Rebirth in the Apocalypse: Shadow of the Dark Night

The Underground Palace - II

The Underground Palace - II

Oct 25, 2024

A few people hastily ate something, following the village rules, Li Shun searched the muscular woman first. He stripped her completely, though everyone knew this woman must have been peculiar, it still slightly satisfied the villagers' curiosity. The woman was covered in thick hair all over her body, even her chest hair was black and dense. If it weren't for her unusually large breasts and the absence of male parts, it would have been hard to tell if she was a woman.

The woman was indeed wearing strange clothing, very sturdy but looking quite tattered. However, it was this piece of clothing that only allowed a small portion of the musket's iron sand to penetrate, leaving just over a dozen wounds on her back from the hundred or so grains of sand. From the front, Li Shun's dagger had also passed through a tear in the clothing and stabbed into her heart; otherwise, he might not have been able to kill her with one stab.

As for the other items she carried, besides the medicine being used by Wang Zheng and Old Luo to bandage their wounds, most were not understood how to use, so Li Shun gathered them up to deal with once they returned to the village.

"This woman is quite a treasure herself, hehe, this medicine is much more effective than our village herbs; it feels cool right away when applied," Wang Zheng chuckled.

Old Luo nodded and instructed the villagers a few more times before letting the three uninjured men go to open the coffin. The three men gathered around the coffin, estimating the direction of the lid, and without much effort, they opened the coffin lid.

Although everyone was mentally prepared, no one expected such a commotion when the coffin lid opened! The entire hall, including the coffin, seemed to come alive, emitting a soft white light!

Old Luo felt a sudden unease, a story from his youth flashed through his mind: someone had also made a building light up in an ancient ruin and then mysteriously died inside!

"Hurry up and retreat!" Old Luo was always cautious, which was why he had lived to such an old age. Everyone scrambled to run out of the hall and down to the first level. Indeed, just as they hadn't gone far, Wang Zheng, who was lagging slightly behind, suddenly felt numbness and heat in his legs. Looking down, he saw a bloody hole had appeared on his leg! Terrified, he screamed in agony! Li Shun remained relatively calm, ordering the rest to carry Old Luo away quickly while he turned back to carry Wang Zheng and ran for the exit with all his might!

Fortunately, the villagers had marked their way in, and Li Shun did not encounter the same inexplicable injury as Wang Zheng, allowing them to escape safely.

Just as the villagers fled the hall in panic, the muscular woman, thought to be dead and stripped bare, opened her eyes at that moment!

'Thank the omnipotent God, if it weren't for the bishop's secret method to alter my body, I would have been done for long ago,' the woman thought as she struggled to crawl to the side of the coffin and stood up using it for support. 'Luckily, the coffin lid is already open; my luck isn't too bad. First, I'll pull the body out; these bumpkins, the liquid in the coffin is the best healing potion. Even after so many years, whether it's still effective is uncertain, but I have to take a chance!'

The woman felt dizzy, knowing she was seriously injured and had lost a lot of blood. Without hesitation, she took out a small glass vial from her hair and injected its contents into her arm, which seemed to provide temporary relief.

Xiu Fen gritted her teeth and pulled the body out of the coffin. It looked like a man, about 180 cm tall, possibly due to the coffin fluid, the body was intact, still connected to several odd tubes. The body was not fat but unexpectedly heavy, probably weighing two hundred kilograms or more.

Xiu Fen didn't care about the peculiarities of the body anymore; she flipped herself into the coffin. It was a bit narrow for her, but the strong woman couldn't afford to be picky. The wounds seemed to itch slightly, a sign of healing, and Xiu Fen felt a surge of joy.

'It seems the coffin fluid is still effective,' Xiu Fen thought, but her limbs gradually grew heavy. She knew the effects of the medicine she had used were wearing off, 'Damn, I never thought these bumpkins would be so cunning and cause me such a loss. When I wake up, I'll lead the believers to level your village! Hmph!'

Xiu Fen wasn't sure if she would survive, but she also knew that willpower was key to her awakening, so she kept using hatred to remind herself or, rather, to suggest to herself that she must wake up!

Thus, the strong woman named Xiu Fen slowly sank into darkness, her thoughts filled with continuous curses.

Strangely enough, when Old Luo and the villagers reached the exit, the glow from the entire structure was gradually fading. They crawled out of the tunnel entrance and told the waiting villagers outside about what had happened inside. After some discussion among the elders, Old Luo suggested simply leaving the place and evacuating, but the elders of the Wang and Li families opposed this idea.

"A dead person shouldn't die in vain!"

"Never mind, the person is dead already. Li Shun took out the dry rations, and everyone ate what they could manage to get some strength back. Then we'll search that woman first, and open the coffin afterward; perhaps there's something good waiting for us!" Old Luo chuckled and reminded the others, "Be prepared when you open it; who knows what might be inside."

"Exactly, and we've lived here for decades; it's really hard to leave."

"It's almost winter, and with families to take care of, where can we go?"

"The bugs at the village entrance are starting to retreat; it looks like that stinky woman really caused the trouble! With the bugs gone, what do we have to fear!"

It's understandable that the villagers are emotionally attached to their homeland, but Old Luo's concerns are not unfounded. Originally, he wanted to see what could be found and then split the value with the woman. But Wang Zheng acted too quickly, resulting in the death of one of their own and the woman as well. What if the woman had accomplices who came back for revenge? It would be better to leave early.

In the end, the elders decided to wait until the glow from the structure faded completely, then send a few bugs tied to poles ahead to explore, followed by sending people down. Regardless of any findings, the whole village would hide in the wilderness for a few days, and before winter set in, they would send scouts back to check. If everything was normal, the village would move back.

This time, Li Shun led the group, accompanied by three strong men. Four people walked in two rows, with the front two pushing bugs on poles to explore the path, and ropes tied around their waists held by the two behind. If anything went wrong, the latter could pull the front ones back immediately.

They proceeded cautiously, and the four managed to return to the hall unscathed.

"Li Shun, is this the place?" asked Luo San, one of Old Luo's sons, the same age as Li Shun.

"Yes, but why is it so warm and humid in here? And it's full of white mist," Li Shun replied, pushing the pole forward. Luo San mimicked him, and the two bugs reluctantly moved forward. The hall was filled with thick white mist, denser at lower levels, making it impossible to see below waist height. The only consolation was that the torches they carried were still burning.

Besides the change in temperature, the hall was permeated with a strange odor, not the usual damp cold smell, but a faint foul stench.

"This smell is weird," the men said, unable to see clearly in the thick fog, and took a few more steps towards the center, waving their hands to disperse the mist.

At this moment, Li Shun realized something was amiss! "Where is that woman? The body is gone!"

"You two, look around for the body! Luo San, I'll cover your back, see if the woman is hiding in the coffin. If she is, don't hesitate, cut off her head first!" The three newcomers, unaware of the bizarre situation, agreed and began searching.

Li Shun was somewhat afraid; he had clearly killed her, yet the woman was not dead? As he gave the orders, Luo San agreed and headed towards the coffin, while Li Shun slowly and tremblingly backed towards the exit.

Suddenly, his foot sank! Li Shun was already on edge, and the sudden sensation nearly made him scream. Ignoring Luo San, he looked down to see his foot resting on a pale hand, which, more bizarrely, twitched!
