At least she gets it!" Yuki yelled. Looking at Alice she spoke "You're not half bad, but I can't say the same about your cat."

Lucky just glared at the fox but said nothing more. She guesses he knew not to start a fight on the first day here. I know he was doing this for Alice's sake. Thankfully she helped him calm down. "Are you going to the opening ceremony?" Ruby asked. "Of course. Why wouldn't I go?" "I was just curious. If you're going, I guess I will go to." She wondered why Ruby was so reluctant to go to the opening ceremony. "What are you going to wear?" "I'm not sure. Most of my clothes have not arrived yet." "You could borrow one of my dresses if you want to." Alice pulled out a long shimmering green dress. She felt it matched Ruby's style. "Wow. Are you sure?" "Yeah, it's fine." Her eyes were filled with joy. "Thanks so much." "You're welcome." They chatted on for hours till it was time for dinner. It was a great idea that Cal said to bring some snacks for us to eat. They really filled us up for lunch.

Ruby's viewpoint

When she got into the room, she was expecting someone snobby who didn't want to be in here with her. It was the exact opposite. Ruby found the best roommate she could ever have. Alice was sweet and humble. She would get this dress back once she was done wearing it tomorrow. She could easily tell it was made with expensive and luxuriously crafted fabric. Alice seemed to have money, unlike her. Ruby had gotten here on merit. While she was a highly skilled mage, she didn't have an affluent background. That was rare to have an affinity to magic and not be part of a regal family. But when she got into the room with Alice, she couldn't help but smile and giggle with her. She had an infectious bubbly personality. Ruby had keen intuition since she was a child. She could tell Alice was stressed but tried her best to be happy anyway. She was someone that Ruby was inspired to be like. She even understood why Yuki was this way. I doubt she knew my circumstances. She believed me when I told her my clothes were coming late. That was a lie she would eventually figure out.

She wouldn't be surprised if she hated Ruby later for lying, but this time was well worth a little fib. Ruby always had a hard time making friends at this school. They all seemed to have their nose stuck up to the sky. The only friend she had here graduated, and they haven't talked since. It was sad how people strayed apart once they left a certain point int their life. Or maybe they weren't as close as she had wanted to believe. She hoped they were close, but in the end, they never spoke after her new job started. They finally made their way to the cafeteria. Thankfully most of the students waited till tomorrow to come, so the place was almost empty. Well, except for the dining staff. "Is the food good here?" Alice asked. "Yeah." She wasn't sure what to say. What if she didn't think it was good? What if she thought that Ruby was a complete idiot. They each grabbed a plate. Alice went with what she got. Which was mashed potatoes and roasted chicken legs. It looked like the most appetizing meal she had for a long time. When she was off school, she never got meals like this.

"This looks good." Alice said before digging in. She was less refined as she first appeared. She almost inhaled the food. The shock was clear on Ruby's face. "Sorry, I eat fast sometimes." She saw. "I understand, I do that too sometimes." Ruby always wanted to fit in, so she ate slow and dainty. It never really got her anywhere. So instead, she began to dig in like Alice. Like she always wanted to. "This is delicious." "I know. I always love getting the food here in the cafeteria." That never changed about Ruby. She loved to enjoy good food when she could. It was a part of who she was. She couldn't change that about herself.

They decided to go back to their room and relax after dinner. They were stuffed to the max and were feeling sleepy. "I think we should rest up for tomorrow. What do you think?" "Sounds like a great idea." Alice told her and plopped herself on top of the bed. She slowly began to drift off into sleep. Alice was the best roommate she could ever ask for.

Alice's viewpoint (Opening ceremony day)

It was finally time to get ready and head out to the celebration. Luckily it was in the late afternoon so they could sleep in a little bit. Alice stretched her body and looked over to see if Ruby was awake. She turned out to be wide awake and pacing back and forth. Alice wondered what she was acting so nervous for. She didn't want to pry, but maybe there was some opening test that they needed to take. She surely hoped not, she needed a break. "Are you okay?" Alice finally asked. She jumped "Oh, you scared me. I didn't realize you were awake." "Oh, I'm sorry." "It's fine." "How long do we have before it starts?" "Oh about a few hours." She said then sat down on the bed hard. She realized going to the opening ceremony seemed to be bothering her. Maybe it was for the best she didn't go. As if she could sense her thoughts she said "I'm going no matter what. Don't worry." She had a determined expression on her face. She looked confident in herself. This might be okay. Ruby put on the green dress, and it looked stunning on her. "Does this look nice?" "It looks great. I mean it." She smiled back gently.

Alice felt like Ruby didn't see her beauty. She kept scrutinizing herself in the mirror. "You look amazing." Ruby looked back. "Yes, I mean it." "Thanks." "There's no need to thank me. I am only stating the facts." She was glad she could cheer her up even if only for a little bit. "You look great." Yuki and Lucky said in unison. Yuki glared back at Lucky. Lucky just ignored her glare. He seemed indifferent to Yuki. They didn't start off on the right foot. Hopefully they would start to get along eventually. "Let's see you in your dress." Alice got changed into her dress but had trouble with the ribbon in the back. "I'll help you." "Oh, thanks." Ruby quickly fixed the knot, and it was back to where it should be. At that moment she wondered how Luke was doing. She hoped he was okay. Alice wished they wouldn't have put him in the servant quarters. She wanted him closer to her. Luke wasn't lonely down there. I'm sure he made friends with the others. "Almost ready to go?" She put on her brown flats and Ruby wore heels. She looked much taller than me with heels on. She was already taller than her to begin with. "Let's go." "Lead the way." They left the room and headed down to where the ceremony would be held.

It was a bit of a distance from where the dorms were. She saw other students in similar types of apparel. Alice was glad she had brought her nicest of dresses with her. To be honest, all of her dresses were nice.
